FOTD -- September 21, 2004 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Over the past several days I have been trying different things with the 3200mhz machine I recently purchased for business purposes, to see how fast I could get it to render fractals. I got so involved in the project that I neglected the FOTD. Since the new P4-3200 unit is 16 times as fast as the old P200 fractal- dedicated machine, it would appear to be able to calculate fractals in 1/16 the time, but so far I have managed only an 8x increase in speed, which is actually a bit better than I had expected. I suspect that, though the new unit runs 16 times as many cycles per second, each cycle does only half as much work. The 8x increase in fractal speed might be all I'll get from the new machine. This is of little importance, for it will be quite some time before the new unit will be available full-time for fractals. Today's fractal image lies in the fractal that results when the Mandelbrot formula Z^1.5+C is calculated 13 levels down the complex logarithmic hyperspiral. The parent fractal looks some- thing like a little man in a racing car (It reminds me of Smokey Stover for those old enough to remember). The image is located in a prominent valley on the southern shore of the parent. I named the picture "Circled by Limes" because of the lime-green circular spiral basins that surround the midget at the center. While searching for a rating, I could find little out of the ordinary that might make the image an above-average one. As a result, I was able to give it a rating no higher than a 4. But that lowly rating is raised to an overall value of 95 by the relatively short render time of 4+ minutes. While rendering a fractal for oneself is the most fun, seeing the completed image is more convenient. But Sunday and Monday were ideal for cats, who took full advantage of the ideal conditions by spending almost the entire two days hiding in the holly patch at the bottom of the yard, cleverly avoiding the burdock burrs. Today is again starting ideally. The cats should be happy. If I had not started trying things with the new computer, the work backlog would have been under control. But as it is, the work is still a bit behind. A week or so of effort should bring it under control however. The next fractal will appear in two days on Sep 23. FOTD -- September 17, 2004 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Due to a small but hurried job, today's FOTD will be short. Today's image takes us to the northeast shoreline of the main bay of the Mandelbrot set, where we explore rather deep into the inland side of the north branch of the valley leading to the period-6 bud. We find a midget there, with a much smaller midget in its eastern suburbs. This smaller midget and its surroundings are illustrated in today's image. It is a very chaotic area, which is the reason for the name. But there is enough order in the chaos to add features of interest. Due to the work rush, I had little time to color the image, which is a little shy on the green. As a result, I could rate it no higher than a 4. The render time of under 5 minutes gives an overall value of 81. Jim, Physicists have asked the question: why don't we remember the future? Perhaps occasionally dreaming lets us do this. Last Friday night I had a dream that there was some kind of institute of learning that was carved into a large smooth hill made out of rock. Different floors were traversed by sliding down well worn "slides" in the rock. It was really quite fun. Saturday I heard about fireworks occurring in the area at a local school. When we arrived, there was a good hill on which to climb and sit to watch them. It was then that I realized everything I had seen in the dream was the same "shape". I sat down on the hill and felt like I was at the location of the dream. The hill was steep enough that children who were there were sliding and tumbling down the hill. Skeptics can say its not possible but you can't know until you've experienced it yourself. There was a science fiction story I read once as a child called Pink Worms. It described that if you could see the fourth dimension of time in its entirety, people would look like "pink worms" extending from the day they were born till the day they died. There would many of them intertwined and streaming all over the place the paths being extremely complex but continuous. It was then that I came up with the idea, what if you could pluck that line like a string. This is how I've been able to rationalize this kind of reverse information flow. Any time I've ever felt like this, it was always some event that ultimately was emotionally charged. In the case of the fireworks, I find them quite exciting even as an adult. I don't know if there is anything to prove unless you insist people believe you. I can't prove any of my theory but I've yet to see any proof that it can't be done other than it usually doesn't happen (which isn't proof at all). --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. FOTD -- September 15, 2004 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: To create a good fractal, one must put adequate effort into coloring it. I did put some effort into today's image, and it shows. As a result of the coloring, the image rates an exceptional 8. I named it "All in Order" because I am more satisfied by it than I have been with recent FOTD images. Another thing helping the image is that I rendered it with the outside set to 'real'. The 'real' option adds the real value of the escaping points to the iteration count. The effectiveness of this option varies from image to image, but in today's case it works very well. The formula behind the image combines some Z^(1.2) with some Z^(-1.2) before adding (1/C). The resulting parent fractal is divided into two parts, (much as all Gaul was divided into three parts). These two parts are a very distorted Mandeloid on the left and a less-distorted Mandeloid on the right. The Mandeloids are surrounded by much fractal debris filled with action, though this debris did not enter into today's image. Today's image is located near the tip of a side branch of a filament