[Fractint] Apparently erroneous horizontal streaks in black 'lake' areas in "zoom2"

JackOTradez's "zoom2" (as well as most of his other zooms) has apparently erroneous horizontal streaks in its black 'lake' areas when I calculate it with Fractint 20.02.4 on my Win98 SE vanilla Gateway. I've not had this problem on other images. This happens at any size image / any viewport of the image. I once saw this a long time ago in another fractal on another machine but was unsuccessful in determining what was going on at that time. Since I had not seen this particular artifact in at least six or eight years I assumed that its mechanism had been uncovered and dealt with. I have been 'given' a 2nd chance to see and ask for assistance with this particular artifact and I don't want to drop the ball this time... FOTD October 31, 2003 ================================================ Fractal from November 27, 1987 Today's FOTD is the last that will recycle old images. The ongoing series of new images will resume tomorrow. But before resuming the new images, I thought it appropriate to show my humble fractal beginnings. Today's image was saved on November 27, 1987. It is not the first fractal I ever found, that fractal has long been lost, but it is the earliest fractal that I could find in my fractal archives. The image is that of a simple Mandelbrot midget in 16 colors. I have no idea which of the primitive fractal programs created it. Like the other old images, it was saved without parameters, making a trip to one of the FOTD web sites necessary in order to see it. Both are reproduced here as they originally appeared. ================================================== Fractal of the day, May 08, 1997 Fractal visionaries: Today's fractal again comes from my most prolific and unpredictable formula file -- mandnewt.frm. Sometimes these formulas produce blank screens, sometimes they produce blank screens when the inside fill is set to a single color, but rich fractal images when the inside is set to bof60 or bof61, sometimes they produce Newton's images, sometimes they produce mandeloid images, and sometimes they produce a combination of all of the above. Today's fractal falls into the all of the above category. To see how much of it is inside fill, redraw the image with the inside set to 0 and the passes set to t. With the detail removed it will take only a few minutes. To add my part to the survey, let me say that I use Fractint about 80 percent of the time, an old shareware program by Scott Jones called "Recursive Realm" about 15 percent of the time, and all the other fractal programs about 5 percent of the time. I haven't yet had time to check most of the other fractals posted here, but things are beginning to slow down now businesswise, so over this weekend I'll see how many of the other posted parameter files I can find time to draw. FOTD October 29, 2003 Fractal image from January 08, 1989 Today's image is another blast from the past. In fact, when the time scale of personal fractal programs is considered, it is from ancient times. I found and saved the original PCX format image (now GIF) in January of 1989, at a time when I was still fascinated with the ghost-like remnants of buds that exist in the high-iteration background of many perturbed Mandelbrot sets. The name of the original image file is 'mndlscap', which I assume stood for "Mandelbrot Landscape". If I were naming the image today, I might choose something more like "Celestial Skyscape", but we'll stick with the original name. As was the case with yesterday's ancient image, the parameters of today's image were not included in the old image file, and have long since been lost. This means that the only way to see the image is to visit one of the FOTD web sites at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and at: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> and download the scene from there. Like yesterday's image, today's exceeds the limitations of its meager 16 colors. When I started working with fractals, I had only 16 colors to work with. This might be why I am little disturbed by the 256-color limit of the present Fractint GIF format. If millions of colors were available however, I of course would use them. While admiring today's image from the past, I was struck by the fact that it is better than some of my present day images. If I had to rate it, I would rate it around a 7. As a final note, I wonder what would happen to images like today's if the program were told not to draw to the screen until a certain number of iterations had been reached. Additional blank 'inside' areas would certainly appear, but what would they be shaped like? Today here at Fractal Central is starting rainy, but despite the rain, things are going well. (Unfortunately, they are not going so well in dried-out southern California, but then California does not get hurricanes, violent thunder and lightning storms, or blizzards.) The work backlog is down to one job that arrived yesterday morning. If nothing large comes in today, I will be caught up by the time the late news comes on TV at 11 this eve- ning. Turning to my left, I see Thomas on his shelf, looking wistfully out the window. Tippy is sleeping peacefully on a blanket by the radiator. The rain is due to end by noon, so if the fractal cats do not mind getting their paws wet, they will have a half- pleasant afternoon in the yard. I'll be back in 24 hours with another fractal, quite possibly another one from long ago. And in 3 days, the present-day FOTD will resume its daily schedule. Fractal from 11-11-88 (Alpha-Beta)

FOTD October 28, 2003 Fractal image from November 11, 1988 Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With today's fractal we take a trip back quite a way into the past century, to the year 1988, to an image that was saved in 16-color PCX format, without parameters. Whatever program created it apparently had no ability to write parameter files. As a result, the only way to see the image is to download it from Paul's web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> or from Scott's site at: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> I converted the original PCX image to GIF format and sent it to Paul and Scott separately late last evening. Hopefully, it will have been posted by the time I post this discussion. I do not recall what program created the old image. I was using several primitive fractal generating programs at the time. The earliest version of Fractint I ever used is version 2.0, which was released around that time. I still have it stored on a disk somewhere, but I don't think that version 2.0, which had a very limited range of magnification, created the image. The image is apparently a scene in a perturbed Mandelbrot set. At the time, I was fascinated by the 'ghosts' of the original M-set that remained in the background of 'perturbed' sets. Today's image is a study of one of these 'ghost' buds, with two prominent spiral loops in the foreground, and many thread-like tentacles leading to a 'bulls-eye' at the head of the bud in the background. The two loops most likely inspired the original name "Alpha_Beta". The image stands out as the exception among the scores of humdrum images from the same period. If I knew the parameters, I would like to re-do it in the latest version of Fractint, but that is impossible. And if I don't cut this short, it will be impossible for me to catch up in the other work. So until my next appearance, take care, and it's only four days until the ongoing FOTD resumes. Fractal 18-12-91 (Ancient Mandeloid)

