FOTD -- October 14, 2004 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal image, which was created by the fn(z)+fn(pix) formula, is named "Jet Action". A quick glance at the image will reveal the reason for the name. Rarely have I seen such an energetic outburst from such a picayune fractal object. The fn(z)+fn(pix) formula creates an immense variety of fractals, more than any one person could hope to become familiar with in a month, much less one day. When I opened the formula, I set the two functions to 'sqr' and 'ident', which draws a half-sized version of the familiar Mandelbrot set. Then I set the real(p1) parameter to -1, and started tweaking the functions to see what would happen. When I noticed that the functions 'recip' 'sqr' draw a mostly empty screen consisting of 'inside' stuff, I brought the inside stuff to life with the inside=bof61 option. The result is today's image. The effect of two jets of pure energy shooting out from the center of some hyperenergetic galaxy is totally a product of the coloring, which took longer to work out than the image takes to render. Of course, that does not imply that an extraordinary amount of time was spent in coloring the image, since the render time is a fast-as-light 8-1/2 seconds, which results in an absolutely ridiculous absolute worth of 4317 when the rating of 6 is figured in. Perhaps the most interesting part of the image lies in the jets, where the boundaries have broken down into chaos that produces many varieties of interference patterns as it is magnified. This would appear to indicate that some order exists beyond the resolution limit, but if so, it is totally beyond reach. All this jet action may be seen in living color by running the included parameter file, or, if your state-of-the-art machine is Fractint-challenged, by downloading the finished GIF image from the FOTD web site watched over by Paul Lee at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Lots of clouds and a temperature of 61F 16C kept the fractal cats subdued most all day Wednesday. Luckily, the rain held off long enough for the duo to enjoy a brief half hour in the yard. Today looks to be similar. It remains to be seen how the duo will adjust. With the commercial work still caught up, I'll adjust to what- ever happens with no trouble. And who knows -- tomorrow might be the day I finally find a fractal that rates a 10. Fractint Question

Is there any way to get my nVidia video adaptor to let me use a fractint video setting higher than 320x200 ? I recently upgraded the motherboard, processor and ram; the old board had AGP 8mb and I could use up to "SF 9" in fractint. Thanks. Michael Miller damienmj(a)earthlink.net

FOTD 13-10-04 (Circle Limit [6])

FOTD -- October 13, 2004 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal is named "Circle-Limit". And why not? The formula that drew it is named 'escher_julia', and Escher drew several similar pictures which he named 'Circle Limit'. The 'escher_julia' formula draws circles filled with a variety of Julia-set parts. For today's image I chose a point near Seahorse Valley of the Mandelbrot set as the starting para- meters. These parameters only partly fill the circle with 'outside' features. Much of what appears inside the circle is 'inside' stuff. This presents no problem. I rendered the image with the inside set to 'bof61', which gives a nice shaded back- ground to the 'outside' features inside the circle. The image is a kind of graphic representation of a space of negative curvature, in which there is more space out there than would seem possible. In such a space, things appear smaller than their distance would indicate. If our universe has such a curvature, it will expand forever until it dies a slow death from increasing entropy. At least that is the old idea. But we are currently wrestling with all kinds of new forces and new ideas about the fate of the universe, and I'm not sure what its fate is now theorized to be. And even if we do determine its fate, how do we know that the universe will actually do what we theorize it must? It's all simply an interesting intellectual exercise. Today's image is a little above the average run of FOTD images, and earned an honest 6. Its speedy render time of 25 seconds results in an overall value of a huge 1395. They took all the porch sun they could get. The sun is dropping lower, already skimming the tops of the holly trees even at midday, and in a week or so, the porch will be shaded all day. This morning I see clouds already moving in. With clouds and occasional rain expected for the rest of the week, the cats will likely be disappointed. With the today's fractal rating above average, I feel reasonably satisfied, but far better things should be possible, so I'll try again tomorrow on another formula. FOTD -- October 12, 2004 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: To get a fair assessment of the many formulas in Fractint, it would be necessary to spend at least a month with each one, and not the mere hour or so that I am now spending. But even an hour can give a basic idea of what a formula has to offer, and besides, if I were to spend a month with each formula, it would be quite a few years before I finished the Fractint tour. Today's image takes us to the complexnewton formula. This formula works the same as the complexbasin formula that created yesterday's image, but instead of coloring the points according to which root they converge on, today's formula colors the points according to how many iterations it takes for the points to reach the root. Since we are searching for an imaginary root in today's image, we find an infinity of complex solutions waiting for us, arranged in a truly fractal pattern. Regardless of how deep we search, there are always an infinity of similar smaller basins and their roots ahead of us. Since the process is unending and the detail appears to change little, I stopped my search at a relatively shallow depth when I found today's scene. Actually, there is nothing unusual about today's scene. With small variations, the entire parent fractal, which is infinite in size, looks the same as the tiny part visible in today's image. This parent very graphically displays the infinite multi-dimensional spiral that results because of the multi-valued functions used in the calculation. When the time arrived to give my latest creation a name, I studied the image for nearly 10 minutes. Then, for some reason, I started imagining lobsters in the image. I named the picture "Vision of Lobsters". Thanks to its brilliant coloring, the image is rated higher than the recent ones. I decided on a rating of 6, which the render time of 1 minute and 23 seconds raises to an absolute value of a respectable 429. Skipping over the diffusion fractal type, which draws fractal trees, and the dynamic type, which draws diamonds, tomorrow's image will explore the 'escher' fractal, which does strange things with Julia sets. Exactly how strange these things are will have to wait until tomorrow to be determined. FOTD 11-10-04 (The Right Root [5])

