Daylight Savings
Haws’ Timely Shot Coincided with Clock and BYU Moving Forward on Saturday
Santa Clara scared the living daylights out of BYU last Saturday night at the Orleans Arena.
Thanks to Tyler Haws’ game saving shot from 15 feet with 2.5 seconds remaining in the contest, BYU lives another day in their quest to make another appearance in the upcoming NCAA tournament. Just like the Daylight Savings clock, the Cougars advanced Saturday night to the semi-finals of the WCC post season tournament. Click here to see the game winning shot.
With the 78-76 win, BYU will now face Portland late Monday night. Another win and BYU should, by most accounts and pundits, assure themselves a bid in the prestigious post season tournament.
A win over Portland will also most likely get the Cougars matched up again on Tuesday night against Gonzaga.
Dave Rose has been saying for the last month that BYU is already playing their own tournament. It has been a win and advance mode for BYU the last 7 games. Just like most tournaments, there are games that the better teams should advance easily, but have to gut out a last second win to keep playing. That is what the Cougars did Saturday night. They gutted out a win.
Misfiring from Distance
They did it with their late season spark plug misfiring. Skyler Halford, who has given the Cougars a charge in their recent run, did not have one of his better games off the bench. His patented three point barrage was missing. He was just 1 of 4 from distance.
Halford wasn’t the only bench player to have an off night. Frank Bartley IV and Anson Winder also weren’t their usual dynamic selves when their numbers were called.
That’s why Haws’ game winner and game high 30 points and 9 rebounds were so crucial for the Cougars. Kyle Collinsworth also had his dependable 15 points and 8 rebounds. The third guy who played well was Corbin Kaufusi. He had 7 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. The Hakeem Hope lives on.
One of the ancillary impacts of Daylight Savings going into effect is the hour of lost sleep. One of the ancillary impacts of BYU moving forward will be their ability to make shots from distance.
If the Cougars are going to advance from here on out, they will have to shoot the ball from beyond the arc much better than they did against the Broncos of Santa Clara. BYU was just 5 of 15 from distance Saturday night.
We mentioned Halford going just 1 of 4. Chase Fischer was 2 of 5 and Haws was just 1 of 5 from behind the line. That will have to improve significantly tonight against Portland because the Pilots are big and deep inside the paint. BYU will need to soften that interior defense with some decent outside shooting.
If that happens, then BYU should continue winning and will face the winner of Gonzaga-Pepperdine for the WCC Tournament Championship crown on Tuesday night.
Tonight’s game will be televised live on ESPN2. Tip is set for 9:30 pm Mountain Time. The Championship game will be broadcast by ESPN and will start at 7 pm Mountain Time.
Match Made in Heaven
Lady Cougs Pull out Late Game Win
Match.com, Farmersonly.com, eHarmony.com, OurTime.com. Take your pick of these matchmaking websites, but somebody should sign Tyler Haws and Lexi Eaton up.
Based on the opening round results of the WCC basketball tournament, the two have a lot in common.
Haws led BYU to a win over Santa Clara with 30 points and the game-winning shot. Eaton did the same in the Lady Cougars’ in their 65-64 win over St. Mary’s. She led all scorers with 30 points and hit the game winner with the clock winding down. Click here to see the shot.
The Ladies now face Gonzaga today in the semis. The game tips at 1 pm Mountain Time and can be seen live on BYUtv. A win over the Zags and BYU will face the winner of San Francisco/San Diego for the WCC tourney title. That game is set for Tuesday with tipoff going up at 2 pm Mountain Time. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
Just as a side note on the dating sites angle, I asked my wife if I could sign up on OvertheHill.com, WarpedandWrinkled.com and FaceliftFriends.com just to see with whom they would match me. Turns out that I am a perfect match for Cher. Now my wife affectionately calls me Sonny, but Cher just never calls.
It’s a Stunt Double Spring
BYU coaches are gushing about the physical progress of Taysom Hill. His physical rehabilitation from last season’s leg injury is ahead of schedule. He is throwing the ball and moving well. If BYU’s spring football drills were a Hollywood movie, Hill would be the star.
That is why BYU has found a stunt double for Hill this spring. Coaches don’t’ want him hurt but the filming and firming up of spring drills must continue on schedule if Bronco Mendenhall’s Cougars are going to be ready for their grueling schedule this coming fall.
Good stunt doubles are hard to find. They have to look like the star, act like the star, but do it all with no ego.
Enter Stewart the Stunt Double. That would be Christian Stewart, last year’s starting quarterback for the Cougars after Hill went down with his injury.
When BYU’s only other viable option at quarterback for spring, McCoy Hill, went down the first day of practice, BYU found itself with a cast of thousands, but no star or even a B list quarterback to keep practice and drills going.
Turns out Stewart still has eligibility left for this semester only and he could actually practice this spring without running afoul of any NCAA rules and regulations.
He agreed to come out and participate. He saved the day and spring for the Cougars’ offense. Plus, he will never have to take a hit.
And if you think BYU coaches are happy about the Stewart windfall for spring, guess how the BYU receiving group is feeling.
They are ecstatic. They have a proven qb to toss them the football and now can legitimately get ready for the fall. Speaking of receivers, they could very well be the strength of this offense in the fall. Guys like Mitch Mathews, Nick Kurtz, Devon Blackmon, Terran Houk, Trey Dye and Mitchell Juergens should all get a chance to shine this spring.
Hill has looked good when throwing the ball. It is early in spring but he appears to have plenty of velocity and more touch throwing the ball. Of course the key will be how he throws in a live game situation.
In the past, if he doesn’t like what he sees on his first read, he pulls down the ball and heads for the hills. Hill heading for the hills is an exciting thing to watch, but nobody wants to watch another season ending injury this coming season.
Look for less running and more pocket presence this season from Hill.
Home and Hartford a Good Combination
At 2-10 early in the season, BYU baseball needed a break. They got it in good weather, mediocre competition and a nice 4 game winning home stand against the Hartford Hawks.
Home may very well be where the heart is, but it was also where the runs were for Mike Littlewood and his Cougars. BYU came out swinging and the scores showed it against the Hawks. The Cougars swept the series, 6-0, 8-6, 20-4 and 11-7.
BYU now moves to 6-10 on the year and will face Utah Valley on Tuesday. This game is set for the UVU diamond and will start at 6:00 pm MDT. No television is planned, but the game can be seen via streaming from the UVU website, wolverinegreen.com.
The Cougars will then open WCC play this Thursday with a three-game series against Pepperdine. All of those games will be televised live by BYUtv. See below for details on the Television Timetable.
In Softball, BYU was weathered out from action in games that were scheduled to be played in Tennessee. Next up for the Lady Cougars are five games in San Diego this week against Long Beach State, San Diego State, Baylor, Western Carolina and UConn.
In Volleyball, BYU’s No. 4 ranked team wasn’t weathered out, but they were wimped out after losing to matches to Stanford on the road. It wasn’t BYU’s finest hour on the volleyball court. Next up will be matches at Pepperdine this Friday and Saturday. If the Cougars have hopes for post season play, they need to improve their play away from the Smith Fieldhouse.
In Rugby, BYU is now rated No. 1 in the nation. That ranking came on the heels of a 32-28 win over No. 4 ranked St. Mary’s on the road two weeks ago. This past week, BYU pasted SLCC 58-10 in the home opener and on Fan Appreciation Day. The Cougars are now 7-0 on the season. Next up will be a rematch against St. Mary’s this coming Saturday, March 14 in Provo. The match will begin at 7:00 pm MDT and can be seen streaming on BYU RugbyTV.
