FOTD -- February 20, 2005 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: In the 'Basically' image of two days ago we saw what happens to midgets on the main stem of the Mandelbrot set when they are very close to being swallowed up behind the bailout radius. In today's image I checked to see what would happen to a midget on the northern filament when it is about to be swallowed up. I reduced the bailout to 2, a setting that cuts off the extremi- ties of the M-set, and zoomed in on the point where the eastern branch of the northern filament vanishes behind the shrinking bailout radius. I chose the closest midget to the cut-off point that I could find. The midget is a very small one, requiring a magnitude that borders on the arbitrary-precision range. I have entered the mathtolerance=/0 into the parameter file to be cer- tain that the more accurate math is used in the rendering. This slows the image somewhat, but the render time of 7-1/2 minutes is still quite reasonable. The overall effect is much the same as what we saw in the 'Basically' image, though the radiating filaments zig-zag, in comparison to the earlier image, where the filaments are straight. The earlier image worked best when the outside was set to 'summ'. Today's image works best however with the outside set to 'tdis'. I had hoped for something a bit better from the day's adventure, and my disappointment shows in the image rating, which has dropped to a 6. The name "Whin Peel" is a variation of the word 'pinwheel'. Things could be worse; a rating of 6 is still above average. And the 7 minutes spent in rendering can be saved by downloading the completed GIF image from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Despite ample sun, the temperature stayed below freezing all day here at Fractal Central on Saturday. The fractal cats, whose delicate ears are subject to frostbite, waited until late after- noon before asking to go out, and then strayed no farther than 6 feet from the back door. 20 minutes later, when they were warm again inside, Tippy brought up the topic of tuna, and Thomas agreed. Today is starting almost as cold, and in addition the clouds are increasing with heavy snow forecast by evening. I doubt that the duo will have a good day. The philosophy will appear in a few days. If it were done subjectively, that is if it were dreamed, I doubt that it would carry much conviction. :-) I have read a number of books about consciousness, and so far they have done more to convince me that self-awareness is not an emergent phenomenon of the brain than to convince me that it is. The books describe in intimate detail the inner workings of the brain in various stages of consciousness and unconsciousness. But they all invariably arrive at the point where interacting neurons must fade into the background and conscious thought emerge. At this point the writers imply, 'and then a miracle happens'. And at this point, I start thinking, 'the writer is merely spinning a lot of fancy words. He knows quite a bit about what happens in the conscious brain but he really does not know how this activity produces consciousness'. I would like the cognitive theorists to be more specific at the point of the miracle. It is one thing to describe what happens in the visual cortex when we observe a lovely scene; it is quite another to explain how a mushy pound or so of meat can have the awareness of the activity of its visual cortex. How can a brain be aware that it is observing a lovely scene and then feel the emotional elation? If our present methods of doing science are incapable of finding the answer, perhaps we should invent some other means of investigation. To keep on topic, I would also like to know where fractals come from. Jim M.