FOTD -- October 11, 2004 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The Newton formulas are not really escape-time formulas, but they work in much the same way. Today's image was created by the complexbasin Newton formula. This formula uses Newton's method of finding roots, and colors the points according to which complex root they converge on. In the Newton's fractals, much of the interest lies where areas of different colors appear to touch. The different colors do not actually touch however, they merely exist close to each other. At every color boundary a fractal pattern exists that separates the colors. This pattern exists even at the smallest scales. Since I have done very little exploration in the Newton's formulas, I am not familiar with the things they can do. They certainly can do more than I have done with today's image, where I have used negative and imaginary parameters, and rendered it with the outside set to 'fmod'. Even the little bit I have done rates a 5 however. Maybe when my tour of the built-in Fractint formulas is finished, I will return to the Newton's formulas for further exploration. I can see by the sharp cut in the image that it is but one level of an infinite spiral, much like the branch- cut fractals I often work with, though in this case, it appears that the unseen levels would appear similar. All things considered, I rated the image at a 5. I named it "The Right Root" for no particular reason. Due to the render time of only 19 seconds, the rating of 5 leaps to an incredible and grossly inflated 1534. They would have been perfectly happy if we had not gone out in the afternoon and brought them inside. But half a perfect day is better than no perfect day, and when we returned in the evening, they ran to greet us as eagerly as ever. Today is starting almost perfect. Only a chilly tempera- ture of 48F 9C is keeping it from being absolutely perfect. For me, being caught up in the commercial work leaves that much more time for fractal work. Zoom into Jim's FOTD 'Twinship' looking for the *start* of the negative real axis split

