FOTD 18-07-04 (Not So Deep [6])

FOTD -- July 18, 2004 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: There is no mistake. Today's image renders in 23 seconds. The scene is located in a spiral in the star of the order-13 radical on the south shore of East Valley of the Mandelbrot set. I named the image "Not So Deep" because it is not quite deep enough to require arbitrary precision math. I could just as easily have named it "String of Pearls" in recognition of the sinuous line of white pearl-like features surrounding the midget. I think the overall value of today's image, which is 1550, sets a new record. But most of this is due to the very short render time. The rating of a 6, which indicates an image just a little above average, is far more indicative of its worth. Because of its speed, I am currently concentrating on the M-set as a source of my FOTD images. When, if ever, I finally get the work caught up, I will return to the more exotic formulas (formulae for the over-educated) and the FOTD will return to its regular every-day schedule. Though today's image renders in less time than it takes a computer to boot up, it is available for instant download on Paul's FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The Friday and Saturday weather was uneventful here at Fractal Central. 3 Types of Attractors

>From Osher Doctorow mdoctorow(a)comcast.net I've introduced three probabilistic-statistics Attractor types in sci.stat.math, which readers can also access via Math Forum as keywords. As I mentioned last time, there is the type characterized by: 1) P(A-->B) = P(A), P(B/A) = P(A) where P(A-->B) = 1 + P(AB) - P(A) and P(B/A) = P(AB)/P(A) and where AB is the intersection of sets/events A, B. The slash / in P(AB)/P(A) is division if P(A) is not 0, but the slash in P(B/A) stands for "given", that is the prob- ability of B given A. P(A) is the probability of A. P(A-->B) is the Probable Influence of A on B. There are two other types, given fist by: 2) P(A-->B) > .95 and P(AB) > 0 3) P(A-->B) > .95 and P(AB) = 0 and their conditional probability analogs: 2') P(B/A) > .95 and P(AB) > 0 3') P(B/A) > .95 and P(AB) = 0 (impossible because P(B/A) = P(AB)/P(A)) By substituting for P(AB) into (2), (3), (2' ) it turns out that P(A) - P(AB) < .05 is equivalent to (2) and P(B) > .95P(A) is equivalent to (2'), while 3 is equiv- alent to P(A-->B) = 1 - P(A) > .95 or P(A) < .05 but in this last case only with the condition that P(AB) = 0. The second type, represented by (2) and/or (3), means that P(AB) is close to P(A), which turns out to mean that A and B intersect very highly (have very much in common) in the probability-statistics framework and that A is almost entirely inside B, that is A is almost entirely a subset of B. This could be designated as "A is an Internal Attractor of B", and makes intuitive sense. The third type says that A and B don't intersect, and is exemplified by equa- tion (3). Since A and B don't intersect, they have nothing in common, and so such Attractors can be called External Attractors - A is an External Attractor of B. An External Attractor could represent "action at a distance," where something influences something else without a physical connection or transmission from one to the other, or it could represent one alternative influencing another, or it could just represent two non-intersecting sets/events influencing each other or one representing the other. "Action at a distance" is difficult to confirm for physical events in our Universe, although theoretically it could occur in some alternative Universe or even in some "parallel universe" if those exist. Alternative choices influencing each other is an unusual concept. We usually think that if you can choose D or E, then D doesn't influence E or vice versa - only your choice influences anything, or D or E might be influenced by your choice, or conceivably D or E could affect your choice. But for D to affect E if they are completely alternative choices (like eating or not eating, or like buying 1 breads, 2 breads, or 3 breads) which exclude each other seems strange. Still, the fact that they exclude each other means that there is some type of influence going on - even if it is "exclusion" - although there is much research to be done in this area. Osher Doctorow

FOTD 16-07-04 (First Light from Vega [7])

FOTD -- July 16, 2003 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's quickie image takes us to a midget on a filament of a larger midget lying on the x-axis of the Mandelbrot set. This larger midget is found just beyond the tip of the stem of the very large midget at -1,75. From a distance, the image reminds me of a star blazing brilliantly in the middle of a vast nothing- ness. I named it "First Light from Vega" accordingly. This star seemed appropriate, since it is bluish like the image, and passes directly overhead in the evening at this latitude at this time of year. Though the magnitude of the image demands arbitrary precision math, the magnitude lies just beyond the range of conventional math, and, aided by the x-axis symmetry, renders in only 5 minutes on my tired old P200 machine. I rated the image at a 7. Considering the less-than-three- minutes I spent on the coloring, the colors turned out surpris- ingly well. When the render time is figured in, the overall value rates 142. A muggy Wednesday brought several light showers to F.C. -- just enough to wet the grass and keep the dynamic duo's paws damp. Thursday was near perfect, and the duo made the most of it. Today looks to be near perfect again. The question is whether I will make the most of it. The next FOTD will appear in 24, 48, or 72 hours. picking colors

Missing 1600x1200 mode

I have this last week had to (yet again) reinstall Windows 98SE on my 1Ghz Athlon PC. Everything works fine except that Fractint can no longer run in 1600 x 1200 mode. My desktop runs 1600x1200 32 bit and I have been able to show that the 8bit and 16 bit modes also function at this resolution. The installation of Fractint is the one previously in use prior to the reinstallation of Windows and the fractint.cfg file for my Matrox G400 cardis is as below. Attempts to remake the fractint cfg file using Makecfg.exe now stall with an error"Reading your VESA VIEO BIOS... Int 0x10 ,ax=0x4F01 failed : ax=0xAF4F" Working on a new 3.2Ghz Athlon PC under XP home with a Radeon 9200SE (128MB) card I am also only able to use upto and including 1280 X1024 modes . The QPV file does not have any entries above 1280 x1024 and yet this card supports upto 2048 pixel graphics .Similarly the .cfg file resulting from running Makefcfg.exe does not contain entries above 1280x1024. Appended is my Stools.ini file for the G400 use.
