FOTD -- February 11, 2003 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The exponent of Z in today's image -- 1.5596104695 -- is a slightly more accurate refinement of the exponent that created yesterday's lowly image. This number, when raised to the power of itself, comes as close to exactly equaling 2 as is possible to calculate on my 10-digit pocket calculator. The difference in the resulting parent fractal is insignificant. The improvement in image quality is a result of my better fractal luck, plus a bit of skill. Today's scene could just as easily have been found in yesterday's parent fractal, if I had searched for it in today's area. The numbers create the fractal universe; the fractalist must find the goodies in the universe. I named the image "The Key". I have no idea what the key is supposed to unlock. It could be the door to enlightenment, the door to wonder, the door to mystery, or my favorite door -- the door to reality. Unfortunately, even though I now have the key, I have yet to find the door, so the mystery will remain unanswered. The parent of today's image resembles a mis-shapen M-set, with its nose pointed southwest. Today's scene is located in the 'East Valley' of this M-set, which is located off-center on the north-northeast shore of the main bay. The little midget at the center, shining golden in its isolation, was discovered entirely by luck. I found it by toggling into and out of color-cycling mode and searching for points on the screen that blinked. I often use this trick when searching for midgets, but in order for it to work, the inside must be set to the number zero, which in turn must be set to a very dark shade. In fractals of this exponent range, there are very few clues to the location of midgets. Sometimes a convergence of discontinu- ities points to the midgets, sometimes not. Sometimes I simply get a feeling that a certain feature holds a midget, and some- times I am right. The rating of an above average 6 shows that midgets which exist in fractals with exponents of Z in the range between 1 and 2 need not be the nearly hopeless jumble of disorganized bits and pieces that spoiled yesterday's image. The render time of 8 minutes is a bit excessive for an image which, even though it rates 3 points above the image of the day before, is still only slightly above average. The good news is that the wait to see the image can be largely eliminated by downloading the pre-rendered GIF image from: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> or from: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> As I mentioned in yesterday's discussion, when I became familiar with the consequences of relativity, I was forced to give up the comfortable and intuitive world image that I, along with most everyone else, had developed in the formative years. No longer could I consider time and space to be two separate things. I now needed to see them as two different ways of seeing the same thing -- spacetime. No longer could I assume that the present moment of time exists throughout the universe. There could be no universal moment of time any more than there could be a uni- versal point of space. Distance and time no longer had absolute- ly fixed measurements. Mass turned out to be a different form of energy, and mass also was no longer fixed. And most impor- tantly, at least to me, was the realization that the universe is actually four-dimensional. But when I discovered relativity, the world, as strange and counter-intuitive as it had become, was still out there, real and almost solid. It seemed counter-intuitive only because in our day-to-day lives we experience such an infinitesimally small range of its vast extent. Then I became interested in quantum mechanics, and my philosophi- cal problems grew far greater but far more interesting. If all goes well, I'll discuss this tomorrow. At this point I will say only that anything based on the assumption of the existence of an independent, objectively real world is opened to cross-exami- nation by the implications of Q.M. The occasional light snow continued most of the day Monday here at F.C. It never amounted to much, but with the temperature at freezing, was just enough to keep the dynamic ones confined to quarters, wishing for better things. The better things eventual- ly appeared in the form of a tuna treat. Today is starting sunny but very cold, with deep snow on the ground. It remains to be seen how the duo will react. Problem creating JackOTradez's image in Fractint

Anyone - in JackOTradez's posting to this forum on Sun, 9 Feb 2003 he includes a set of parameters and the formula it refers to. When I use these I get a solid blue screen. In looking at the formula I note that the identifiers 'magxmag' and 'rotskew' are used on the right hand side of equations without their having appeared on the left side of an equals sign to define their value. Are some lines of the formula missing? Or are 'magxmag' and 'rotskew' special identifiers that refer to internal Fractint values like 'pixel', 'rand', fn1 & pi and therefore don't need to be assigned values in the formula? <==<< I did a search for 'rotskew' in the fractint.doc file and also in Bradley Beacham's Formula Tutorial and did not find it so I'm thinking that since it is not in the documentation that it is not likely to be a special identifier. w = h / 0.75 * imag(magxmag) tanskew = tan(imag(rotskew * pi / 180)) Did anyone else have a problem creating the image? FOTD -- February 10, 2003 (Rating 3) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I named today's less-than-stellar image "Stuff" because it is a good illustration of the fragmented bits and pieces of something, or perhaps nothing, that I call fractal 'stuff'. This stuff is not material, since it has no physical basis; yet it is not a total abstraction, since it can easily be rendered and visualized. It is just 'stuff', and that is what I have always considered it. The exponent of Z in the generating formula is 1.559612. I chose this number because 1.559612^1.559612 almost equals 2. (1.559611 is closer.) This fact has little significance in the appearance of the resulting fractal, and was chosen on a whim. Luckily, the image renders in only a few minutes, for I could honestly rate it no higher than an abysmal 3. But it is still worth a quick glance. I have no idea how it got there, for I have moved several times since I received it as a Christmas gift back in the years when I was filled with wonder and just discovering science. (I also had a toy microscope, a toy telescope, a toy weather station, an erector set that was supposed to build a walking robot, [I never managed to get the robot constructed.], and all the other goodies that boys who have decided to become scientists enjoy.) As fate would have it, I never became a 'scientist', whatever one of them is. I almost accidentally became involved in the printing trade and eventually became a graphic designer. But I have never lost that sense of scientific wonder. However, since those early years, I have become familiar with relativity and quantum theory. As a result, I now wonder more than anything else about the philosophical basis of science. Where I once wondered what the moon is made of, I now wonder if the physical world actually is an 'objective reality' or if 'reality' is an attribute we have invented for convenience and then bestowed upon the aggregate of our sensual impressions. And I wonder whether it makes a difference. The star Sirius is 8 light years away. When I was much younger, this meant that if something were to happen at this moment on that star, we would not know about it for 8 years, because it would take 8 years for the information to reach us. Then I became interested in relativity and found that there is no such thing as a universal present moment of time. The phrase 'at this moment on that star' has different meanings for different observers. Instead of thinking that our present moment of time now exists at the position of the star, but due to the finite speed of light, we on earth are seeing the star as it existed 8 years ago, we can just as accurately think that we are seeing the star as it presently exists and the actual time at the star is now 8 years in the future, and it will take us 8 years to reach that future time. So at this moment, what time actually exists on the star Sirius? The question cannot be answered. Time is relative. Asking such a question is like asking someone to find the center of the surface of a featureless sphere. All that can be said is that wherever a particular observer is located, that observer will find himself in his own private present moment of time. And what does this ambiguity of time mean to us in our everyday lives? It means nothing at all -- that is unless we begin traveling around our galactic vicinity at a velocity which is a sizeable percentage of the velocity of light. When (and if) this time comes, we will find ourselves faced with such present- day absurdities as having a twin who was born at the same time as ourselves, yet is 20 years older or younger. But when this happens, the absurdities will not be absurd at all. This relativistic situation might seen weird enough, but relativity at least leaves us with a real world, objectively out there to serve as a firm foundation for the science we have developed over thousands of years. This is more than quantum theory does when it brings into question the very existence of objective reality. With ample sun and a temperature of 41F 5C, the weather was quite pleasant here at F.C. on Sunday. Had the ground not been snow-covered, the dynamically fractal cats would have had a great day in the yard. As it was, they had a not-quite-as-great day on the porch, chasing the few sunbeams that are just beginning to reach there. Today is starting cloudy and colder, with on-and-off periods of light snow. The duo will not enjoy this. I'll enjoy the day better when I finish the work, and I will not finish until I resume it, so until next time, take care, and never lose that sense of wonder, but be careful what you wonder about. Many from CD's I bought, many from downloads; many downloaded formula and PAR files, and the ones I have made myself. Many (>50%) are mediocre and lame, some of the rest are good. About 10% are really good. And every now and then I come across one that literally makes my eyes widen and jaw drop. I am not sure where I downloaded this, but it was very recently. I felt inclined to post it and share it. On a P3-733, the 1600x1200 image takes 22 minutes. FOTD -- February 09, 2003 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal is named "Irregular Minibrot". The reason for the name is the shape of the