FOTD -- October 02, 2005 (Rating 5)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
One plus one equals two. That simple fact is true, at least in
our universe. Russell proved it in his masterwork almost a
century ago while trying to demonstrate that math is completely
self-consistent. (Godel soon proved him wrong.) But would one
plus one equal two in every possible universe? Who knows? And
I'm not so sure it's true everywhere in even our own universe.
After all, according to relativity, the velocity of light added
to the velocity of light equals the velocity of light. If the
velocity of light equals X, then X+X=X, (or one plus one equals
one). I guess it's all relative to how one and one are added
together.
The rating of today's image is also relative. I created it with
a formula I wrote around 8 years ago and named TowerExp02. But
I soon put the formula into cold storage. Yesterday, when I
opened it for the first time since then, I found why I had put
it away.
Today's image consists almost entirely of inside material made
visible by the bof61 inside fill. Relatively speaking, the
image is average, and therefore rates a 5. The name "Wind-blown
Pyramid" came about when I imagined one of the Egyptian pyramids
in a sandstorm. Of course, pyramids made of solid stone do not
bend in the wind like today's fractal pyramid is doing, but
neither do fractals obey the laws of the physical world.
The included parameter file renders in 3-3/4 minutes on my worn-
out 9-1/2 year old machine with the exhaust fan that must be
kick started by hand. On the newer XP units, it it runs at all,
it will finish in a minute or so.
But all rendering problems may be bypassed by downloading the
pre-rendered image from the FOTD web site at:

The absolutely perfect weather on Saturday here at Fractal
Central was mirrored in the absolutely perfect behavior of the
fractal cats. They are behaving absolutely perfectly so often
lately that I am beginning to wonder what has happened to the
Thomas and Tippy I knew for almost 15 years, the cat duo who
once frantically chased each other all around the house and
yard. I rather miss the thunder of cat feet dashing up and down
the stairs, and the thrashing of the bushes as they dash about
after each other. Oh well, the weather can't remain perfect
forever, and cats can't be good forever.
The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours give or take a few. Until
that wondrous moment of enlightenment arrives, take care, and
seeking truth is one thing, recognizing it when one finds it is
quite another.

"good job warren" ?
What'd he do? There was nothing in my fractint list server email, I think
the file was "scrubbed".
Sounds like he did an exponent animation. I got that beat - check out
http://www.sonic.net/~jot/n2p.zip
And, as he asked - how do this without rendering the frames individually
manually?
Use my animation program!
Stay Cool. It's gonna get hot soon. Really hot.

FOTD -- October 01, 2005 (Rating 6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
We have come to the end of the series of scenes in the fractals
created by the square root of two. The series was neither a
great success nor a great failure, but it did contain a few
interesting images. It is now a new month and time to start a
new theme. For the month of October I have decided to unpack
some of the formulas I wrote a while back but then stored away
and forgot about.
For today's FOTD I unpacked a formula I wrote around 10 years
ago and named 'ManZpwrAbs'. I have no idea why I wrote it or
what it is supposed to do, though I am certain it has nothing
to do with body-building. The images it draws have a kind of
'all look the same' appearance, but some of them are worth at
least a second glance.
At first glance, the parent fractal of today's image looked like
a giant bat flying west. Then I gave it that second glance, and
noticed several interesting areas. Zooming into one of these
areas, I found total chaos. I switched the 'outside' to 'fmod'
with a 'proximity' factor of 1.5. The resulting fractal was a
twisted, stretched and skewed chaotic mess, but it held areas of
promise. By untwisting, unstretching and unskewing a small area
of the image, I found today's scene, an image that is just
chaotic enough to be interesting.
The large spiral on the right is actually two spirals, one
winding clockwise, the other, counter-clockwise. This "Double
Spiral" inspired the name. The rest of the scene is strangely
unpredictable, with features scattered about haphazardly, almost
like a trash dump in the 'real' world. Some of these smaller
features might make better images than today's, but at this time
I will not check. There are too many old forgotten formulas to
work through.
The rating of a 6 is perhaps a bit high, but I decided to do
myself a favor and treat myself to a slightly above average
FOTD rating. There can be no complaints about the render time,
which is a speedy 1-1/2 minutes even on my 9-year-old broken-
down P200 machine.
But my tired old computer can at least run Fractint, which is
more than some of the newer units I have checked can do. Unfor-
tunately, some fractal fans have one of these new-fangled
machines, and are therefore Fractint-deprived. But the cure is
available on the FOTD web site at:
<http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html>
where the already-rendered image has been posted.
Friday was sunny but a bit chilly here at Fractal Central. The
high temperature of 68F 20C fell within the cats' comfort zone,
enabling them to spend the afternoon lurking in comfort in the
holly thicket. My day was rather busy, but everything was
wrapped up before the day ended. Today is starting much the
same. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours. Until then, take
care, and launch out into new territory.
