Consider this issue a warm up. There will actually be something to talk about early next week with the next issue after BYU has actually practiced and done and demonstrated something to write about. Not exactly giddy about the grind, but like all politicians, still grateful there aren't any term limitations on what I do for a living. Ken Jennings Style BYU Football in Jeopardy Ken Jennings, the LDS game show contestant, won $3.1 million just by asking questions on Jeopardy. In my last real job, I made $6.50 an hour, but could eat all I wanted of the French fries that fell on the floor. No questions asked. There will be plenty of questions about this new season that starts today with BYU football opening its tenth fall camp under Bronco Mendenhall. Here we go. HB Arnett.Who's is either the dumbest or most delusional guy you know? Fallen French Fries. What is his favorite food? Football Fluff and Stuff Marital bliss makes for double digit winning seasons That's a reference to BYU starting quarterbacks. The last time BYU had married quarterbacks at the helm of their offense, they churned out 4 double digit win seasons. John Beck and Max Hall both were married and led the Cougars to an 11-2 season in 2006; 11-2 in 2007; 10-3 in 2008 and 11-2 in 2009. Since then, single BYU quarterbacks have only produced single digit winning seasons. In case you missed it, Taysom Hill was married in the off season. BYU history says that should be good for a very good year for Bronco Mendenhall and his Cougars. The W factor this season likely won't be Hill's new wife, but a bevy of new wide receivers, who will make Hill's passing game much better than it was last year. A proven runner, you can look for opposing defensive coordinators to try and take Hill and his rushing prowess out of production. That means that the Cougars should have a passing game that is very productive. We shall see. Speaking of seeing, in our last newsletter, we mentioned that BYU had two home and home series set with two schools from the big boys ranks. A couple of days after we said it would happen; BYU announced a home and home with UCLA. A few days ago Tom Holmoe and his crew announced a home and home with Northern Illinois. This is not the second home and home we were talking about. It will still be announced. In addition to BYU adding games with NIU, they also announced that Idaho State will be playing in Provo again next season on the 2015 schedule. That game will replace a game with Southern Miss which will now be moved to another year. BYU better hope they still have a married quarterback for next year. The 2015 lineup includes 3 of the first 4 games of the season on the road against Nebraska, UCLA and Michigan. The lone home game in that four game set is Boise State in Provo. The past couple of seasons, Bronco Mendenhall has suspended players from games for the violation of team rules. That included guys like Spencer Hadley and Cody Hoffman among others. There have been other times when he has suspended players from practices. I never understood that concept. Not having to practice sounds like a bonus, not an onus, but that is why they pay Bronco the big bucks. The suspension from practice is kind of like my annual self suspension from publishing the newsletter weekly during the summer months. The lessons I have learned while punishing myself by taking the summer off have been invaluable and invigorating. I've learned to take it like a man and suffer stoically. All of which brings us back to real suspensions. There have been rumblings that there will be some "team violation rules" suspensions coming up for the opener against Connecticut. If there are, it shouldn't have too big of an impact on the outcome of that contest. Speaking of Cody Hoffman, he is hanging on quite nicely in the preseason camp of the Washington Redskins. They signed the 6-4 receiver as a free agent. Hoffman still doesn't have NFL speed, but he is exhibiting at the Skins' camp what he did at BYU. He has great hands, can catch the ball and is willing to go over the middle and take a hit to pick up a crucial first down. The Redskins picked up DeSean Jackson from the Eagles in the offseason and also have Pierre Garcon and Santana Moss among others vying for the 5-6 receiver spots on the 53-man roster. Currently the Skins have 13 receivers in camp. My money is on Hoffman making the team, but he likely will start the year on the practice squad. , Is Collinsworth Causing Snickers (Not the candy bar)? This past week Kyle Collinsworth has made some noise in the news. After a full summer of silence, the 6-6 guard/forward/rebounder/defender said that he is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation of his knee injury suffered during the WCC tournament in March. Collinsworth said he should be ready to go when BYU basketball practice begins in October. That is the good news for Cougar basketball fans. The potentially bad news is that Collinsworth also said that he could declare for the NBA draft at the conclusion of his upcoming junior year. That depends on two factors: His play during the season and his NBA evaluation. He would only come out early if he is told he would be a first round selection. If you have followed what I have said about Collinsworth since his freshman season, you know that I think he is a sure fire NBA prospect, with one major caveat. He can't shoot. That is where the Snickers come in. Many BYU basketball aficionados may have grinned when Collinsworth mentioned heading to the NBA. Those grins were because of the grimaces we all had and have when he is shooting at the foul line and beyond. But make no mistake. He is NBA material in every other aspect of his game. Even more good news is that Collinsworth has said that since he hasn't been able to jump and run for most of the summer, he has spent lots of time shooting foul shots. With Collinsworth's ability to get to the rim anytime he wants, he sees lots of time on the charity stripe. If he indeed can be more consistent from the line he hands down is headed to the NBA, not as a Snickers bar, but as "Pay Day" bar. Access by the Numbers BYU football fans will get a couple of chances to watch their Cougars practice during this fall camp. The first is tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 2 when BYU's second day of practice will be open to the public. Gates at the practice fields open at 10:00 am with drills actually beginning at 10:40 and running to approximately noon. The team will also conduct a scrimmage open to the public on Friday night, Aug. 15, at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Gates open at 5 p.m. with the scrimmage getting underway at 6 p.m. If you want to put a name with a body, here is the most current fall camp roster available from BYU: A newer roster should be available next week which will include the new freshman and transfers that showed up at fall camp. We will publish that roster when it is officially available. Until then, this should get you started on your fall football fix. 1 Ross Apo 6-3 207 WR Senior Arlington, TX 1 Sam Lee 6-0 186 DB Junior Brandywine, MD 2 Dallin Leavitt 5-11 198 DB Sophomore