FOTD October 27, 2003 Fractal from December 18, 1991 Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today, we have a truly ancient fractal -- one from long before the FOTD was even dreamed of. The date of the original image file is December 18, 1991. I have no idea what version of Fractint it was created with, though my guess is that it was created with version 15.13, which came with the first edition (1991) of 'Fractal Creations'. The second edition was not published until 1993. Regardless of its origin, the image represents the kind of fractal work I was doing 12 years ago, at a time when I was fascinated with high-order fractals. The high-order period was brief, as I soon discovered that the images all look pretty much the same. But a few high-order images, such as today's scene in the Z^10+C Mandeloid, still stand out. Since the image is so old, I have named it "Ancient Mandeloid". I gave it no rating, feeling that it would be meaningless to compare a 12-year-old image to those I am producing today. The parameter file, which was created by the current version of Fractint from data encoded in the original GIF image file, runs in a speedy 4+ minutes. It is not the first fractal I ever posted to the F.A. list. That honor belongs to some forgotten image that I did not save because I had not yet realized how important the FOTD would become. FOTD 25-10-03 (Inside-Out Midget [7])

FOTD October 25, 2003 I include the original discussion that went with today's fractal, but the image is almost totally new. The original image as it appeared on May 15, 2001 consisted of a Mandeloid- shaped object at the center of a largely empty frame. As it appears today, the Mandeloid has been turned upside down, and I have zoomed in much tighter. The color is also entirely new. All these changes make the image virtually a new one and have justified a name change from "All Pooped Out" to "Inside-Out Midget". The sizzling render time of one minute should make running the parameter file almost a joy. =========================================================== Classic FOTD -- May 15, 2001 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Where are all those extra FOTD's coming from? Every time I post through AOL, it seems to happen. Today's FOTD holds a surprise. During the first half of the render, it looks notably unimpressive, but the lower half features a most unusual Mandeloid. This is not a midget -- it is the whole fractal, which explains why the render goes so fast. The iterated formula is a simple one, subtracting a portion of Z^(-0.7) from Z^(0.7) then adding 1/C. The result is a picture of a totally pooped-out Mandeloid lying flat on its face. I had no choice but to name the image "All Pooped Out". I rated it a 7 because I think it's kind of cute, though I really don't care much for funny-face fractals. The render time of under 3 minutes is reasonable. FOTD October 24, 2003 All is going well here at Fractal Central, both with the work and the cats. And I have some great news. No, I have not saved a bundle on my auto insurance, I have won one-million dollars in a lottery sponsored by Bill Gates. I received the e-mail notification about an hour ago. Some minor bad news is that I must have a touch of amnesia, since I do not recall entering such a lottery. All I must do now is send a check for 750 dollars to cover expenses, and I will receive my million. Now I will be able to forget the graphic-design hassle and devote full time to fractals. The weather today is sunny and chilly. The classic FOTD appears below. ===================================================== CLASSIC FOTD April 11, 2001 (Veiled Objects [7]) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's FOTD is late again . . . no surprise in that. I'm still busy. But I have finally managed to find an image that rates above a 6. True, at a rating of 7, it's only a single step above 6, but it's a start. I named the image "Veiled Objects" when I noticed that the smaller features seem to be draped over the larger objects like a gossamer veil. To create the image I unpacked number 6 in my series of 12 MandNewt (Ikenaga) formulae. This formula is a random variation of the Ikenaga function, and the Ikenaga function is a minor mystery. The image takes 8-1/2 minutes to render at a low-resolution SF5, but the highest resolution available is needed to do it justice. FOTD 23-10-03 (Mandelbrot Glory [6]) Here's a golden not-so oldie from 2-1/2 years ago, around the time I was moving the F.C. workshop from its old to its present location. The move actually caused less of a backup than the one that developed over the past few months and was exacerbated by the 5-day power failure about a month ago. Luckily, the backlog is now down to just under 2 days, and if the present trend continues, will be eliminated by the end of the month. The odds still look good for the ongoing FOTD to resume on November 1st. ========================================================= FOTD 17-03-01 (Mandelbrot Glory [6]) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: It's Saint Patrick's day and all is in confusion. I'm at the stage where the new Fractal Central is operating, but I have no idea where anything is. Nevertheless, I found an average fractal, which appears almost by magic if the parameter file is run. I named the image "Mandelbrot Glory" and rated it a 6. Searching for things such as certain computer disks in dozens of packed cartons leaves little time for discussing fractals, so I'll end my short discussion here.