FOTD -- February 19, 2005 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image was created with the MandelbrotMix3a formula. This formula works much like the MandelbrotMix4 formula, with the exception that it combines four different powers of Z rather than two, and a critical starting point of Z must be calculated separately and entered as the real(p5) parameter. Since calculating critical points is too much like work, I rarely use the M-Mix3a formula. To produce today's image I combined various portions of Z^(2), Z^(-3), Z^(4), and Z^(5), and entered them as the first four parameters. The (p5) parameter is one of the formula's critical points. The parent fractal consists of two large Mandeloids surrounded by a horde of much smaller isolated and disconnected Mandelbrot midgets. Today's image shows one of these cut-off midgets. At first glance today's image appears to be a partially evaporated one. This is not the case. Fractals whose generating formulas contain positive powers of Z do not evaporate. Other than the brilliant white inside of the midget, the image consists totally of outside material. The skeletal effect was achieved entirely by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'tdis' and then creating a sharp discontinuity in the color palette, a fact which may easily be demonstrated by rotating the palette a few steps in either direction and observing how drastically the image changes. I named the image "Super Membranes". When I gave it this name I was thinking of 'M-theory' or 'membrane theory' the latest fad in the search for a theory of almost everything, which is augmenting and perhaps replacing 'superstring theory' just as superstring theory replaced the 'grand unified theory'. The rating of an 8 might be a bit overblown, but the image is one that makes the viewer take a second look, so a rating of 8 it will be. For me it looks like an average day coming up, which describes most all days here at Fractal Central. FOTD 18-02-05 (Basically a Fractal [7])

FOTD -- February 18, 2005 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With today's fractal image we return to the grand-daddy of all fractals, the Mandelbrot set, where we examine a tiny midget near the extremity of the negative stem. We are in an area where the bailout radius makes a tremendous difference in the appearance of the image, especially when the image has been rendered with the 'outside' set to 'summ'. Though the magnitude of today's image is in the arbitrary precision range, it is still a fast one, rendering in under 2 minutes on my machine, making it easy to check the effect of changing the bailout radius. This area of the M-set has been so thoroughly explored that little remains to be said about the image other than to state the fact that it is basically a fractal, which explains the name, "Basically a Fractal". I was ready to rate the image at an average 5, but then I found today's color palette. The colors work unusually well on this particular image, and enabled me to raise the rating to a 7. As has been the case for a number of years, the completed image has been posted for download on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The philosophy is not yet ready, and will take a few days yet. But anything worth having is worth waiting for, so be patient and remember that patience is rewarded. A cold wind brought flurries of snow to Fractal Central Thursday afternoon. The fractal cats tried to enjoy their time in the yard, but the temperature just above freezing was too chilly for their sensitive whiskers, and they came inside after less than 15 minutes. This is exactly the kind of stuff that convinces me that the materialistic view of consciousness is a blind alley. I am convinced that it is impossible for the activity of the brain to generate consciousness. The writer of the article on the web site apparently thinks otherwise, but he fails to make it clear how, in his opinion, self-awareness can arise from the interaction of unconscious brain regions. He should read a few books such as "The Astonishing Hypothesis" by Francis Crick and re-write his article to make his idea of the actual consciousness-generation process clearer. I am still waiting to see someone describe the actual birth of that initial spark of self-awareness. I want to see the change from objective to subjective made as clear as the teachings of geology. I will not accept any evasive apologies such as 'some things we shall never know'. And BTW, if we're going to continue this discussion, let's move it to the philofractal list. FOTD -- February 17, 2005 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image takes us one final time to the parent fractal that is based on variations of the real cube-root of -2. The visit has most certainly been productive, but the time has come to move on to new vistas. I named today's image "Fractal Pyrotechnics". The gaudy and perhaps overly intense colors remind me of a display of fire- works. The scene is located very near that of yesterday's image, though it is not 'evaporated', and lies not quite so deep in the parent valley. The rating of an 8 seems appropriate for such a brilliant scene. This rating might be a bit exaggerated, but I also might have a tendency to under-rate my images, so the rating of an 8 will remain. To assure that the image renders at the correct magnitude, I have inserted the mathtolerance entry into the parameter file. This entry forces the program to continue calculating even beyond the limit of total precision, but it must be cleared from the en- vironment to enable the program to switch to arbitrary precision math when this is available and needed. The render time of 33 minutes is a bit on the slow side, but the wait may be avoided by downloading the completed image from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The time for the next installment of philosophy, when one of two extremes could happen, is but a few days off. At that time, depending on the opinion of the reader, either the secrets of the universe will be revealed, or I will show myself to be totally mistaken. It is most unlikely that I will solve a puzzle