HB Arnett's "Lite" hbarnett@fiber.net <mailto:hbarnett@fiber.net> 801 372 0819 Vol. 38, Issue 1- C, August 9, 2018 Keg Handle Charlie, Ingomar, Montana, The Jersey Lilly and BYU Football? I married a cowboy's daughter from Montana. She was reared on a ranch 8 miles from Melstone which is 18.4 miles from Ingomar. Melstone actually isn't a town because my definition of town is that it is on both sides of the road. All 3 Churches, 4 bars and the post office were all on one side of Route 12 in Musselshell County. The ranch was in Rosebud County. So was the Jersey Lilly. It is a historic bar/restaurant landmark and still in operation today. Keg Handle Charlie isn't. He died years ago. The story goes that Keg Handle ordered a rare steak at the Jersey Lilly. They brought it out and while it was bloody, he didn't think it was rare enough. He got up went back to the kitchen, grabbed the cook by his bib overalls and lifted him up and sat him on the grill and seared his seat for 8 seconds. He took him off and then said these famous words, "When I say rare, this is what I mean". It appears to me that a "little seat searing" is what is happening with BYU football during this fall camp. Jeff Grimes, the new OC, is doing the grilling. He and his new offensive staff have lifted up the Cougar offense and held their butts to the fire. When he says, "This is what I mean", the offense is now paying attention. So am I. Here is my Keg Handle Charlie/Ruth Chris fall camp evaluation with 21 days left until opening night in Arizona. Zach Wilson. He comes from a Utah Legacy family, Red on the inside, but warming up quickly. He is a rare blue find. Unbelievable talent. As mentioned before, the MVP of BYU football may be Jack Tuttle, the QB from San Marcos, CA, that the Utes committed to early. While Tuttle is the real deal, he will have to be fabulous, because we see this Wilson guy doing some super searing of the Utes down the road. To me the perfect BYU steak is rare, because that means they have NFL potential. That is still rare at BYU. My picks for future paychecks in the pros are Sione Taki Taki, Khyiris Tonga, (if he can make the transition from feed lot to grass fed.) He is listed now at 340 pounds, but extremely talented at any weight. I also like Corbin Kaufusi in this category. All of which brings up this question. If BYU had Fred Warner, now in the NFL, and three potential NFL guys as projected above, why was the defense so bad last season? BYU will not be the perfect steak this season. They can't beat Wisconsin, Washington and the last decade has proven they can't beat Utah. There goes the perfect season and steak. BYU has enough palatable players to get to 7 wins this season. Depending on the quarterback play and games against McNeese State, Hawaii, UMass, Boise State, Utah State and New Mexico State which are all palpable and probable wins, this season and steak will depend on how the Cougars do in their first two games against Arizona on the road and Cal at home. This describes the career of Tanner Mangum. I still peg him as the starting quarterback for the Cougars. He can't go back and redo last season and his injuries. He can, however, show that his high school hype was the real deal. I still think Zach Wilson is the future at quarterback at BYU, but Mangum will determine in the first three weeks of the season if that future is now or next year. Mangum is a likeable guy. I like him to match his quarterback skills with his personality this season and see a major rebound for him personally and the team collectively. Past the point of no return, may also describe this season for Kalani Sitake. If he can only muster 4 wins with a new staff, then he may not return next season. I don't see that happening. This may describe most of the recruiting done during the last 6-7 years. If you want a good steak, you have to recruit good quality meat. I see improvement in recruiting and it should start to pay dividends. Good meat, however, needs to age. At BYU, the honor code, academic standards and social media, just makes it harder to keep that meat in school and on scholarship.
