As an aside, I installed Vmware under Windows instead of Linux, Then I was able to install Linux and move all my files into the new installation. I would have preferred to do it the other way around, but that would have required re-installing Windows onto a virtual hard disk. That was way more work than I wanted to attempt, with no guarantee of success. At least now I don't have to reboot to check my email.
