<http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/fractals/fractdev/FractIntSetup-21.00.alpha2.msi> Use float=yes or you're not likely to get an image. Keyboard handling improved. The restore image <r> command doesn't show any sub-directories or .gif files in the default directory, even though some were saved there. Also the Speed key string to specify a different directory doesn't change directories.

This is all really great feedback, Lee! I appreciate it! I will warn you that now that the holidays are over, I'll be going back to putting time in on my book, so the progress may be slower now. However, I will try to keep putting in time on fractint as long as the weather is cold and miserable. As soon as Spring hits, though... :) -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>
With the full pathname within double quotes of fractint.exe, followed by fractint commands, the Windows XP Run command WORKS!! Hooray for Richard!! Example: "c:\stone soup group\fractint for windows\fractint.exe" savename=fract033 overwrite=yes Go to the X-Screen, and you'll see that it works! Lee

No. I just tried it, and was pleased that it worked. I may have been able to set float=yes in alpha 1 this way had I thought about it, as I wasn't able to get to the float option on the X-screen then. Any idea on your timeline when you may have full screen video to test browser, zoom, map editor, showdot, etc.? Lee

Its sooner rather than later. To be honest, putting images on the screen is easier than this damn keyboard I/O stuff! lol Having simple GDI output is probably the next thing that will happen. Or I might just merge the float-only code.... -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>
Unable to access files other than fractint.par. The par hypnoteyes2 causes a crash - with either float=yes or no and the program window disappears. Most pars seem to work. Lee
<http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/fractals/fractdev/FractIntSetup-21.00.alpha3.msi> Fixes the browsing for files. I added support for generating a minidump on a genuine crash (as opposed to an unexpected but programmed exit.) If your window disappears on you unexpectedly, look for a file called "fractint.dmp" in your install folder. If this file is present, compress it and attach it to an email to me with the bug report. I can use this with VS.NET to see exactly where the code crashed.
The par hypnoteyes2 causes a crash - with either float=yes or no and the program window disappears.
This is because this par does "reset type=julia ..." and leaves it in integer mode, causing the stub routines to be called, which simply exit immediately. So for now, try editing the .par file, but in the short term I can put in something that says "integer not supported, switching to float" waits for a keypress and then restarts the image with float=yes. That would at least let you continue reasonably. We will either ditch the integer types (more likely), or add C code implementations of the assembly integer types (less likely). -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>

Not for me! Still unable to use <r> command to see files or sub-directories and still unable to switch to a different parameter file using <F6>.

Forced a crash using the hypnoteyes2 par. F4W crashed, but left no .dmp file in the directory. I don't see a difference between alpha 3 and alpha 2. (Is there any way to interrogate or display the version number?) I installed alpha 3 twice just to make sure. Lee

Interesting. Its working in debug, but not in release. I'll investigate and probably have something for you soon.

Technically this isn't a crash. Its the code saying "hey, I shouldn't be here, ever!" and exiting immediately. I might fix this for you too :-).

If you go to Add/Remove Programs, select the entry for FractInt for Windows and click the Support Information link, you will see the version number displayed. These alpha versions are stamped 20.99.<n> for alpha release <n>. I should probably just change the #defines in the code to match instead of saying 21.0 -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>

Good idea!
It will probably work if you install to a folder with no spaces in the path.
Yes. I installed it in E:\Frac4Win and the file browsing now works great. Do you think we should invite any other people on the fractint list to help out in testing? You don't seem to be getting any other testers from the FracDev list unless Hal Lane also jumps in. There will be lots to test once full screen video is enabled. Lee

Ah. I see the problem now. It will probably work if you install to a folder with no spaces in the path. My dev path is like this, but the installed one doesn't like it and strips the spaces out of the path as shown on the screen. I'll take a look and see what the code is doing. For now, reinstall alpha 3 to a path like c:\fractint as a workaround. -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>

The old code is full of assumptions about 8.3 filenames with no spaces. As I'm sure you know <g!> Tim

I thought with the xfractint merge, most of that was factored out. But its probably #ifdef'ed on XFRACT which I'm not defining. I'll sort it out soon enough :). Being forced to go through all the weird bits of code the UI invokes is instructive, even if sometimes painful :). -- "The Direct3D Graphics Pipeline" -- DirectX 9 draft available for download <http://www.xmission.com/~legalize/book/download/index.html> Legalize Adulthood! <http://blogs.xmission.com/legalize/>
