FOTD -- September 30, 2006 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's FOTD is really for the 30th of the month. Yesterday's FOTD was dated the 30th, but it actually was the FOTD for the 29th. I must have been groggy when I lost track of the actual date. There was no FOTD for the 28th. Oh, that poor Z^(2.003)+C rectangle. What a series of convolu- tions it was put through! In today's image we see it as a dis- torted, apparently melting picture frame that consists totally of 'inside' stuff and therefore doesn't really exist. But the rectangle that is not really there is filled with semi-random debris, made visible by the 'bof61' inside fill. Not all of the image is inside stuff however. Set the inside to 'numb' to see which is which. The orientation of the slice is within four degrees of the Julia direction. This Julia aspect may be seen by changing the first three parameters to 90. As expected, when this is done, the melting picture frame contracts into a near but not quite perfect rectangle. I have not followed the picture-frame very far from the Julia orientation, but I doubt that it continues to any of the other five perpendicular orientations. I named the picture "Super Surrealistic". Surreal means more real than real, so it is anybody's guess what super surreal might mean. I gave it this name because the melting frame reminds me of the famous melting watches. Since I'm not sure what I think of the scene, I gave it no rating. If I had, it would have probably rated about a 7. The calculation time of just under 4 minutes will make no one unhappy, unless, that is, they don't care very much about frac- tals. But even those whose interest in fractals is fleeting will enjoy the melting fractal picture frame when they can view it without effort on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Partly cloudy skies, chill breezes and a temperature of 59F 15C here at New Fractal Central on Friday bothered the fractal cats not at all. They spent most of the day being mad at each other for something that happened yesterday. But it is hard for cats to hold a grudge more than one day, so by the time their treats of cheese and tuna were served, the quarrel had been forgotten. My day went rather smoothly. FOTD -- September 30, 2006 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image keeps us in the vicinity of the 2.003 rectangle. This time we view it, or what is left of it, in the Parabolic direction. And what remains is very little. The brilliant blue background in the center is the leftovers of our once near-perfect rectangle. Such a total transformation is rarely seen. The entire image consists of normally invisible 'inside' stuff made visible by the bof61 inside fill. I put not enough effort into the work to give it a rating. The name "Flying Saucer" was inspired by the vaguely UFO shaped ring of red elements surrounding the saucer. The 6-3/4 minute wait for the image to calculate may be avoided by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Morning sun gave way to midday clouds and afternoon downpours here at New Fractal Central on Thursday. The accompanying thunder caught the attention of the fractal cats, but not for long. They somehow got into a boxing match, unarmed of course, and finished the day sulking at each other. My day started in a rush, but came under control by the time the rain moved in. Things look like they will be on the slow side well into next week, which can only mean better fractals. FOTD -- September 27, 2006 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: In today's image we make a quick return to the MandelbrotBC2 formula to check a scene in the Z^(1.2)+C Mandeloid as it appears 12 levels up the infinite complex logarithmic spiral. I assume that a midget or a hole of some sort lies at the center of today's image. But even if it is a bottomless pit in the image, the scene is still attractive enough with its lilac and blue tones and its lightning-like filaments circling the depression. Since the image is another almost-automatic one, I did not give it a rating. The name I chose, "Lilac Icefall", came to me as a whim. I really see little in the picture to remind one of a mass of shattered blocks of ice. The passes=b option works best with today's image, and it is also the fastest. The 1-1/2 minute render time should try the patience of only those with handicapped computers. For conven- ience, the finished image is posted on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The partly cloudy weather on Tuesday with a temperature of 75F 24C made no impression on the fractal cats here at New Fractal Central. They were more interested in chasing invisible crit- ters up and down the hallway. (I would like to see them catch one of the things they chase, so we could see what it is.) When the cats failed to catch anything, they satisfied themselves with their faces in their food dishes. My day was very busy. The job is about half finished. From the rate things are moving, I cannot guarantee an FOTD for tomorrow (actually I never can) but I'll see what I can do. Hal Lane's flaming comet from Hell (or is it a flying carpet?) inversion thru the 4th dimension is posted: http://www.fractal-animation.net/vid/4d_twist.zip It is WMV format, 640x480, 6.9MB. As always, there is some resolution hit due to the MPEG compression; the 800x600 AVI is 100 freakin' MB! But if enuf people scream for it I'll consider posting it. FOTD -- September 26, 2006 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The expected rush job has arrived, so I will need to keep today's discussion brief. Today's scene is a slice of the Z^(2.000001)+C Julibrot, cut at an oblique angle through the East Valley of the large Midget on the Mandelbrot main stem. The tiny hole at the center is broken into two parts. In the Mandelbrot plane, the hole appears as a quadratic midget, with part of a second midget nearby, exactly as is the case with the hole at the center of today's scene.. In this area of the parent mandeloid fractal, the negative spike is infinitely divided, though much enlargement is necessary before this division becomes visible. Today's scene lies at the edge of the nest of spikes. I did not give the image a rating but I did give it a name. I named it "Momentary Diversion" because I found it almost in a moment. There was no surprise involved. I knew from the begin- ning that I would find this scene. The render time of just over 5 minutes may be dispensed with by going to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and viewing the full image there. Things started slow but soon got busy here at New Fractal Central on Monday. With lots of sun and a temperature of 68F 20C, the weather was near perfect, but the fractal cats, who got too little attention to fill their needs, were too sulky to notice it. For me things were again hectic. I just managed to finish the FOTD. The next in the unending series of FOTD's is scheduled to appear in 24 hours or so. FOTD -- September 25, 2006 (Not Rated) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is titled "Nobody's Perfect". The body I am referring to is myself. I recently wrote that the strange rectangle appears only in the Julia sets of the Z^(2.003)+C Julibrot. But today, just to be double sure, I carefully checked the Mandelbrot aspect of the area. Nobody could have been more surprised than me when I found the near-perfect rectangles scattered everywhere. To make things even worse, there are Mandelbrot midgets in the area, surrounded by empty rectangles. All this goes to show that, just because I have been writing the FOTD for over 9 years, makes me no expert in the field of fractals, which remain unpredictable. I doubt that anyone including Mandelbrot himself could claim to know any more than a tiny part of all there is to know about fractals. Today's image shows a most curious feature, which almost looks like a living figure. It has round holes and rectangles every- where.