extending from a sub-bud on the northern shore of the main bud of the less-distorted Mandeloid. Scenes in fractals are almost always *near* points, such as the tips of filaments. Due to the unending nature of fractals, it is impossible to find exact points. The sought-after point runs away as fast as it is zoomed in on. A good example of the futility of such a chase is to try to find the 'last' midget on the main negative stem of the Mandelbrot set. When adjusted for the render time of 12 minutes, the rating of 8 gives an overall value of 66. But wait! Running the parameter file is not the only way of seeing the image. The cats were quite happy. Tuesday was cloudy with showers in the afternoon and a temperature of 75F 24C. The cats were not so happy, and showed it by tearing up a faxed message as it came in. Even in their senior years, the fractal cats are fascinated by the fax machine. Luckily, the message was fax spam, offering me a reduced rate on my next shipment to Taiwan. Since I have no plans on shipping anything to Taiwan in the foreseeable future, the cats were exonerated. But this morning it is raining again. Can the cats stay out of trouble? The work is actually slowing down here at F.C. This can only mean that soon the fractals will not only be more plentiful but of higher quality as well. I might even have a chance to philos- ophize. FOTD -- September 13, 2004 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Things are still hopping here at F.C., so once again the discus- sion will be short. Today's image lies in the parent fractal that results when some Z^(-2) is subtracted from some just plain Z and (1/C) is added. This parent appears as a vague Mandeloid rotated -120 degrees. Its most identifiable feature is its East Valley, which in this case lies on the NNW border of the main bay, a feature that could more accurately be called the ocean, for there is little resemblance to a bay. I named the image "Erin Land". For some reason, most likely its overall green color theme, the image reminds me of Ireland. For variety, I used the outside=atan option in rendering the scene. It gives a livelier appearance than the basic and overworked outside=iter option. The colors are rather brilliant, a fact that I noticed when I gave the scene its rating of a liberal 7. Unfortunately, the slow render time of almost 52 minutes permits an overall value of only 13. But the image is still interesting, and as always, will soon be available on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The near-perfect weather here at Fractal central over the past few days kept the fractal cats quite happy. Today is progres- sing near perfectly also, so I expect more happiness from the cat quarter. For me, I think I see light at the end of the work backlog tunnel, but there is still a way to go. distributed animation project

I remember seeing a inquiry here a few months ago about volunteers to render pieces of a big fractal animation. I lost the original mail and I couldn't find anything about it in the list archive. Did I miss the whole project? Did it ever get started? On a tangential note, the list archive at http://www.xmission.com/pub/lists/fractint/archive/?1095028647 seems to be a bit behind. The last message I found was from Dec 2001. Is there another archive somewhere?

FOTD -- September 09, 2004 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene on a filament of a small midget on a larger filament on the northeast border of the largest bud of the Mandelbrot set. On my tired old P200 machine it renders in 32 minutes. On the new 3200mhz unit it renders in just under 8 minutes, and that is without any optimizing. The new machine properly displays the VESA super-VGA resolutions up to SF7, which is 1024x768x256. It almost manages SF9. Since I have done no optimizing, I could probably get Fractint running significantly faster if I tried. I could also probably make the SF9 resolution work. I have noticed several program quirks, such as sudden slow-downs in the rendering speed, which likely could be worked out. Since the new unit probably will not be used for fractals for some time yet, I have not yet decided to exert the effort of optimizing it for Fractint and working out the quirks. But when things get caught up, I probably will. I named the image "Mandel Paw-Prints". And why not? The name is as good as any other I might have thought of. When adjusted for the render time of 32 minutes, the rating of 6 gives an overall value of 19. As I remarked above, the image renders in 32 minutes. I have been reading of some access problems with the FOTD web site, but I have had no problems in accessing the site. Unsettled weather over the past few days made for unsettled cats. For some reason they got into a tussle Wednesday after- noon -- a very undignified thing for such aged cats to do. Basically, I experienced seven consecutive nights of extremely vivid and disturbing dreams. This was on the nights of Sep 4 through Sep 10. The dreams were of crashing planes, fireballs, falling buildings, piles of mangled bodies, etc. I have never before or since had such a series of dreams. Somehow, hints of what was to happen on the 11th made an impression on my sleeping mind. I realize that this violates the law of causality. Skeptics have told me that it was one of those unlikely coincidences that happen every so often. But the doubters did not experience the dreams. I know with absolute certainty that information from the future somehow moved backward in time, or perhaps my mind moved forward in time. It makes no difference. The effect is the same. The important thing is that precognition is considered to be one of those goofy things that no rational, scientifically literate person would believe. Yet I now know that precognition, though it certainly is not an everyday event, does in fact occasionally happen. To me, this means that the macroscopic world works in some ways that are non- intuitive, just as the microscopic world does, and leads me to wonder if any of the other non-intuitive things currently considered goofy such as mental telepathy, mind-over-matter, out-of-body travel, etc. actually do exist.
