FOTD -- July 16, 2002 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I named today's 5-rated image with its well-set-off areas of color "Garden of Minibrot". The reason for the name now eludes me. The image is of another midget in the same unstable valley that held the FOTD of July 14. The midget at the center is clearly of the quadratic variety, but the number of elements surrounding the midget is somewhat confused. I am especially intrigued by the 12 reddish elements, which curve in a counter-clockwise direction and are in 4 sets of 1 large and 2 small elements. The curious feature is that the 8 smaller elements closer to the center curve in the opposite clockwise direction. FOTD 18-07-02 (Writhing Minibrot [6])

FOTD -- July 18, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is part of a fractal that takes the parent fractal of the most recent FOTD, makes a small change in the portions of Z, and adds 1/C instead of C. These changes create a grossly bloated fractal which has a totally new overall shape but retains the inner detail of the original. The scene of today's image is in a totally cut-off feature near a cubic-shaped bud of the parent fractal. I have no idea why a quadratic midget should be located near a cubic bud. I named the image "Writhing Minibrot" because of eight the twisting arms. An outzoom will reveal four arms which are even more twisted, but at this scale the central midget is invisible. Considering the vivid coloring, the rating of 6 is perhaps a bit conservative. But with its routine appearance, I really could not give the image a rating of 7. The render time of the parameter file is under 6 minutes. This is reasonably fast, but still slow enough to make a download of the completed GIF image file worth the slight effort. FOTD -- July 20, 2002 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Yes, I know that the FOTD is late, and I know that it's not the all-time best, but I have an alibi -- a power failure that struck in the middle of a non-FOTD rush job that was already giving me a hard time. Then, to add to the disruption, seeing how the power had failed just when I needed it most, I lost my fractal temper, which helped the situation not the slightest. Luckily, the storm that caused the interruption covered only the local area, and the lights were back on within two hours, but the damage to the work flow had already been done, and my mood remained foul for the rest of the day. But being angry while working at a computer makes one prone to errors. Hopefully, I made none, and the customer, who got his job only 1/2 hour late, will never know that his job gave such trouble. And yes, there is a better-late-than-never fractal for today. Being able to think of nothing better, I named it "Fractal Saturday" and rated it a nominal 5. The image mixes 0.7 parts of Z^(-1.5) with twice as much Z^0.8765 before adding 1/C. It might be the fastest-found FOTD image of all time. I found the scene in under 2 minutes and colored it in an equally short time. Actually, considering the haste with which the image was created, the rating of 5 is not so bad. The render time of under 5 minutes is also not so bad, but the download time of the GIF image file is even better. Luckily for the dynamic duo, the flooding problem down there has been pretty much solved, and they came out a couple hours later, cautious but dry and unharmed. And barring another power failure, I'll return on schedule this Monday with the next FOTD, new and improved for your viewing pleasure. strange Newtons

Here are some new pictures from the wet, rainy Netherlands. Yes, I am still there, but I've got a new computer and it took me a long time before all programs were working well. I did some experimenting with Newton-formulas of somebody else and I found some nice fractals.
