FOTD -- December 06, 2004 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's formula is not strictly an escape-time formula, but the type of image it draws (it draws only one image) is close enough to escape-time images to be included in the Fractint tour. We learned in high school that the graph of X^2+Y^2 is a circle, but we never learned that it could be a fractal. (At least I didn't) As today's image shows, X^2+Y^2 makes a striking fractal. All that is necessary to bring out the latent fractal is to make the journey to unity a bit difficult, as has been done in the 'unity' formula. (An interested fractalist is also a help.) The fractal is a strange one. Features that are clear on the surface vanish mysteriously as we zoom in on them. When today's image is rendered at a resolution of 640x480, there is an obvious but very narrow circle of radius 1 around the origin. At a resolution of 800x600 only a few scattered traces of this circle are visible. And when we try to zoom in on the circle, it vanishes completely. It is not only this delicate circle that vanishes when it is enlarged; nearly every feature in the interior of the circular fractal itself is unstable, almost as though the entire fractal were a moire pattern. Today's image shows the entire unity fractal rotated -135 degrees. By setting the outside to 'atan' and turning on the 'decomp' feature, I was able to divide the fractal into two contrasting semi-circles and come up with an image worthy of FOTD status. The name "Un-Unity" implies that the two halves of the image are so different as to be separate entities. The image is extremely fast, rendering in less than 6 seconds on my 7-year-old machine. Since the 'unity' formula has no parame- ters to tweak, and the fractal is unstable when it is zoomed into, I could take no credit for finding a great image. But today's FOTD is a fine rendering of the basic fractal, well worth the rating of an average 5 that I gave it. And when the hyper-fast render time is considered, the overall worth measures an astounding 5102. Of course, such numbers are meaningless. All fractals that complete in less that a minute should be considered 'instant' fractals. It was one of the best days in the past several weeks. The day was so good in fact that no special treat was needed to keep the duo happy in the evening. This morning is starting cloudy however, and it is colder. Rain is also threatening, so I doubt that the good day will be repeated. For me it will be just another workday. FOTD -- December 31, 2004 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene in the fractal world that results when various portions of Z^(-0.8) and Z^(1.4) are combined and (1/C) is added. I say the fractal world because the formula does not produce a single fractal. It produces an entire world of smaller individual fractals. Though the number of tiny fractals in today's world is infinite, there are two main Mandeloid fractals, surounded by considerable debris. Today's scene is near the point where the sprawling debris surrounding the large Mandeloid on the left bleeds into the Mandeloid on the right, which is surrounded by less fractal debris. To add a little extra sparkle to the image, I rendered it with the outside set to 'real'. The additional sparkle was enough to raise its rating to a respectable 6. When the render time of near 7-1/2 minutes is figured in, the overall worth registers an 81. The name I gave today's FOTD is "Eighteen", a name that has no relation whatsoever to the image. I chose the name because I was in an ambiguous mood at the time. But the philosophy will return, more intense than ever, in the philofractal version of tomorrow's FOTD discussion. The high temperature of 48F 9C and total lack of sun here at Fractal Central on Thursday made it a bit too chilly for the fractal duo to fully enjoy their time outdoors. They came inside in bad moods after only an hour in the yard, and demanded extra tuna, which, knowing the alternative, I gave them at once. The tuna did the trick, and they settled down side by side on the couch for a long nap. Today is starting cloudy again, but it is supposed to turn sunny and warmer by afternoon. (I'll believe it when I see it.) While waiting for the sun to appear, I'll finish the small bit of work waiting to be done, then set out for fractal land to see what lies there. FOTD -- December 30, 2004 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image rates a 6 and is named "The Pit". I gave it this name when I had a vague impression of looking down into a pit while studying the image. The rating of a 6 seems fair. The parent fractal is no single fractal at all. It is a group of 2 large Mandeloids surrounded by fractal debris filled with baby M-sets. Today's scene is located in the East Valley of the large Mandeloid on the right. The rating of a nominal 6 and the render time of just under 11 minutes gives the image an overall worth of 55. Rendering may be avoided by downloading the completed GIF file from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The philosophy of the day appears in the philofractal version of this discussion. Warm sun and a temperature of 57F 14C made conditions near perfect for the fractal duo on Wednesday. The high point of their outing came when Tippy caught a late cricket on the porch and brought it to the door to show what he had done, while Thomas watched with