Here's the latest I am hearing about BYU Basketball recruiting. 1. We know about Gavin Baxter. The 6-7 athletic win from Timpview HS is the real deal. He will head out on a mission before enrolling. 2. Am hearing the Connor Harding, the 6-5 guard from Highland HS in Pocatello, is on the verge of committing to the Cougars. Could be as early as a few days from now. We will see. 3. This is the big one.literally. The word I get is that Alan Hamson has committed to BYU and will walk on this coming fall when he gets back from his current LDS mission in Southern Cal. He has turned down scholarship offers to walk on at BYU. Here's the deal with Hamson. He is the younger brother of BYU women's b-ball and v-ball player Jennifer Hamson. He had a very ordinary high school career, primarily because he suffered from scoliosis and breathing problems. He played at 7-foot at Pleasant Grove and could only go 2-3 minutes at a stretch before having to take a breather. Before leaving for his mission, he had surgery and other procedures to alleviate his health issues. He is now 7-4, healthy and ready to go. He has five years to play four. Don't know if he will redshirt this year or not. Think Mormon Manute Bol or a skinny Mark Eaton. The basketball guys I talk to say he is a better shot blocker than Shawn Bradley. If he can bulk up, this could be serious. It would allow Eric Mika to play the four and give Dave Rose plenty of options in the front court, especially defensively. We'll see how this plays out, but BYU coaches are plenty excited. According to a guy familiar with his Hamson's present physical status, he says Cougar basketball junkies are the ones that should be excited.
