FOTD -- March 02, 2006 (Not Rated) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal is a Julia set of the Z^(1.5)+C Mandeloid as it appears 100 levels up the logarithmic ladder. The corresponding point of the Mandeloid is located in the southern branch of a seahorse-type valley curiously located at +0.75 on the X-axis. As has so often been the case lately, I gave the image neither name nor rating. Luckily, the render time is a very brief 1-1/2 minutes even on my slow old machine. On speedier units the image will calculate in well under one minute, about the time it will take to download the completed image from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The brilliant sun and temperature of 50F 10C here at Old Fractal Central on Wednesday were just what the dynamic cat duo had been waiting for. They spent the entire afternoon lurking in the holly patch, even going so far as to chatter at the robins that stopped by to feast on the few remaining holly berries. At one time the duo would have scampered up the trees after the birds, but those days are long gone. My day was very busy, and tomorrow will likely be a repeat. Thanx all 4 replies, the pics here: http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/~pbourke/raytracing/povfrac/final/ are awesome! I will checkout POV-ray then, hopefully I can make sense out of the code so I can write animation scripts like with fractint. Time will tell. JoTz

Greetings, The old HTML code for doing a site search within Spanky using AltaVista is not working (see the bottom of page at following URL): http://spanky.triumf.ca/www/fractint/findex.html When I originally told Noel Giffin about the HTML search coding years ago, I too had used this on my site. But AltaVista kept changing the way it worked, which meant I would have to make chamges to my HTML code. I have since switched over to using Google on the "Fractal Census" main page, with better results and faster response. FOTD -- March 01, 2006 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: You know things are bad when you get the remnants of an e-mail 'phishing' scam from the philofractal list. Believe it or not, this is what I received a day or so ago. At least the sender did not try to convince me that I had won a fractal lottery that I had never entered. I named today's image "SCA". I leave it to the fractalist to decide what the letters stand for. Two possible things are 'small craft advisory' and 'sickle-cell anemia', neither of which has much to do with fractals. What *does* have something to do with fractals is the formula Z^(1.5)+C as it appears 555 levels up the endless logarithmic ladder. The Mandeloid at this level is little more than a roughly circular bay, with few buds that might add interest, but its Julia sets are far more interesting. Today's image is the Julia set of an inconspicuous valley of the Mandeloid. It is a rather unique image, shaped something like a comma turned sideways, which is why I decided to give it a kind of name and a rating of 7. The calculation time of under 3 minutes will make running the included parameter file an easy task. Those who do not or can not run Fractint parameter files may see the image by downloading it from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> A slightly milder temperature of 41F 5C and a partly cloudy sky here at Old Fractal Central on Tuesday were not quite enough to please the fractal cats, who were outside only a few minutes before coming in to ask for extra tuna.