little interest. Today is starting warm again, but the sun is lacking. We shall have to wait to see how the day goes for the duo. For me it looks like the usual routine of real work before fractal fun. FOTD -- December 29, 2004 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: To find today's image I checked the Z^(1.98)+C Mandeloid 3.1 levels up the logarithmic spiral. The parent fractal is a distorted Mandelbrot set with numerous splits along the negative real axis. Today's scene is located in a distorted valley of a large bud on the northwest shoreline of the main bay. For some reason now forgotten, I named the extremely busy image "Verdancy". The name is not really deserved, as the image has little resemblance to a lush forest. In fact, it is such a mish-mash of assorted and not-always-harmonious colors that I could rate it at only a 4. The not-exactly-fast render time of over 17 minutes raises this to a humble 23. But all is not lost, for the image has been pre-rendered and posted on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> from where it may safely be downloaded. <The philosophical part of this discussion has been omitted from the Fractint version, but it appears in the philofractal version.> Tuesday was chilly here at Fractal Central, but not as chilly as Monday had been. The high temperature of 36F 2C was just warm enough for the fractal duo to venture off the porch and spend over an hour checking the holly thicket. When they found nothing out of order, they returned inside to enjoy their treat of tuna. Today is starting notably milder. It should be a fine day for the duo. I continue to be asked if and when pictures of the dynamic duo of fractal cats will be posted. The problem is that my 25-year- old Pentax SLR film camera has stopped working and I have not found an opportunity, nor a good-enough reason, to purchase and learn to operate one of the 'new-fangled' electronic cameras. But one of these days I will do so, and the cats' pictures will be available for all the world to see. For me it looks like work for most of the day, then a trip to the land of fractals, where I will linger awhile to ponder deep philosophical things not necessarily designed to make people feel good. Getting Microsoft Visual Basic runtime DLLs for Paste 'n' Go Utility

Clicking on the web address for getting the Microsoft Visual Basic runtime DLLs does not work. This bud has undergone some curious distortions, with major discontinuities and several broad disconnected filaments shooting off in various directions." I wanted to see what he was describing so I repeatedly zoomed his fractal out until the full Mandelbrot-like shape was on the screen. I rotated the figure to better fit the screen and rotated the color map to suit my taste. The result is a pleasing variation of the original Mandelbrot set. The corresponding .par file is included below. I use Robin Bussell's free Paste 'n' Go utility to quickly launch the rendering of many of Jim's Fractals of The Day. Paste 'n' Go is a Windows(tm) program that, with one click, puts the contents of the Windows clipboard into a .par file and launches Fractint pointing to that file. It can even remove the "3D"s after equals signs with a single push of a button when you find them in certain older .par files. The program has additional useful features. I avoided using parameter and formula files with Fractint for a long time. When I got Robin's Paste 'n' Go program several years ago, these files became so easy to use I found that I was using them quite often. Note that if you put the text frm: in front of the formula file (as Jim does) that you can include the formula *inside* the .par file following the .par information. Having these four characters present allows you to avoid the additional step of separately pasting the formula into Paste 'n' Go's 'Formula Text' window. http://web.ukonline.co.uk/robin.b2/pastengo.htm has a screenshot, description of usage and download link for Paste 'n' Go. FOTD -- December 28, 2004 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The FOTD returns with a burst of undersea glory! Today's 7-rated image is a scene in the Z^(2.02)+C fractal at a location 77 turns up the abstraction I call the logarithmic hyperspiral. At this lofty level the basic Mandelbrot shape has rotated 90 degrees, so that its main bud faces north. This bud has undergone some curious distortions, with major discontinuities and several broad disconnected filaments shooting off in various directions. Today's scene is located near the tip of one of these broad filaments. To bring some extra life to the image, I tried the various 'outside' options. With the proximity set at 3, the 'fmod' option seemed to work best, so that is what I used. Something about the image reminds me of a bed of shellfish, so I named it "Seashore Seashells" With its render time of 3+ minutes and its rating of 7, today's image has an overall worth of 211. However, they do appear in the philofractal version.> Chilly weather over the holiday weekend here at Fractal Central kept the cats' outdoor time limited to under an hour each day, but their moods remained surprisingly good considering the poor conditions. Today is again starting sunny and very cold, with a temperature of 18F -8C. It looks like a repeat. The weather may repeat, but fractals never repeat. The next one will appear right here in 24 hours.
