This was so stupid, I can't believe it. OK, so I kept wondering why I always got a black screen when rendering. So I start stepping through the fractal compute code.... and it calls calcmandasm(). Which is stubbed out. To do nothing. Ah! So just set float to yes on the 'x' screen and presto! The saved GIF file is the classic fractint start image. I feel relieved that I reached at least my minimum goal before my self-imposed deadline! Since the integer mandelbrot assembly code wasn't ported to C anyway for xfractint, it seems like now's a good time to just do the float-only merge.
