Athlon woes

I built a computer last year using an Athlon with a Gigabyte motherboard. I had troubles with Fractint - with any SVGA mode the computer would hang after the completion of the image. I always assumed this was an Windows XP issue. Today I tried Fractint with freedos on the same computer, with the same results. So apparently it's an incompatability bgetween fractint and my compuiter. Truecolor, 320x200, diskvideo, and even tweaked modes work. SCGA modes fail, and only after the image completes. This behavior appears to have nothing to do with recent versions. Has anyone else had trouble with Athlon? Hmm, maybe I need to look at bios settings. Tim

Winfract zoomin and zoomout problem

Tim, I fixed the Winfract zoomin/zoomout problem. This is where, once you zoomed out, it wouldn't switch back to zooming in. Still can't explain what happened, or how what I did fixed it. In winfract.h, I changed the define for IDM_ZOOMIN from 1006 to 1060. Some of that old Windows magic. Jonathan

Thank you all for your comments about Fractint and Windows and your efforts on Fractint's behalf. I have derived much pleasure from Fractint's use and the results of other's using it to explore the vast uncharted realms of fractals. In particular, I like the powerful capability that the formula parser provides. I would like to see Fractint ported into MS Windows in some form so that many more people can benefit from its capabilities. I am trying to figure out if I might be of some use to the development team. If I understand your emails correctly, I currently see multiple paths being pursued towards integrating Fractint into Windows. I see that the difficulty (practicality) of pursuing any one particular path varies with the decisions made re initial features, memory model, run-time environment, targeted op sys and development environment. Its difficult for me to see which path is a practical one for me to attempt to try to support and which is best for the future of Fractint -- especially in view of the lack of a current consensus concerning a practical eventual target model and execution environment. I can't boot my old computer which has my Fractint environment. However I'm pretty sure I hosed it with an ill-advised Microsoft update, and I do have a backup, and can probably recover. Of more concern is that we're moving our kitchen into our dining room because of our house addition project, which is, shall we say, a slight disruption :-) Despite both of these issues, I'll make an effort to look at Winfract this weekend. Sooner or later I need to get MSC working in XP. I also have watcom installed, I'm nearly good to go with MSC except environment variables which collide with Watcom. I may just get rid of Watcom, I'm not using it. At least I got the DSL working, no thanks to the phone company, who came out and wired my splitter wrong while debugging a noise on the phone line. I fixed it myself once I realized that the phone line was OK outside the house. Two different DSL guys came out, saw the outside line was OK, didn't bother to look inside the NID (Network Interface Device) and left. Winfract zoomout to zoomin switch broken

Tim, The Winfract zoomout to zoomin switch is broken. I broke it between April 25th and May 1st. If you download a release from the repository for those two dates, you should be able to duplicate the problem. I did make some changes on April 30th, but I don't see how they could have affected the zoomout to zoomin menu items. If you get the chance, please take a look. Thanks. Jonathan

Winfract help files

Tim, I started to edit the winfract.rtf help file. Saved it, then tried to recompile. No luck! My version of Word and Wordpad both add fonts (and probably other things) that the help compiler doesn't understand. Boo Hiss! Jonathan