midget and the irregularity of the features around it. The midget is irregular because instead of iterating Z^2, I iterated Z^sqrt(2) and chose a spot 14.142 levels down the logarithmic spiral to do the rendering. When this low a power of Z is iterated to make a fractal, the results are totally unpredictable. Mandeloids generally have a number of lobes one less than the exponent of Z in the generating expression. Thus the formula Z^5+C draws a Mandeloid with 4 lobes, and the Z^2+C Mandeloid, which is the classic Mandelbrot set, has one lobe. Following this progression, the Z^1.4142 Mandeloid has only 0.4142 lobe, less than half a lobe, but there is no easy rule determining which fraction of a single lobe will appear either in the parent fractal or in the midgets it contains. Theoretically, today's midget is only less than half there. Its buds are smaller than those of the classic M-set and more widely spaced. In addition, the buds are in the wrong places and mis- shapen as well. There are several smaller midgets in the image, which are easily found by toggling into and out of color mode. Some of these may also be interesting. I have not checked to see. With all its imperfections, today's FOTD makes an interesting image, though not interesting enough to rise above the rating of an average 5 that I gave it. Hello group, I've collected a bunch of par-files from you nice guys out there and now that I have a second computer with lots of disk space I would like to have fractint work through this pile and present me with a ton of ready images. Is there a hassle-free way of doing this? I found the batch mode but I have to name every single item to be processed (or are there any wildcards?). Thanx a lot Jaan

FOTD -- February 08, 2003 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is yet another of my evaporated ones, created this time by subtracting a portion of Z^(-7.17) from an equal portion of Z^(-1.717) before adding 1/C. The scene was then 'evaporated' by raising the bailout radius to one-googol and rendering the resulting blank screen with the inside option set to < bof61 >. The real(p3) parameter is so awkward because its value was determined using the evolver feature. I use this feature in my fractal travels more often than is apparent, but in most cases I round off the value to something more aesthetic. In today's case, I was searching for the point where the entire fractal expands to infinity and returns from the opposite direction, and once I had found this point with the evolver, I did not bother with the rounding. Infinity is a curious concept, in some ways quite counter- intuitive. The arithmetic of infinity is very simple -- regardless of what is done to it, infinity remains unchanged. When geometry is expanded to infinity, some even more surprising things happen. An infinitely long line has a single point at infinity. It does not have the two points that intuition would demand. This can be better understood by thinking of two infinitely long parallel lines lying in a flat Euclidian plane, which can be considered either as never intersecting or as intersecting at infinity. (This is two different ways of saying the same thing.) Then imagine a finite point where the two lines intersect. It is only a single point, but as the lines are rotated, this point of intersection moves off in one direction, reaches infinity, then returns from the opposite direction. The point at infinity of the line lies in both directions. At no time during the rotation does a second point of intersection magically appear. The same situation prevails with an infinite plane, which has a straight line at infinity. Points that go off in any one direction and pass beyond infinity return from the opposite direction. (Actually, we're getting into projective geometry, and such a plane is actually a projective plane, but that's a different topic.) I named today's image "Lava-Ring". If enough imagination is used, the boiling pit of molten lava can actually be seen. But since molten lava is not my favorite substance, I could rate the resulting image no higher than a 5. The 24-minute render time also holds down the rating, but this wait can be avoided by downloading the completed GIF image from: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> or from: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> The snow ended by noon on Friday, but the damage had already been done. With 8 inches 20cm of ice-crystals covering the yard, and a temperature around freezing, the fractal cats were confined to the near side of the porch, under the cover, where only a dusting of snow had settled. With such cramped quarters and cold paws, they stayed outside only a few minutes. The snow is still there this morning, so I suppose it will be another bad day for the aging duo. For me, it will be a passable day, but only if the small amount of work goes well. But regardless of how the work goes, I shall return in 24 hours with the next in the near-eternal series of fractals. Until then, take care, and be kind to web-footed fractals. George, Yes, I'm afraid I initiated quite a long discussion about this. The bottom line I think was that most folks did not have any real problems. I have some with going above 640 x 480 rsolution while in XP. I can go higher if I boot to DOS, but that's a story hopefully you won't need to go into.
