Thus it is simpler: Buddhabrot_ { reset=2004 type=mandelcloud passes=1 center-mag=-0.300522/-4.44089e-016/0.8079007/1/-90/-1.23373533611470521e-014 params=751 float=y maxiter=751 fillcolor=0 inside=0 outside=summ sound=off } A BASIC script prints out the whole thing as a literal string, but the params and maxiter numbers are variables; a simple loop varies them from 2->751 and prints out all the PAR entries to one file, along with a BAT file which runs fractint and references the entries sequentially. XFRACTINT? I tried it a few years ago when I was investigating linux. It didn't seem to be as fast or as versatile as DOS fractint so I shelved it. I'm still waiting for 64 bit Fractint ... In the mean time, I've finally got ultrafractal to read some of my fractint pars, like for the universe sequences, but I have to hack them up a bit. Maybe I can re-render the U3 viddie in 32 bit color if I can get it right. But I don't know if current systems can be run 24/7/365; they are not as robust as older systems and tend to overheat. I can fix that, but the rendering time should be much quicker since a windows app can take advantage of the full proc capabilities and 32 bit memory addressing, but they actually render slower than fractint. Don't know why that is ... JoTz .

FractInt for Windows (beta 4) -- open for testing

Welcome to the FractInt Makeover! For those of you on the fractint list that may not have heard, I've been overhauling the FractInt source base to move it out of the 16-bit DOS world. Things have been progressing nicely and I'm now at a point where I think widespread testing would be helpful. Download and install beta 4 of FractInt for Windows: <http://tinyurl.com/26dvd7> I've just resubscribed to the fractint list so you can send bug reports to me or to the list. If you have any doubt, just send any bugs to me. A memory dump file will be produced upon a crash, but that shouldn't be happening anymore :-). This is what I would call "Phase I" of the overhaul. It is a migration of the existing DOS source base to a 32-bit Windows application. The user interface looks and acts like DOS because it is just a port of the DOS ui. A minimal amount of "Windows-ification" has been done, but you'll notice a lack of normal Windows things like a menu bar, context menu, paying attention to the mouse, dialog boxes, etc. The next phase will be to backfill these changes into the X Window System version to make all these features available to xfractint. Once that is tested, the beta will be over and a new release made. Known Issues There is no sound output support. There is no mouse support. Panning and zooming is by keyboard only. Video modes with pixel dimensions other than 4/3 aspect ratio assume non-square pixels. The images all render fine, but they appear stretched or squashed. The choice of resolutions in fractint.cfg reflect this. With debugflag=10000, error messages are reported for disk video mode when: start fractint, pick any disk video mode (e.g. 320x200), let it render, wait for completion, then go to the <v> screen, change 320 to 32, submit it. Without the debugflag settings, FractInt for Windows will most likely crash. This problem is present in the DOS fractint and not a result of the port. There are a few gaps in functionality associated with fractal types that were computed via assembly language, but these were mostly integer versions of some of the more common fractal types. Patch 6 to Fractint version 20.4

