Cover 3 1. Ed Orgeron didn't like Matt Canada very much it seems: At least he didn't like his offense. A critical hire for Orgeron at offensive coordinator, the shifts and motions and jet sweeps that Canada employed were more slight-of-hand than Orgeron seemed to prefer. He's back in his comfort zone this fall with Steve Ensminger at coordinator, less formational gymnastics and a 1-0 start. It appears though that had Orgeron wanted to stay in house to rethink the offense, he had more than one good option. Jeff Grimes, LSU's offensive line coach from 2014-17, quietly left LSU to take the offensive coordinator job at BYU this offseason and his new unit looked great in a 28-23 upset over Arizona. What I found interesting was that it looked like Grimes may have been employing a Canada-Orgeron balance that would have been much more palatable for his old coach. He appeared to take a lot of Canada's affection for the jet sweep action with him, but he also seemed to balance that effectively with some good old fashion downhill football. He caught Arizona with tempo at times to provide even more contrast. The Grimes hire may end up saving Kilani Sitaki's job. Ensminger may bring the same life raft to Orgeron. Meanwhile, Canada may be earning himself a head job after upsetting Texas as an interim coach at Maryland. Maybe we're in for a happy ending all around.

If you have to bathe or dress your kid, comb their hair, scramble them an egg and write them a send-off letter before they can exit the car - YOU DO NOT BELONG IN THE SCHOOL DROP OFF LINE. Only people who raised their kids to jump out of the car with backpacks loaded like they are storming the beaches of Normandy while the car is at a slow roll are allowed in the drop off line. I will be giving stink eye warnings today but tomorrow I'm issuing citations. In the pickup line the same applies. Pop open the door and keep the car moving. Smart and agile kids will run along the side of the car until they can safely get in." BYU Football Bandwagon Pick Up and Drop Off Rules and Regulations The uncle of the niece wrote this today and is posting it here on his own personal newsletter. That would be me. Get on the BYU Football Bandwagon Bus now. If you are waiting to see how the Cougars do against Cal this Saturday night, you don't deserve a seat and I won't give you one. I saw enough in fall camp and it was confirmed against Arizona. If you don't think this BYU team is for real, go back and watch the UMass replay from last season. That should convince you things are different. If you wait until after the Cal contest, the bus is going to look like this: SNOOZE, YOU LOSE These guys already bought their ticket. Have you bought yours for the bandwagon? Even more importantly, have you bought your ticket for the game? BYU is basically giving them away. No frequent flyer miles needed. This is like buying a stock. There might be a correction or two, but it is apparent to me after one game that BYU football is back in a long-term uptrend. Shaky Scenarios There will be some shaky scenarios this year. A few bandwagoners may get thrown off the bus against Wisconsin and Washington, but barring a total fall off the mountain, this bus is headed for a bowl game. Consider this your school pickup protocol notice. This bus isn't slowing down, but the door is open. You will have to start running now and jump in the door before it shuts tight after another win over California this Saturday night. My Personal Cache of Caffeine Now Looks Safe You might remember this from before the season started. I'm So Convinced. That Tanner Mangum will have a big senior year and BYU will win at least 7, and more than likely 8 games, I am willing to bet my butt and beverages on it! I'm not sure of the logistics or logic of this wager, but if BYU doesn't win at least 7 football games this season, I will send all paid subscribers a can each of my personal stash of Diet Mtn Dew and Diet Dr Pepper. If they do win 7 or more games, you buy your own cans and at the designated day and time, we will all chug down one can and then happily in unison burp BYU to celebrate the return of Cougar football. That was big money at the time for a teen and taught me the financial principle of it's not what you know, but who you know. I was the head man at BYU and got up at 4 am to clean toilets as a freshman. I lasted just longer than it took for a good flush, but not much longer. I didn't get paid in Chile while serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, but my parents were sending me $43 per month through the church to keep me there. My dad was sorry to see me come home. He said it would cost