You probably didn’t want to hear that, but already have. Here are some other names and phrases that you will want or not want to hear during the game. Tanner Mangum…Not Hear. We absolutely do not want to hear Tanner Mangum’s name mentioned in the first three quarters of the game. If we do, it means that Taysom Hill is injured. We do want to hear his name mentioned as handing off the ball to Nate Carter late in the fourth quarter. That means BYU is in mop up mode and will leave Lincoln with their first win of the season. Taysom Hill…Need to Hear. We need to hear Hill’s name mentioned at least 15 times running with the ball (Scrambling with the ball is a bonus). He is still head and shoulders, and knees and toes too, BYU’s best rushing threat. BYU won’t beat the Huskers strictly throwing the ball. If BYU can’t rush for at least 150 yards against the Huskers, they won’t win. Even if we hear Hill throwing for 350 or more yards, without a decent game on the ground, BYU is beat. Tejan Koroma…Need to hear. If we want to hear Greg Wrubell scream Cougs win, Cougs, win, we need to hear that Koroma is either starting the game at center or starting the second half of the game at center. As Koroma goes, so goes the offensive line. We keep hearing that he is a possible suspension candidate for this game. Kai Nacua…Won’t hear. The junior safety is taking one for the team. Literally. If he plays, BYU will never live down the negative feedback from the local and national press. I just don’t see how BYU, which is so public relations conscious, can play Nacua. He was already indicted by the press and post-game video against Memphis. Bronco may not have convicted him, but the public has and he will have to serve his one game sentence. Nate Gerry…Want and Don’t Want to Hear. If Gerry, the returning starting safety for Nebraska, is making tons of tackles, especially downfield, it means that the BYU running game is clicking. If he is making interceptions (he led the Huskers last season with 5), the passing game of the Cougars is struggling. If Gerry leads the team in tackles, BYU wins. Frank Wintrich…Want to Hear. If we hear Wintrich’s name in the fourth quarter being mentioned, it means that despite temperatures in the 90’s and high humidity, BYU is still in the game with a chance to win. Announcers will be praising BYU’s conditioning and ability to hang with the Huskers. Jonny Linehan…Don’t want to hear. Hearing “Linehan back to punt” more than 7 times means Cougars lose. Nick Howell…Want to Hear. We need to hear Bronco Mendenhall compliment Howell in his post-game show for how essential he is to BYU on defense. If you hear Howell’s name called in after game chatter. BYU will have won. Jamaal Williams…Don’t want to hear. If Williams name is brought up it will be in context of how much the BYU running game misses him. That will mean the Cougars lose this game Michael Davis…Don’t want to hear. If Davis’ name and the phrase “beat deep” is mentioned over two times, BYU is 0-1. Nick Kurtz…Need to hear. If we hear the name Kurtz along with “Touchdown” BYU wins this game. Trevor Samson…Need to hear and afraid to hear. “Samson setting up from the 42 yard line for the win”, is what we need to hear. “Samson setting up from the 42 yard line for the win is what some of us are afraid to hear. That’s because we remember a Holiday Bowl field goal against Indiana for the win. A field goal against Boise State in Boise for the win and a field goal against Utah with Jake Heaps at quarterback for the win. BYU went 0-3 in those “for the win” field goals. Bronco Mendenhall…Don’t want to hear. “They made one more play than we did.” Todd McShay…Want to hear. “I have Hill as the second QB taken in my first mock draft of the year. McShay, the Mel Kiper sidekick at ESPN, will be on the sideline doing in game reporting. The actual game will be called by Sean McDonough with Chris Spielman providing commentary. If McShay is gushing, BYU is in the game. HB Arnett…Want to hear. For future mission funding for my wife and I, “I’ll take BYU and the points against Nebraska and put me down for $100 on BYU at 500-1 to win the national title.” Less the 10% juice for booking the bet and the 10% juice I’ll need to pay to qualify for a Church mission, I like my chances - for a BYU over Nebraska win, but not a national title. What my Bishop wants to hear. “Just kidding about the betting Bishop.” But I really do like BYU chances against Nebraska for the season opener and if the over/under on BYU wins in their first 4 games against NU, BSU, UCLA and UM is two. I’m taking the over. Yes, Taysom Hill is that good. The BYU defense is improved and the Cougars really do have playmakers at wide receiver. That said it is still Nebraska in Lincoln. I don’t care. I still expect to hear “Samson from 42 yards out for the win.” I also expect him to make it and BYU bedlam to ensue. I call it BYU 27 Nebraska 25. BYU Leading Pac-12 in early Soccer Standings We will likely never know how BYU football and basketball would fare as a member of the Pac-12 in football and basketball, but we do know that when it comes to women’s soccer, the Cougars are leading the league in wins. They are currently 3-0 and atop the league standings. BYU has beat Arizona 3-2, in an exhibition match, whipped Cal 2-0 in Hawaii and beat the Buffs of CU by the same score Friday night in Provo. The Lady Cougars continue their Pac-12 run of games with Utah in Provo this Friday night and a matchup in Palo Alto against Stanford the following Monday. The Stanford game is a makeup affair because the two teams were rained and mudded out in Hawaii. Supposedly, Stanford has committed to make a return trip to Provo sometime in the future. In women’s volleyball, the Lady Cougars are 0-1 in Pac-12 play. After opening with a 3-0 sweep of Chicago State and a 3-1 win over then No. 7 ranked North Carolina, BYU lost 0-3 to the No. 22 ranked USC Trojans. All games were part of the Cougars’ participation in the season opening Women of Troy Baden Invitational hosted by USC. Yo Hablo Poquito How do you say Cupcake in Spanish? I speak Taco Bell Spanish fluently. “Hey, give me four tacos to go and make sure you put four packets of salsa verde in the bag with it.” Taza de Tortas por los pumas is probably not how you say Cougar Cupcakes in Spanish. I think the official translation is actually: Eurocolegio Casvi, Albacete, European Basketball Academy and Castelldefels. Those were the four teams the BYU basketball team defeated handily on their recent 10-day tour of Spain. In English, these games are best translated as two notches above pick up games in the Richards PE Building. Think Arizona Christian, Adams State and Alaska, three teams on BYU’s current 2015-16 schedule.
