Probably just for convenience to build in the place where the source is, a developer convenience. I have no problem changing it. I wish I knew better Linux conventions. On a vahuely related note: at work we are currently undergoing two giant migrations to Linux. One on the Shuttle planning platform (currently IBM PowerPC Unix) and the other the Mission Control Center (currently DEC Alpha). In both cases the reason is that the vendor will no longer support the hardware. Tim