Patch 6 to Fractint version 20.4 is now available on the Fractint Developer's web sites: www.fractint.org or www.fractint.net This is unrelated to Rich's port. What's new: Added Per Image Settings to the formula parser. When initially selected from the fractal type formula screen, the symmetry and any per image settings are enforced. The per image settings will be saved to PARs and GIFs, and can be changed from the appropriate screen. The possible values for per image settings are the same as the parameters that appear in PAR files, with the exception of 'params='. Params can't be set in the per image settings section, because they get set to zero when the formula is parsed. FOTD -- June 30, 2007 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: It has come to my attention that a rumor is spreading about water in the basement of New Fractal Central. There is a bit of truth to the rumor, though the situation is not nearly as bad as it is back at Old Fractal Central. At old F.C. the basement takes on up to 2 inches of water at every heavy rain -- once or twice a month it seems. But the new F.C. basement has gotten wet only once in the 1-1/2 years we have owned it, and it took a really torrential downpour to put a 1-inch deep puddle in the back corner by the laundry. (When searching for a house, some compromises must be made. A perfectly dry basement was one of the compromises we made.) But there is no compromise in the quality of today's image, which rates a solid 8. The image is an evaporated one that lies in the parent fractal that results when 5 negative parts of Z^(-1.4142) are combined with 0.5 negative part of Z^(-8.7) and (1/C) is added. I named the image "Fractal Nursery" when I had the impression of new fractal images continually being generated in the depths of the scene. The included parameter file calculates in only 1-1/3 minutes on the P2000 machine. It would take around 6 minutes on the P200 unit. But time becomes irrelevant when the image is viewed on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> A mostly cloudy but otherwise quite pleasant day with a temperature of 77F 25C here at Fractal Central on Friday went un-appreciated by both man and cats. FOTD -- June 29, 2007 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With the work that did not get done yesterday still behind, today's discussion will be another brief one. For today's FOTD I brought out a formula I have not used in almost 10 years. The formula mixes (-z)^n and (+z)^n to create fractals that are a combination of negative Z and positive Z. In today's image n=1.198. The parent fractal is not much to look at, but it has two most unusual buds on the northeast and southeast shore lines of its main bay. Today's image shows a peculiar midget on a very straight filament extending from the northeast bud. I named today's image "Very Strange Midget", which is a statement of fact, and rated it at a 5. It's a rather slow image, taking 19 minutes on the fast P2000 machine. FOTD -- June 28, 2007 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Due to a violent thunder-storm and power outage on Wednesday here at Fractal Central, today's FOTD is late and the discussion is brief. The image is a scene in the fractal that results when various negative portions of Z^(-1.5) and Z^(-6.5) are mixed together and (1/C) is added. Though I found the image almost instantly, I still consider it worth a rating of a 6. The name "A Harmless Scene" shows that I do not expect too much from it. The calculation time of a brief 47 seconds makes rendering the image from the included parameter file a breeze. But why not avoid the wind by viewing the image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The 99F 37C heat and high humidity here at Fractal Central on Wednesday were broken in the evening by a violent thunder-storm, which knocked down trees, put out the lights and flooded the fractal basement with an inch of water. The fractal cats did not like the crackling lightning and thunder at all, and ducked under the bed for the duration. Since I enjoy wild weather, I enjoyed the storm, but I fear it will be far less fun cleaning and drying the basement. If nothing else goes wrong, the next FOTD will appear on schedule. FOTD -- June 27, 2007 (Rating 3) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Yesterday's image took us on a trip to four-dimensional hyperspace, where we saw East Valley as it has never been seen before. Today's image takes us to Seahorse Valley hyperspace for an equally odd view of things. To start, I must apologize. I realize that the image holds little artistic value, which explains the abysmal rating of a 3, but it does have a modicum of mathematical value, and it calculates fast as lightning, in a mere 10 seconds, which makes it a better value than yesterday's image. I named the image, "This is a Seahorse" -- a self-explanatory title. It is indeed a seahorse, or at least part of one, though I doubt that a biological seahorse could ever be sliced to give such a section. And there are also many small near-perfect seahorses scattered throughout the scene. Yes, the past two images do indicate that I am feeling a spate of writing about the fourth dimension coming on. To me, the fourth dimension is one of the most tantalizing mysteries, one that I never grow tired of pondering. Or more accurately, it is a scene in the area of the four-dimensional Julibrot fractal that corresponds to East Valley. The Julibrot fractal is the 4-D object that would be formed if all the Julia sets were stacked into a single pile. Curiously, the same 4-D object would be formed if all the perturbed Mandelbrot sets were stacked into a single pile, though the object would be oriented in a totally perpendicular direction. Actually, the direction of today's slice is closer to the Julia orientation than the Mandelbrot orientation. It is rotated from the Julia direction in only two of the four possible directions, one rotation of 20 degrees and one of 60 degrees. The East Valley area of the Mandelbrot set is known as Elephant Valley for a good reason. It is filled with elephants -- an endless parade of them marching out of the valley, circling the main bay, and finally losing their identity completely as they near the large north and south period-3 buds. Curiously, the elephants are not to be found in the Julia sets of that area, but they do exist in most of the odd-direction slices between the Mandelbrot and Julia directions. In today's picture we see 4 proto-elephants. The third from the right is the best formed, but even this one leaves much to be desired. To the left of the best elephant is a tall skinny fragmentary one, and at the left edge of the frame is a bit of a trunk without an elephant attached. At the right edge of the frame is a hump that looks like the rump of a large elephant. Actually, this is only a hump. No head or trunk exists beyond the right edge of the screen. I named the image "Elephant Eruption", since the elephants kind of seem to be appearing out of nowhere. When it came time to rate the image, I could give it a rating no better than a miserable 3. It takes more than some twisted elephant parts to make a good fractal. Hey, I can't help it if I like elephants! The calculation time of 4-2/3 minutes is true on the fast P2000 machine. On the slow old P200 unit, the image would take around 23 minutes to finish. Monday here at Fractal Central was a little too hazy, warm and humid for weather perfection, but the fractal cats enjoyed the temperature of 84F 29C anyway. FOTD -- June 25, 2007 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image came about when I subtracted 0.4 part of Z^(2.25) from 0.8 part of Z^(-1.25) and added C to create a parent fractal that consists of two main Mandeloids, the southern one far out of proportion, the northern one looking like a moth- eaten sweater. Avoiding these obvious features, today's scene is located in a trail of debris that stretches between the Mandeloids. I was undecided whether to rate today's image at a 6 or a 7, so I split the difference and rated it a 6-1/2. The name "Lake Disappointment" came about when I failed to reveal all the potential I thought the fractal had in it. I think there are actually several lakes of this name around the world, though at the moment, I cannot say where they are located. The calculation time of 1-1/2 minutes on the P2000 would stretch to 8 minutes on the old worn-out P200. But the fastest and most convenient way of viewing the scene in this technologically advanced electronic age is to go on-line to the FOTD web page at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and sit in awe of the image as it fills your screen. Another superb day graced Fractal Central on Sunday. Full sun, light winds and a temperature of 82F 28C can hardly be bettered for outdoor summer activities.
