FOTD -- February 22, 2002 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The CD is progressing on schedule, with (so far) only minor problems. If things continue this way, the disk will be ready by this Summer, Winter, wet season, or dry season, depending on the climate where this letter is being read I named today's image 2-of-4, not because it reminds me of a Star-Trek episode, but because it is the second FOTD created with my new experimental formula, which mixes four powers of Z. The formula has been changed since I used it for the most recent FOTD, but the parameter files that were written using the first version of the formula will also work with the present version, (if the function is set to <ident>), so I did not change the formula name. Today's image rates only a 4. But this does not make the formula a failure. Rather, it is a sign that I have not yet become familiar with the things that might be possible when four powers of Z, some negative, some positive, are combined in a single iteration. To be honest, today's image resembles many images that I have passed over while using the M-Mix4 formula. I suspect that adding ever more powers of Z in a single iteration will soon result in diminishing returns, much as raising the exponent does in a formula such as Z^100+C. But I'll give my new formula a fair trial before consigning it to the graveyard of forgotten formulas. (Formulae for the over-educated.) The six-minute render time is bearable. FOTD -- February 28, 2002 (Rating 2) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I have seen a rumor on the Fractint list recently that the upcoming FOTD CD will be a musical one. I would like to put this rumor to rest. There will be no music on the CD, neither fractal music nor otherwise. Fractals make great visual images. They can even be used to select words from a dictionary and place them in an arrangement that will simulate bad poetry. But fractals do not make music that I have the patience to sit, concentrate on, listen to for hours, and be inspired by. When turned into sound, fractals do make very interesting background noise however, though I do not consider this cacophony to be music. Today's lowly 2-rated fractal is little better than 'fractal music', and it represents the end of my adventures with the experimental MandelbrotMix3 formula. The experiment has been a failure. The image shows why. This fractal is typical of those created by the formula. The image tries too hard. It has so much of everything that it ends up having a lot of nothing. It is so busy with competing themes that it has no single theme to serve as a center of attention. In frustration, I named the image "A Boring Lesson". In addition, the formula is exasperatingly slow, and requires the user to calculate a critical starting point manually. The outcome of all this is that the formula has been consigned to the trash bin of forgotten formulae. I have satisfied myself that, just as the Z^2 Mandeloid creates the richest fractal, so does mixing only 2 powers of Z create the richest mixed images. I leave it to the reader to decide whether a 2-rated image is worth the 50 minutes required to render it from the parameter file. Fractint version 20.2 patch 3

Patch 3 to Fractint version 20.2 is now available on the developer's web site. Here's what's new: This patch ran the Xfractint code through -Wall to clear up most of the warnings. Updated the Xfractint man page. Turned on compiler optimizations. Fixed the documentation for the Latoocarfian fractal type thanks to comments by Pierre Desjardins on the Fractint Bug List. The Fractint and Xfractint files have been updated, but not the float-only Fractint files. They will take a while to get this patch incorporated. Jonathan

I love music. It is my lifeline. I am not considered to be a musician, though, unfortunately. I do know that CDs will sell, but how much cash are we talking? But even as the disk progresses, the ongoing FOTD continues to languish, now appearing only every third day. As I struggle through the old e-mail files, I wonder how many CD's I will sell. Yes, I will need to sell the disks -- it takes time to copy a disk and blank disks cost money. Having a disk mass-produced is also costly, but I wonder how many I will actually sell. Being an optimist, I expect to sell not hundreds, not thousands, not tens of thousands, but tens -- if I am lucky. The questionable success of the CD project is not the only concern. While filtering through the masses of discarded e-mail, I cannot avoid re-reading the old FOTD discussions. And as I re-read them and compare them with the recent discussions, I notice a fire in the old ones that is missing in the recent discussions. Does anyone know if the newest AMD Athlon XP is better (speedwise) at running a 16-bit application (Fractint, of course) than the newest Pentium 4's? (Gathering upgrade information) Thanks, Lee Skinner

FOTD 19-02-02 (New MandelbrotMix [5])

FOTD -- February 19, 2002 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Three days have passed since the FOTD last appeared. In that time, I have been working on the upcoming FOTD CD, which is now about 18 percent complete. (The inevitable unexpected problems have not yet appeared, so the disk might actually be closer to 10 percent complete.) In addition to the CD, I have been working on a MandelbrotMix3 formula, which instead of mixing 2 powers of Z, as the M-Mix4 formula does, mixes 4 powers of Z. As of this time, I have done very little work with this new formula, but I have done enough to realize that it has much potential. I have named today's image "New MandelbrotMix" because it marks the first appearance of the new formula, unfinished as the formula is, and it also introduces the next class of fractals, which, mixing 4 powers of Z instead of 2, will presumably have more variety. These new fractals will often have several critical starting points. At this time however, the different critical points must be calculated and entered manually. I have not yet figured how to get the formula to automatically calculate the multiple critical starting points and initialize Z to these values. Today's image rates an average 5, making it a bit slow when rendered from the parameter file. The sun peeked above the holly trees just enough to give them a few spots of midday warmth to chase. The temperature of 46F 8C was a bit chilly however, especially when the sun dipped behind the trees again, sending the dynamic duo scurrying for their warm beds indoors.
