no joy w/{fractint,winfract} on Windows XP SP1a
Fractint 20.0 crashes NTDVM (NT dos virtual machine?). WinFract 18.21 crashes on launch. Is there no fractint joy for Windows XP? -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline"-- code samples, sample chapter, FAQ: <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/> Pilgrimage: Utah's annual demoparty <http://pilgrimage.scene.org>
No problem here running WinFract 18.21on XP - runs in 16bit mode Can run Fractint too - but graphics card (parhelia) won't work with res better than 360*480. Rich wrote:

It must be something to do with my video card/drivers. WinFract 18.21 actually crashes NTDVM, which I would not have expected at all. -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline"-- code samples, sample chapter, FAQ: <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/> Pilgrimage: Utah's annual demoparty <http://pilgrimage.scene.org>
I checked two other XP boxes - similar results a desktop with a matrox millennium fractint will do max 360*480 the other (a thinkpad) will do full 1024 * 768 what is your graphics card ? have you updated your drivers to latest release ? winfract should not crash XP - sounds like the 16 bit exec module is corrupt Rich wrote:

I have not had good results with XP professional either. Fractint runs fine in the F3 (320x200x256) mode. In just about any other mode, the image is drawn, and then, with the complete graphics image on the screen, XP is well and truly hung. FWIW this machine has an Athlon chip, not that I think that's the cause. I'd sure like to debug where the crash is happening. I recall trying earlier Fractint versions, and I don't think this crash is due to any recent changes. Occurs to me I could edit fractint.cfg and try to make up some "bios" video modes and see if that helps. Tim
