FOTD -- September 14, 2003 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I am constantly fascinated by the concept of the fourth spatial dimension. Even though four-dimensional space and objects are not visual things, I want to know what a 4-D object looks like when seen all together at a single moment, and not as a 3-D object changing shape over a period of time. I want to see an object with a three-dimensional surface. (The very idea seems absurd.) I want to see an entire plane of a hypersphere remain fixed in position, with every point rotating on itself as the hypersphere rotates. I want to see a hyper- sphere in a state of double rotation, where only the single point at the center remains fixed, while all other points trace out the circular spirals known as surfaces of double revolution. I want to look at the night sky and see not a flat surface with stars scattered over it, but a solid three-dimensional surface with stars embedded all through it. I want to be on the ocean and see the sphere of the horizon surrounding me in all direc- tions including the directions we would call up and down. And finally, I want to see the Z^2+C Julibrot in its full 4-D glory, with its arms shooting off to infinity. There are these things and so much more that I would like to see, but alas, I never will see them, for my visual perception is limited to three dimensions. I know that 4-D objects are possible because I can create them at will in my computer and examine any section I choose. As an example, I have created for today's FOTD the 4-D object known as Seahorse Valley. As I said, Seahorse Valley is a four-dimensional object, and as such can be examined from many impossible-to-visualize angles, one of which is today's image. The outer border of today's fractal is in the shape of the familiar Julia set with a C-value of -0.75,0. This is not unexpected, since the view is turned only one degree from the Julia orientation toward the Oblate orientation. But the interior of the fractal is filled with strange features unseen in either Mandelbrot or Julia sets. This stuff filling the interior of the fractal is an entirely new view of Seahorse Valley. I named the image "The Whole Seahorse" because it shows more of the Valley than can ever be seen in the M-set alone. The narrow straight line cutting down the center of the outer fractal is actually a side view of the two branches of Seahorse Valley coming together. The extreme maxiter of 1,500,000 is needed to close the gap between the two branches because, from this angle, the branches of the valley have been magnified 57 times. The orbits of the points in this area are so close to periodic that the periodicity checking must be turned off to avoid false calculation terminations. Combined with the extreme maxiter of many of the parts of the image, this results in a very slow image, which takes just under an hour to render on my machine. Considering the slowness of the image and the fact that I have posted several similar images in the past, I could rate today's image no higher than an average 5. But it is still an interes- ting image with coloring that is not bad, and the completed GIF image will be ready for download from the FOTD web sites within the hour. They did a lot of yelling and tail thrashing under the dining room table. A few blows were thrown, but no damage was done, and the dynamic duo ended the day eating tuna and sulking at each other. Had it not been for the excitement among the duo, the day would have been uneventful. Today is starting sunnier, but lots of clouds are around and there is still a chance of rain. Hi Gerald, Yes, I'm the Anthony Hanmer who posted some L-systems a long while ago. Thank you for answering my questions. Actually, of the 4 limitations I mentioned, the ones concerning maximum number of entries in a single .ifs or .ls file are the least important for me. I CAN always split up large files into smaller ones, and this is in fact what I have already done, so no worries. I was more hoping to have the other 2 limits removed - those on LS string length (160 characters) and IFS object number (32). But again, these are not limits which really threaten or even prevent my main work - at the moment. However, if Fractint is moving out of its format into somthing less restricted in the future, I ask that all 4 of these limitations be remembered and removed - IF that is possible. If not, life goes on and it's STILL the best fractal programme around! FOTD -- September 12, 2003 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today is starting on an up note: there were less than 100 spam e-mails in my emailbox when I checked a while ago. But at the same time, there is a down note. I have not yet received that apology from the administrator, if one exists, of the fracpro- grammers list that I am waiting for before I re-subscribe. No matter, there is no noticeable decrease in the number of letters I am receiving from the list. More ominously, I am starting to receive returned mail from the Fractint list that I never sent out. Since I have no sneaky viruses or worms in my system that could send out e-mail without my knowledge, and I never use the programs that get infected by these critters, we'll see where this 'returned mail' leads. Now on to the fractal for today. Today's image is named "Strawberry Fields" not because I like the music of the Beatles, which I rather do, but because the phrase simply came into my head while I studied the image in search of a name. I guess the pinkish terraces inspired the name. The parent fractal is a distorted Mandeloid with no East Valley, lying in the proper orientation, with X-axis symmetry. Unlike the classic M-set however, the parts of this Mandeloid are not connected, and it is surrounded by a cloud of tiny isolated midgets, every one of which, with the exception of its mirror image, is different. The formula subtracts Z^2 from lesser portions of Z^4, Z^6, and Z^8. This combination produces a fractal with three critical points, one of which is located at Z=0,0. The remaining two critical points, around Z=+-0.77, produce nearly but not exactly identical Mandeloids, which might hold some interesting scenes and might be worth investigation. The largest satellite midget of today's parent fractal is located on the negative X-axis. Curiously, this midget is rotated 180 degrees, so that its East Valley is on its west side. Today's scene is found near a larger midget in the interior of the north branch of the Seahorse Valley of the very large satellite midget. My standard rendering method, where the outside=iter, produces a fair enough image, but the outside=tdis