FOTD -- November 03, 2004 (Rating 6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
After being up almost all night watching election returns, I
find myself a bit logy this morning, but still with enough
energy to post the traditional FOTD. (Yes, the FOTD can almost
be called traditional. In April of 1997 when I posted the
first FOTD, if anyone had told me that I would still be as
enthusiastic in November of 2004, 7-1/2 years later, I would
have laughed.)
Today, we continue our tour of the Fractint formulas. Moving
past an interesting series of orbit-type formulas, we reach the
first of the 'Magnet'-type formulas. I know little about these
formulas, though it appears they were derived from the behavior
of magnetic materials rather than being written for the purpose
of creating fractals. I would assume they only coincidentally
create interesting fractals.
I created today's fractal image using the magnet1j formula.
This formula is quite complex, and I have no idea of what it
tells us about magnetic material, but it makes attractive
fractals, one of which appears as today's FOTD.
I named the image "Ruby-Red" for its strong ruby-colored
elements, though its most impressive feature may be the green,
filled-in midget Julia set at the center. Other Julia sets of a
similar shape are scattered throughout the image. Curiously,
these other sets are open on the inside.
To add interest to an otherwise routine image, I rendered it
with the outside set to 'real'. It is this option that causes
the battlement shape so obvious in the bands in the ruby areas.
I rated the image at a 6, perhaps a bit liberally. The render
time is a fast 2-1/3 minutes, which gives an overall worth of
253. The fastest way of all to see the action of the magnetic
materials is to download the completed GIF file from the FOTD
web site at:

The weather turned surprisingly pleasant here at Fractal Central
on Tuesday. The dynamic fractal cats had a great day in the
yard, where they slept early and slept often. The temperature
of 70F 21C was perfect. Today is starting with more clouds, but
a little blue sky is showing. Only time will tell what kind of
day the duo will have.
For me, it will be another average day. The commercial work is
still caught up, meaning the fractals will continue coming on
schedule. The next one will arrive in 24 hours. Until then,
take care, and keep your chin up.

FOTD -- November 02, 2004 (Rating 5)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's fractal was calculated by the next formula in line, the
'lambdafn' formula, which is another formula that one must
become familiar with before its maximum potential can be
realized. I worked with the formula less than an hour, so it is
questionable whether the formula's maximum potential actually
has been realized in today's image. My opinion is that nothing
out of the ordinary has been achieved, and I rated the image at
at an average 5 accordingly. The render time of 22 seconds
raises the overall worth to a shocking 1351.
The image looks exactly like the sun as seen through a fractal
desert sandstorm, and that is what I named it. The 'recip'
function is responsible for the grittiness that fills the frame,
though I am responsible for the wan color of the sun feebly
shining through the dust and sand in the upper left corner.
The swirling sand clouds are truly fractal. This airborne sand
maintains its totally random appearance, with occasional false
hints of a pattern, all the way down to the limit of resolution.
This might be the actual nature of the formula or it might be
due to a quirk in the math routine. Whatever it is, the result
is striking enough to earn the status of FOTD for today.
To see the sandstorm, put on your goggles and run the included
parameter file. It runs in a lightning-fast 22 seconds. Or
forget the goggles and download the completed GIF image from the
FOTD web site at:

Monday was another near-perfect day here at Fractal Central,
with lots of sun and an afternoon temperature of 66F 19C. The
cat duo enjoyed it to the fullest, and when the time arrived to
return, they came in without complaint to enjoy their supper of
tuna and turkey. Today is again starting sunny, but rain is in
the forecast. Hopefully, the rain will hold off until the duo
has enjoyed another pleasant day in the fractal yard.
For me it looks like another day -- vote, work, then on to the
fractals. The best fractal I find will appear as tomorrow's
FOTD. Until then, take care, and regardless of the outcome, we
will all win.

FOTD -- November 01, 2004 (Rating 7)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
The days when I received 3 or 4-hundred spam e-mails a day have
been gone for a while. I have been using Earthlink's spam-
blocker for about a year. But some of the stuff (10 to 20 per
day) still gets through, and sometimes this trickle is good for
a laugh. I couldn't help but laughing this morning when I saw a
letter with a subject line that told me something I had never
imagined. The line read: 'You can live and work in the USA'.
When I stopped laughing, I wondered why anyone would want to
come to a country where the politicians who run it are forever
telling us how bad the conditions are.
Luckily, today's fractal is a lot better than the state of the
USA. It rates a 7. This combines with the render time of well
under three minutes to give an overall worth of 259. I named
the picture "Lambda Land". Why not? It certainly is a scene in
the land of Lambda.
The image was created by Fractint's lambda(fn||fn) formula.
This formula is tricky. It is rather hard to get it to do
interesting things, but as today's image shows, it has great
potential. I had worked with it for nearly an hour, trying
different functions and shift values, and had found nothing even
close to being good enough for a FOTD. Then, with the functions
set to atanh/sin, and a mostly blank screen before me, I set the
inside fill to bof61 and actually lowered the maxiter. I fin-
ished the image by setting the small area of 'outside' stuff to
'tdis'. The result is today's image with its cheerio-like rings
and flashy colors.
Almost all of the image consists of 'inside' stuff. Most of the
other inside fills work nearly as well with this strange image
that tries to hide its potential. The color palette could
perhaps use a bit more green, but I enjoy reds, blues, and
purples. The orangish highlights add just enough interest to
raise the image to its rating of 7.

Sunday turned into the best day in several weeks here at Fractal
Central. The warm sun and temperature of 77F 25C were just what
the fractal cats needed to chase away the cat blues. They spent
the entire afternoon in the yard, mostly sitting and watching,
but leaping up to chase an occasional falling leaf. The day
ended with the duo enjoying their evening meal. This morning is
starting with sun and cooler temperatures -- conditions that can
be found acceptable by dignified fractal cats.
My day was not quite as good as the cats'. The trick-or-treat
goblins were quite active around sundown, but all-in-all it was
a satisfactory day. Today it's back to work and then back to
fractals, the next of which will appear in 24 hours. Until
then, take care, and don't drown in the functions.
