Thus it is simpler: Buddhabrot_ { reset=2004 type=mandelcloud passes=1 center-mag=-0.300522/-4.44089e-016/0.8079007/1/-90/-1.23373533611470521e-014 params=751 float=y maxiter=751 fillcolor=0 inside=0 outside=summ sound=off } A BASIC script prints out the whole thing as a literal string, but the params and maxiter numbers are variables; a simple loop varies them from 2->751 and prints out all the PAR entries to one file, along with a BAT file which runs fractint and references the entries sequentially. XFRACTINT? I tried it a few years ago when I was investigating linux. It didn't seem to be as fast or as versatile as DOS fractint so I shelved it. I'm still waiting for 64 bit Fractint ... In the mean time, I've finally got ultrafractal to read some of my fractint pars, like for the universe sequences, but I have to hack them up a bit. Maybe I can re-render the U3 viddie in 32 bit color if I can get it right. But I don't know if current systems can be run 24/7/365; they are not as robust as older systems and tend to overheat. I can fix that, but the rendering time should be much quicker since a windows app can take advantage of the full proc capabilities and 32 bit memory addressing, but they actually render slower than fractint. Don't know why that is ... JoTz .

FOTD -- October 31, 2007 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Recently, I have had occasional trouble getting connected to Mindspring, which is why some recent FOTD's have been posted through my AOL account. Unfortunately, the philofractal list does not accept postings in the AOL format, which is why the philofractal posting might be later than usual. Hopefully, I can solve the access problem by switching to another Mindspring (Earthlink) access number. We'll see how it goes. Today's fractal goes very well indeed. One glance at the image shows why I named it "Blue Sea Shells". It could easily be a glimpse of a fantastic under-water garden. To reward myself for the small amount of extra effort I put into the coloring, I added an extra half point to the rating of a 7. The parent fractal sprawls far beyond the edges of the default opening screen, but the central feature is a string of bays which together resemble a large ant with a long mandible. Today's scene is located about halfway to the tip of this mandible. The calculation time of just over 2 minutes should be no problem. Map comparisons for duplicates

I am putting this on the general listing in case there are others interested whom I do not know about, but this is directed specifically to Jonathan Osuch. There is a problem with map files. They work fine for coloring, and in all ways intended. The problem is in comparing for duplication. Two identical maps as far as color values and sequence goes will not show as duplicate if one of the maps has been cycled and then saved. Would it be possible to have fractint list the map file used in the par even if the par is saved with colors? This would provide a reference by name to the map used in the par. Or could fractint somehow place a stop bit (sync place holder) in the map files so they could be aligned in the editor with a key entry? The best solution would be a program which first would enter place holders within the map file so that all maps would be uniform, then run a comparison for sequence of RGB values regardless of place. In other words, if the only difference between two, or more, map files was the linear order of the same values, it would show as a duplicate. I wonder how many map files on people's drives are actually duplicates, with the only difference being sequence? Just a thought. David M Fisher sunfish(a)intercom.net

FOTD -- October 30, 2007 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image takes us once again to one of the infinity of fractals created by the formula Z^sqrt(2)+C, this time to the fractal that appears 1.4142 levels up the logarithmic ladder, a fractal that resembles a limbless torso with a head attached -- a perfect parent fractal for the day before Halloween. The scene is located in the chaos on the eastern side of the head. The image shows a small minibrot and its surrounding pattern. As must always be the case in fractals where the power of Z is fractional, the features in the image are broken and scrambled. But the broken features make a rough kind of symmetrical pattern around the midget, which is barely striking enough to raise the image to FOTD status. I can give no logical reason for the name "Square-Root Picnic". Since I have done so many of these scrambled fractals with exponents of Z between 1 and 2, and achieved only a modicum of success, I could not give the image an honest rating, but it is still worth a look. The calculation time of 7 minutes is slightly slow for such a less-than-splendid image. To save time and frustration, I recommend going to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and viewing the finished image there. After a foggy and frosty start, Monday turned quite pleasant here at Fractal Central, with sunny skies, light winds, and a high temperature of 55F 18C. They must still remember the mouse that popped out of the hole in the floor by the radiator last year around this time. When no mouse appeared on Monday, I comforted the disappointed duo with a treat of tuna and cheddar cheese. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours. . Here is another MAP problem while we are on the subject. You have a fantastic fractal image but the colors not so good. You have THOUSANDS of map files accumulated over the years. How render this image with all the maps so to choose the best one? You can do manually with the "G" key, but thats tedious and takes forever. I was able to write a VB script that will RENDER and save the image from its parameters for any number of maps, you just have to type in the names of all the maps at the start and let it rip. An improvement, but still not ideal. So how about a way to load the GIF, change to a different map, and save. And do this in auto-batch mode for all the maps in the directory? I envision some kind of for-in-next loop to do it, but sofar unable to make it work. Any idears?? .

