HB Arnett's "Lite" <mailto:hbarnett@fiber.net> hbarnett@fiber.net 801 372 0819 Vol. 38, Issue 2, August 13, 2018 Line of Succession Queen Elizabeth and BYU Football This fall BYU football camp has been buzzing with line of succession theories. Who is on the quarterback throne now and who will succeed to the throne? To sort it all out, we need a primer on other lines of succession. Let's start with the Brits. Here is the latest Royal depth chart. Queen Elizabeth Prince Charles Prince William Prince George Princess Charlotte Prince Louis Prince Harry Prince Hugh Queen Elizabeth is the returning starter, Prince Charles is pushing hard for playing time and showing lots of patience during fall camp. Prince William is the dark horse in this QB race. He has youth, charm and a good-looking wife. Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis and Prince Harry are on the scout team and redshirting. Prince Hugh Grant is grey shirting and not currently enrolled as a full time royal. If he does a remake of Knotting Hill with Julia Roberts, look for her to play Queen Elizabeth and Grant to take the role of Prince Phillip.again. BYU Head Football Coach Depth Chart (My opinion only) Kalani Sitake Andy Reid Jay Hill Darrell Bevell Sitake is still seated on the throne, but another 4-9 season and he won't remain there. Andy Reid was the heir apparent to succeed LaVell Edwards, but like Britain's King Edward(s), he abdicated for the NFL and a Wallis wad of cash. Jay Hill is at Weber State and if he can duplicate the 11-3 record of last season, he will be on a lot of schools' radar. He has improved every season. He went, 2-10, 6-5, 7-5 and 11-3. His team has made the FCS playoffs the last two years. His daughter is enrolled at BYU and works for BYUtv. Two of his assistant coaches from last year, Fesi Sitake and Preston Hadley, were hired by Sitake (Kalani) for this season. Bevell is unemployed after being let go as the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks after last season. My Longshot Head Coach Candidate Some of you have sat in front of this guy at games for years. He knows all there is to know about football and isn't shy about expressing his thoughts. Could be a candidate if he shaved his beard, bought a shirt and wore it and went anonymous on the chat rooms and radio shows he frequents. Oh yeah, a little deodorant wouldn't hurt either. Now for Some Serious Succession Talk Mangum Wilson Critchlow Hall Romney Conover McKee Let's start the current quarterback discussion with a BYU football replay and recap in 1992. John Walsh started that season. He gave way to Steve Clements while Paul Shoemaker redshirted. Clements went down with an injury. He was replaced by Ryan Hancock. The former Anaheim Angel pitcher played well but wrecked his knee against Utah in the last game of the season. Tom Young then started the Aloha Bowl against the Kansas Jayhawks. KU won. If your counting, that is 4 quarterbacks that played that season. Look for the same this year. With the new 4-game redshirt exemption, you can go to the bank that we will see five quarterbacks on the field for the Cougars this season. That would be Tanner Mangum, Zach Wilson, Joe Critchlow, Jaren Hall and Baylor Romney. We just don't know when we will see them. Of course, the question everybody wants answered is who will get the start against Arizona. I still say it will be Mangum, but because BYU is looking for a quarterback horse they can saddle and ride for multiple seasons, Zach Wilson will also see plenty of action. My thoughts are that he won't start to get those multiple minutes until game four against McNeese State. If I'm wrong in the Mangum projection, that must mean that Wilson is a super star right now. Who would complain about that? Not me. I don't know how BYU coaches will handle Critchlow, Hall and Romney, but they also will see the field this year. If Wilson is the multi-year answer for the Cougars at quarterback, then the next question is who comes after him. That would be Jacob Conover and possibly Tanner McKee. Conover will be trying to land his third state title at Chandler HS in Arizona this fall. He will then head on a mission. McKee is the QB BYU rushed heavily, but they were bested by Stanford and busted by the dismal offense of last season. McKee will be in Brazil serving an LDS mission this season and next and assures Stanford he will be back. Just remember, Taysom (Hill signed with Stanford) and Tanner (McKee committed to Stanford) both start with a T which also is the first letter of Time which has a way of changing minds and perceptions about Stanford and BYU. We will see. The British have their monarchy and set succession, but BYU will need diplomacy. If Wilson is the heir apparent, how are they going to keep Jaren Hall happy and in the program? Stay tuned. Somewhere there is an LDS eighth grader wearing braces on his teeth and gnashing those teeth for a chance to someday be a BYU quarterback. Here's hoping I'm still alive to find out who that brash, brace-wearing boy is. Until then, I plan on shaving my beard, buying a shirt and wearing it with deodorant while letting those BYU coaches who get paid to make personnel decisions make them. If they are right, I'll be happy. If they aren't, I'll start covering ping pong, tack on a 40% tariff on the newsletter and start selling it in China. Fake news BYU held a closed scrimmage Saturday that will go a long way to determining the QB succession scene for this year. I checked with CNN, The New York Times and Washington Post, and even they didn't have a source at the scrimmage and they always claim to have a source.