which, for thousands of years, men greater than myself have been unable to solve. It is equally unlikely that every thing I say will be totally incorrect. The best I can hope for is that those who claim I am mistaken will point out and correct my mistakes, and not simply disagree because my opinion conflicts with their world-view. The outcome will be, as it always is, a continuation of the puzzle, but it's still fun to speculate, and I excel at speculation, so don't go anywhere. Wednesday morning was sunny and warm, with a temperature of 63F 17C, but clouds moved in shortly after noon and a rain squall struck an hour later, dropping the temperature to 48F 9C. An extra treat of tuna was needed to ease the fractal cats' disap- pointment. Today is starting with hazy sun and midwinter cold. The duo seems doomed to more disappointment. For me it looks like the usual day coming up, meaning finish the commercial work and see what waits in fractal land. It's a good thing I got my life long ago. I have no idea where I could find one now that fractals have arrived. I have no idea where I'll find the next FOTD image either, but for some reason, the images always seem to be there when I go searching. FOTD 15-02-05 (Iterative Amusement [9])

FOTD -- February 15, 2005 (Rating 9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: To add a bit of variety to today's adventure, I changed the portions of Z in the parent fractal that I have been exploring for a week. Instead of positive portions, we now have negative portions. This change creates an even more interesting fractal. Yesterday's image turned out so well that I tried the same partial-evaporation trick again today. I rendered the scene with the inside set to 'bof61' and the outside set to 'tdis'. The resulting image rates another 9. I found today's scene in a part of the parent fractal shaped like a fan. There are many more unusual features in this new parent fractal, which I will be exploring for a few more days before moving on to something entirely new. Much of the purpose of fractals is simply amusement. This is the reason I named today's image "Iterative Amusement". The relatively fast render time of 3-1/2 minutes makes the image that much more amusing. The image may be seen in even less time by downloading it from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> It rained all day Monday here at Fractal Central, keeping the fractal cats safely confined to their indoor shelf by the win- dow. They had one thrilling moment when a squirrel carelessly climbed onto the ledge outside the glass, and they both sprang to the attack. When the squirrel saw two cats eyeing him, he took off like a bat out of you-know-where. Today is starting cloudy, but it is milder, and promises to be far more pleasant, both for the squirrel and the dynamic duo. For me, it will be a satisfactory day if I end it with no work piled up. The philosophy is still a couple days off, but the next FOTD will appear in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and think kindly of your amusing fractals. FOTD -- February 16, 2005 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: When the time arrived to name today's image, I remembered one of the greatest disappointments of my childhood -- the evening when my father explained to me that the professional wrestling exhibition I was watching on TV was not a true competitive sport, but rather an entertaining show. The whole thing is an act, he told me. The wrestlers have a script, and the winner of the match is written in the script, he explained. I had already begun to suspect that something about the 'sport' was not as it appeared, and was truly let down to hear that my heroes were mere theatrical performers presenting a pre-arranged show. A couple weeks later my father took me to a wrestling match at a local college so that I could see the real thing. Without the theatrics, the real thing was totally boring. I soon lost interest entirely in wrestling. The name "Broken Arms", which I gave to today's image, is an attempt to capture the spirit of excitement I felt when I saw those theatrical wrestlers performing on TV, with all the phony blood and broken bones, and assumed that I was watching the real thing. Of course, bones were rarely actually broken in professional wrestling, just as no bones are broken in today's image. Broken bones are impossible in a fractal because fractals have no bones. Fractals are nothing more than one of the things we people have decided to do with numbers. Today's image rates an 8. This rating might be a bit overblown, but the image is still a rather striking 'evaporated' one, which was found in the parent fractal of yesterday's FOTD fractal. The render time of over 26 minutes is slow, so I advise downloading the finished product from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Tuesday was near perfect here at Fractal Central. The weather brought warm afternoon sun and a temperature of 61F 16C. These pleasant conditions made the fractal cats so happy that they passed the entire afternoon in the holly thicket. Only the tiniest treat of tuna was needed in the evening. This morning is starting in a similar manner, but rain is forecast for later this afternoon. Maybe the duo can have their outdoor time before the rain arrives. For me, it looks like another in the unending string of near- average days coming up. The next FOTD will apepar in 24 hours. The next philosophy, which may be believed or not, will take a few more days. Until tomorrow's FOTD, take care, and one can enjoy as many fractals as they wish, and never gain a gram. Fractint-Multifractal-Artefacts

Hi, the image came about in the initial stages of my multifractal project. I erased the formula when I saw it was buggy, the image was not finalized. When I looked at it, it was too late. It contained artefacts, small fractals ready to zoom into within the circular "windows", which are created by Linda Allisonïs many-mods formula. They are not possible to reproduce, so they must be artefacts. Lately, when I cleaned up the work folder I saw that the dos-commander had created a backup file. So voila, here it is.