This parent fractal consists of 3 nearly circular large bays, with many smaller more irregular bays attached. Today's scene is located on the edge of a blunt valley in the westernmost irregular bay. I named the image "Sparkling Splendor". The minibrot at the center appears to be sparkling alone in a world of lurking dark- blue shapes. The entire scene impresses me as being well above FOTD average, which accounts for the rating of an exceptional 8. The included parameter file takes 3-1/2 minutes to finish on the fast machine and 17 minutes on the slow unit. It can be viewed much faster by going to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and checking it there. Brisk autumn conditions arrived here at Fractal Central on Sun- day, with north winds, sullen-looking clouds, and a temperature of 50F 10C. FOTD 28-10-07 (Seahorses go Deep [7])

FOTD -- October 28, 2007 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I found today's scene in the Mandelbrot set almost automatically. It lies in the Seahorse Valley area of a larger minibrot located near the tip of the long filament extending from the large period-3 north bud of the large minibrot on the main spike of the M-set. With that much said, I must tell that I named the image "Seahorses go Deep". I did this in recognition of its location deep in the Seahorse Valley of a larger minibrot. When all the naming was said and done, I rated the day's fractal work at a 7. It's really not such a bad image, perhaps a bit too busy for perfection, but considering that its magnitude is well into the range of arbitrary precision math, its calculation time of 8-1/2 minutes is really quite reasonable. But 8-1/2 minutes is still 8-1/2 minutes. Luckily, relief for possible fractal impatience is at hand. The finished image is or soon will be posted on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Actually, the only thing seahorsey about the image is its name. At this extreme magnitude, all minibrots begin to look the same, with circular rings after rings surrounding the midgets and obscuring most of the other detail. But the circular nature of the features in today's image can easily be escaped. Outzooming to the surface of the M-set will reveal some quite attractive and non-circular patterns on the way. Saturday began with rain here at Fractal Central, but by noon the clouds moved out, leading to a mostly sunny afternoon with a temperature of 66F 19C. The fractal cats, Nicholas and Cassandra, (Nico and Cassie), enjoyed the returning sunshine to the utmost. Fractal Lady and I took the afternoon off for a short trip to a nearby forest, which had been refreshed by the rain. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours. It might even be a great one, but there is no guarantee. It could just as easily be a loser. Until then, take care, and as Halloween approaches, don't be spooked by a specter. FOTD -- October 27, 2007 (Rating 8.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Let's have a little philosophical Halloween diversion before we get to the fractal discussion. Halloween is but four days away and everyone is thinking of ghostly things. In keeping with the spirit of the season, I was stopped on the street this morning by a reporter from the local newspaper and asked if I believe in ghosts. Apparently they were taking a poll of the local population. Since I had no time to spare, my answer was simply 'no'. But the facts are not so simple. Ghosts do exist! One thing for certain is that people do see ghosts. Legends of people being visited by ghosts exist in every culture. The question should have been, 'what do you think ghosts are?' Then I could have given the two most obvious answers: 1 -- A ghost is the surviving spirit of a dead person. 2 -- A ghost is an internally-generated mental image projected outward into the real world. Neither answer is totally satisfactory, since both answers raise more questions than they answer. The first answer raises the question of the existence and nature of surviving spirits, while the second answer questions the nature of both mental images and the external world. And the claim that a ghost is a mental image induced by the presence of a surviving spirit brings everything into question. IMO, it all comes down to the age-old problem about the nature of reality. If we could ever answer this question, (which I doubt), most of the other haunting questions would likely be answered at the same time. And speaking of ghosts, I was really spooked by today's image, which lies in the parent fractal that is created when 0.8 negative parts of Z^(-8.8) are combined with 5 negative parts of Z^(-1.8) and (1/C) is added. This parent consists of two large circular bays surrounded by many smaller irregular bays and minibrots. Today's scene is located on the shoreline of one of the large circular bays, in an area that at first appears to be totally non-critical, and where a pure minibrot would be the last thing expected. But not being put off by the apparently impossible, I checked the hopeless area anyway, and much to my surprise, I found a well-hidden minibrot. This minibrot lies nearly invisible at the center of today's image. The image was rendered in an unusual manner, with both the inside and outside parts set to 'fmod'. To see which parts are 'inside' and 'outside', reset the inside option to 'numb' and the outside option to 'iter'. The name of today's image, "Unexpectedly There", is a simple statement about the scene. The rating of 8-1/2 rewards me 1/2 point for the extra effort I put into smoothing the colors. The calculation time of 10-1/3 minutes may be cut by a minute or two by setting the passes to 'g'. But doing this misses some of the finer parts of the spirals. The all-around best way to see the image is to view it in finished form on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Heavy clouds, steady rain, and chilly temperatures made the Friday weather unpleasant here at Fractal Central. The fractal cats seemed to agree, for they spent a good part of the day snuggled in the warmest places they could find. My day was busy enough that I had little chance to complain about the inclement weather. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours.