############################################################ Jim Muth's October 10, 2004 FOTD, 'Twinship' "...splits along [the Mandelbrot set's] negative real axis." "How does the set behave where the split 'begins'?" was the question that immediately came to mind. So I did some zooms into his FOTD where that seemed to occur. Here is the result of that exploration. The color map has been rotated to bring out both the linear and the curved tendril shapes in the image. Where the split in the the Mandelbrot set's negative real axis happens is shown pretty clearly. There happen to be no substantial miniature Mandelbrot sets at this particular magnification, but that allows the other elements of the fractal to be the central features of the image. In an effort to entice you into creating this quickly- drawn fractal I will give a rough description. The overall figure is somewhat dark and bloody, with malevolent medusa-like tendrils dominating the image. FOTD -- October 10, 2004 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: For today's fractal we turn to the cmplxmarksmand formula of Fractint. By adding an exponent to C, this formula is capable of doing some very rude things to the classic Mandelbrot set, from tearing it apart to turning it inside out. But for today's fractal we have gone easy on the set, merely giving it a slight split along its negative real axis. Though the cmplxmarksmand formula can draw some very curious variations of the M-set, they are still variations of the same set. The interesting fractals are all on the surface. Except along the line where the fractal splits, the depths of the fractals created by this formula are identical to those of the M-set itself. To create today's image, I have taken a midget on a filament extending from a sub-bud on the south shore of the largest bud of the M-set and caught it at the point where both it and its twin on the north shore have just emerged from limbo and are just splitting apart. FOTD -- October 06, 2004 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal image, created by the barnsleym1 formula, resembles little more than a texture. In fact, it is hardly a texture. The image could more accurately be described as resembling a patch of pollution floating on the surface of a pond, or even something unmentionable. I named the image "Scrap Fractal" during a moment of kindness. One thing the image has going for it is the fact that I know of no other formula that could produce such chaotic chaos. Of course, I say this while having yet to examine the other two Barnsley Mandelbrot formulas, so I cannot state it as a fact. The default image drawn by the barnsleym1 formula has XY-axis symmetry, but no signs of midgets. Changing the starting point from 0,0 results in fractals without symmetry, which could be considered more interesting, but the inner details remain pretty much the same. None of the starting points I tried gave even a hint of a Mandelbrot midget. If such midgets can be created by this formula, they have so far totally eluded me. When coloring the scene I tried the sky-blue-background effect. No coloring can raise a pile of scrap to a jewel, but the sky- blue emphasized the forces working in the debris and raised the rating from a shameful 3 to a below-average 4. The render time is once again very fast. All the Barnsley formulas are fast. Today's render time of 1 minute and 50.78 seconds lets the overall value of the image come in at a whopping 216, a high enough value to make running the included parameter file practical. The completed image is or soon will be available for viewing on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> I found only a few minutes to browse the Sep-Oct issue of 'Skeptical Inquirer' magazine yesterday, but one thing I did notice was an unfavorable (no surprise) review of the cult-like movie 'What the Bleep do we Know?'. The review is actually more of an attack on the film's producers, who are portrayed as new- age kooks, than a refutation of its content, which apparently connects quantum mechanics with mysticism. This leads me to take the film more seriously. If the film's content were total kookiness, CSICOP, which publishes S.I. magazine, would have pointed out its scientific errors, and would not have needed to attack the character of its producers. Actually, the more I read this magazine, which sometimes seems almost desperate in its denial of the paranormal, the more I become convinced that precognition is not the only paranormal thing that really does exist. I must search to see if the film has a web site. Despite the temperature of only 59F 15C and chilly winds here at Fractal Central on Tuesday, the duo of cats had a pleasant day. Thomas actually tried to make friends with the new guy on the block -- a grey-and-white cat from three doors down the hill -- but the other cat sneaked off. Tippy watched the lack of action with dis-interest. Today is starting quite chilly, but the wind has abated and the sun is bright. I expect a warmer afternoon. For me the work is still light, which promises as good a fractal as I can find in the second Barnsley Mandelbrot formula. That image will appear in 24 hours. It well might have open areas of various shapes hidden somewhere in it, and some of these open areas may resemble Mandelbrot midgets, but if so, the resemblance is coincidental. I, like you, am always on the lookout for miniature Mandelbrot sets. A couple of zooms into the center of symmetry of you FOTD and elsewhere did not bring to light anything that I thought might lead to a mini Mandelbrot set. I found more and more spirals and chaotic areas rendered at slower and slower speeds. Can you confirm that this FOTD is not likely to have any Mandelbrot sets hidden in it? <---<< I am trying to slowly build my ability to recognize areas in fractals that have potential for interesting structures in them -- and I am asking if you agree with my conjecture above.