option that I used does a little better. When rating the image, I felt a bit more satisfied with it than usual, and gave it a rating of a 6. The parameter file's render time of 14-1/2 minutes is slow. Downloading the completed image from one of the FOTD web sites is fast. Perhaps the rain that is forecast for later this afternoon and over the week-end will give them reason to appreciate days such as yesterday. I have been experimenting much with IFS and L-system types in Fractint - though I'm afraid my findings are not yet ready for release. There are several limitations I have come up against, and I wonder if they might be removed in the next release of Fractint - I think they are all no longer necessary with the general speed and power of computers nowadays: In both IFS and L-system types, a ceiling on the number of entries allowed in their respective files (*.ifs and *.ls) - 2000 and 1000 items respectively, if memory serves; In IFS types, a limit of 32 pieces making a specified IFS; In L-system types, a limit of 160 characters per line. Might these constraints please be removed? FOTD -- September 11, 2003 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I feel strangely down this morning, and I don't know why. True, it's the second anniversary of 9-11-01, and the TV is filled with memorial ceremonies, but I have known the day was coming for a long time. Then there's the work, which has been heavier than usual over the past few weeks, cutting into my fractal exploration time. But more work means more income, so that's not really cause for the blues. Or maybe it's a touch of clinical depression, some brain chemicals not doing what they should. (As cognitive scientists tell us, emotions are caused by chemical activity in the brain.) Could it be sadness because summer is nearly over? I doubt it, since Autumn is one of my favorite times of year. Maybe it's a touch of mid-life crisis, the realization that the time of life has arrived when I must stop asking 'what will I do with my life' and start asking 'what did I do with my life'. But I have never been concerned with growing older -- it happens to everyone. Or could it simply be boredom, my reaction to things going well for a change, and the lack of excitement this smoothness implies? Most likely it's a combination of all of these. Whatever it is, I'll get over it. Today's image is part of the fractal that results when 6 parts of Z^(-1.6) are mixed with Z^(-6.1) before (1/C) is added. This parent fractal is beyond description. When studying today's image, which is located in a valley of its parent, I thought of how good a sieve it would make. I named the image "The Fractal Sieve". I gave little thought to its worth. The rating of an average 5 was chosen because it cannot be too far from the rating I would have chosen if I had given it more thought. The render time of 22 minutes is too slow for such a generic image. FOTD 10-09-03 (Mystic Mandel Vision [5])

FOTD -- September 10, 2003 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: It appears the booming design business is having an effect on the quality of the FOTD. For about two weeks I have been unusually busy, and the FOTD fractals have suffered from a lack of attention. I'm not sure whether this is good news or bad, but I would rather concern myself about a less-than-great FOTD than a lack of money. The only thing I am certain of is that the FOTD will continue appearing almost every day for the foreseeable future. Today's image of a midget surrounded by a brightly glowing aura was created by mixing various portions of Z^2, Z^3, Z^4 and Z^5. I named it "Mystic Mandel Vision" because it reminds me of something a meditating mystic with an interest in fractals might see in his mind while he meditates. This particular mystic vision is of only average quality, and it rates only an average 5. It deserves nothing more. Mystical visions are true, though they are not real in the generally accepted sense of the word. The same is true of fractals. Much can be learned through mystical visions; much can be learned through fractals. Much of what is learned through both means has no apparent practical value. Today's image requires 27 minutes to render on my tired machine, which is almost 10 years old and still humming. FOTD -- September 08, 2003 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The later than usual FOTD is a result of a heavier than usual work load earlier today. Sometimes in life the unexpected happens. This is true not only in the fields of fractals, relativity and Q.M., but in ordinary chemistry as well. I still remember the day in high-school physics lab when the instructor produced a sealed tube contain- ing a clear liquid. (I don't think it was water. It might have been CO-2.) He then asked the class what they thought would happen when he heated the tube. Most said that the liquid would boil away. Remembering that increasing the pressure raises the boiling point, I said that the amount of liquid in the tube would grow smaller, evaporating away without boiling until the last drop evaporated from the bottom of the tube. What actually happened surprised even me. As the instructor heated the tube, the surface of the liquid filling the lower part of the tube soon grew vague. It became blurred and wavy. The whole tube looked like it held liquids of two different densities, which were mixing together. And then the optical effects were gone. The instructor said the tube was now filled with only high-pressure gas. Neither I nor anyone else in the class had expected this to happen. The instructor had just demonstrated the critical temperature and pressure of whatever liquid was in the tube, the temperature above which the substance would be in the form of gas regardless of the pressure applied to it. Today's fractal demonstrates what happens when 0.2 part of Z^3 is subtracted from Z^2. The resulting M-set has strange things happening along the X-axis east of East Valley. Today's image lies in a shallow spiral rather deep in East Valley. I once again colored the outside with the 'fmod' option, and named the image "Trying Again". It's better than yesterday's effort, but still nothing to brag about. The rating of 6 is appropriate. The render time of 54 minutes however is excessive for such an image. The sunny skies and temperature of 81F 27C could not possibly be bettered. Cats that behave like angels for an entire day cannot be bettered either. Days like this come only once or twice a year, and we made the most of it while it lasted. Except for more clouds, today is again almost perfect. Could three perfect days in a row be possible?
