Fractint does not directly output to animation, however, it is possible to write scripts that run fractint to create a series of images which can then be compiled to AVI, MPEG, WMV etc. See if any posted on http://www.sonic.net/~jot/ufvp.html can be of use to you. FOTD -- June 20, 2003 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: When a discontinuous function is iterated, a discontinuous fractal results. Most of the FOTD fractals that are generated by the MandelbrotMix4 (or 2) formula are discontinuous, and indeed, the discontinuities often create the image. Today's image however is continuous. It combines 0.3 parts of Z^(-2) with 0.3 negative parts of Z^4 before it adds (1/C). The resulting parent fractal is an oversized area of chaos, rotated 45 degrees, which needs two outzooms before it totally fits on the screen. Near the center are two symmetrical and completely outrageous mutant Mandeloids, with no relation at all to the proper Mandel shape. But these Mandeloids have no discontinui- ties, and that alone makes them interesting. Today's scene is located rather deep in one of the less-likely valleys of the eastern Mandeloid. (In this Mandel-figure, all valleys are unlikely.) One of my taken-for-granted midgets is located as usual at the center, though it is too small to occupy more than a few pixels. But the midget is not the center of attention. That honor goes to the elements that fill the image, and delineate a kind of cogwheel. These elements are almost totally disconnected, but they are unbroken. Not a single discontinuity mars the wholeness of the image. This is how the fractals with fractional negative exponents would appear if a way could be found to eliminate the discontinuities, a task that is impossible but still fun to speculate about. I named today's image "Pure Wholeness" because that's what it is. Too bad I could rate it no higher than a 6, but even a 6 is at least slightly above average. Running the parameter file, with its render time of almost 9 minutes, is one way of admiring the wholeness of today's image. If I get the routine work done early enough, and if the rain does hold off, it might turn out to be another good day for both cats and humans. But to finish I must start, so until the next FOTD in 24 hours, take care, and study them as we might, we will never understand all there is to know about fractals. FOTD -- June 15, 2003 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: A day of cleaning up after the big storm, which dropped 6-1/2 inches or 16-1/2 centimeters of rain on Fractal Central in under one hour, left but little time for fractal diversion. But I did find a few spare moments, and in those moments, today's FOTD is what I found. It rates only a 4, and the render time is a dragging 20 minutes, so it is not the best value of all time. But it is worth at least a quick download. I named the image "Fractal Peaches" for reasons I have already forgotten. The formula takes Z^3 and adds 1/100 part of Z^(-99) before adding the final (1/C). The resulting parent fractal is a grossly enlarged Mandeloid rotated 180 degrees and surrounded by extended fields of chaos. Today's scene in located in the East (or in this case, the West) Valley of the parent. FOTD -- June 18, 2003 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is another scene in the East Valley area of the parent fractal of yesterday's image. Many of the same elements are there, but with the outside being rendered with the 'fmod' option, today's image is different enough to stand on its own merits. Today's rating of 6 is a big come-down from yesterday's perhaps- overblown rating of 9. It is still worth a look however. The colors, which are not nearly as finely tuned, still get the point across. When I studied the image, searching for a name, I had the impression of a Mandelbrot set being dropped into a body of colored liquid, creating a huge splash. What could I possibly have named the image other than "Ker-splash"? Curiously, if the bailout radius of today's image is raised to 10^100, the image evaporates, leaving a blank screen of all- inside points. Then, if the 'fmod' inside-fill option is applied to the blank image and the proximity is kept at 0.9, today's image will re-appear, the only difference being that instead of rendering in 13 minutes, it now takes an hour to render, and the inside of the midget now contains detail. The sprinkles that began at 1pm turned into a steady rain by 6pm. The temperature reached 66F 19C, but what good is a pleasant temperature when rain is falling? The dynamic duo thought it was no good at all, and quickly turned sulky, demanding a treat of tuna before resuming their good spirits. Since this morning is cloudy with more rain promised, I had best stock up on the tuna. "CONJAG8" BUG recovery

Hello fractitioners! I gather from postings by Sylvie Gallet and Tim Wegner that the Fracint development team is aware of this problem. I've looked long and hard at CONJAG8 as it affects MandelbrotMix4, and I believe there is no cause for alarm, the side-effects of CONJAG8 are simply that you get a totally accurate image of the reflection of your target window. I wouldn't classify this as an artifact - the detail of the image is unaffected, only its real window. Any images you have now involving MandelbrotMix4 (and its siblings) will easily be reproduced by reflecting the corners vertically, and optionally rotating the image by 180 degrees. A simple text editor macro or program could make thse changes to batches of parameter sets using the affected formulae. >From a mathematical viewpoint, this sort of error is not likely to cause widespread artifacts. Many fractals are symmetric about the imaginary axis anyway, and your original image might simply be inverted. Getting the imaginary sign wrong doesn't affect magnitudes, which are the most common form of escape conditions. The problem with accidental reflections only becomes a nuisance if the image is not symmetric about the Y axis. Of course it is possible that we will find real artifacts in some formulae. I think they'll be quite rare, but I actually hope I find some, because that might mean finding a "lost twin" for some interesting image, and who knows what that twin is going to look like! Meanwhile, the best way to look for possibly affected formulae is to run comparison tests on a few sample images for any given formula. People can use UF or CPro, and I have my own Fractint engine emulator that I can run in debug mode, which makes it easy for me to to run a "health check" on any formula people care to nominate. FOTD -- June 19, 2003 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: In the northern hemisphere the atmosphere turns counter- clockwise as it is drawn into a cyclone and clockwise as it is pushed from an anticyclone. In the southern hemisphere exactly the opposite is true. But Fractal Central is located in the northern hemisphere, and since the arms of today's spiral image are moving inward in a counter-clockwise direction and curving to the left as they go, the image can only be called "Cyclonic Circulation". When the atmosphere curves to the left in the northern hemisphere, it causes low-level convergence, which forces the air upward and squeezes any available moisture from it. We have had a lot of convergence at Fractal Central over the past two months, where only 2 of the past 60 days have been clear. People are joking that the farmers prayed for rain all last year, and their prayers are being answered all this year. Now the farmers are praying for dry weather so they can work their fields. Worried about next year, my advice is for them to make their prayers more specific. On a more fractal note, the formula of today's image mixes 1.2 negative portions of Z^(1.4) with 0.3 parts of Z^(-0.8) and adds (1/C). It was calculated by the MandelbrotMix2 formula, which is identical to the MandelbrotMix4 formula, except that it includes the ability to change the automatically calculated value of initial Z. It's a rather lively image, enhanced by a brilliant palette of colors. With other color palettes, the image actually reminds me of rows of shark's teeth, but a man-eating name would give a wrong impression, so I chose the palette that reminds me of a cyclone, and rated the image at a 7. The 4-minute render time is within reason for an image that rates a 7. The cats are still sleeping, but before long they will get up, go to the door and ask to be let out. They will then see the rain and turn moody. I fear tuna will be necessary.