more to put me back on his car insurance than what he was spending on me in Chile. I refuse to disclose how much I made or make now on the grounds that it may incriminate me with the IRS and my wife, but I will say I have never made more than the Governors of Utah, Wyoming, California, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin or any other state. Here it is again. Hopefully this will work. What I Loved About the Season Opener The best part of the game that I loved, besides the win, was the stat sheet. No, not the stats that shows how many pass completions there were or how many yards Squally Canada had (98). Those were nice, but the best part of the official stat chart is who played for BYU in the game. Below is the player participation chart for the Arizona game. Now go to the BYU roster and check on what eligibility year most of these guys are. I'll save you the work. Besides the solid game by Tanner Mangum, the running of Squally Canada and the defensive game plan by Ilaisa Tuiaki, the most exciting thing about this game was seeing just how many young contributing players in this game there really were. The present win over Arizona was great, but the future looks greater for 2019 and beyond. For example. Brady Christensen OL, RS Freshman James Empey, OL, RS Freshman Tristen Hoge, OL, RS Sophomore Matt Bushman, TE, Sophomore (touchdown catch) Isaiah Herron, CB, Freshman Dallin Holker, TE, Freshman (almost touchdown catch) Jared Kapisi, DB, Sophomore Lopini Katoa, RB, RS Freshman Lorenzo Fauatea, DL, Sophomore Khyris Tonga, DL, Sophomore Alden Tofa, DL, Freshman D'Angelo Mandell, CB, Freshman Malik Moore, CB, Freshman Skyler Southam, PK, Freshman Alden Tofa, DL, Freshman They didn't see the field, but just a friendly reminder that both true freshmen quarterbacks, Zach Wilson and Jaren Hall were both dressed and ready to go if needed. They will be needed next year and maybe this year if Mangum doesn't stay healthy. Just an unfriendly reminder, that young linebackers seeing the field against Arizona were few and very far between. BYU needs linebackers to get ready to replace the current senior crew of Takitaki, Pau'u and Anderson. Just an observation. This new Jeff Grimes designed offense is a perfect fit for BYU's talent and current roster. They are big and strong and can control the line of scrimmage. Still, can you imagine how much better this offense would be if they had a game changer at running back and wide receiver? Canada was great, but he had at several opportunities running in space to take the ball to the house but doesn't have game changer speed or athleticism. Same goes for receivers. This is a journeyman group but lacks a game breaker. The closest it comes is Aleva Hifo. That said, both Canada and Hifo received glowing reviews from me for their play against Arizona.

Here's a quick synopsis of what I saw. Squally Canada.Ran hard and downhill. Showed great ball security and a grittiness we didn't see last season. Aleva Hifo.Must have found the Lester Hayes and Fred Biletnikoff stickum jar. He didn't drop a pass thrown his way. A big-time improvement from last year. Also showed that he knew where he should be and was BYU's best chance at breaking a big one. Compared to last year, the biggest surprise of the game for me. Tanner Mangum.Solid performance that bodes well for the senior quarterback. Started a little shaky and then found his rhythm in the third quarter. Leo Durocher was dead wrong on Mangum. Good guys can finish first. Chris Wilcox.This is perception versus play. Most BYU fans perceive Wilcox to be a poor corner because he was thrown to the wolves as a freshman. His play against Arizona was spectacular. Yes, that includes saving two sure scores with pass interference calls. Ilaisa Tuiaki said there was an NFL future for Wilcox. I trust what I see on the field and the accolades from a coach good enough to design a defensive scheme that every Pac 12 school will emulate against Khalil Tate. No, not the stats that shows how many pass completions there were or how many yards Squally Canada had (98). Those were nice, but the best part of the official stat chart is who played for BYU in the game. Below is the player participation chart for the Arizona game. . Now go to the BYU roster and check on what eligibility year most of these guys are. I'll save you the work. Besides the solid game by Tanner Mangum, the running of Squally Canada and the defensive game plan by Ilaisa Tuiaki, the most exciting thing about this game was seeing just how many young contributing players in this game there really were. The present win over Arizona was great, but the future looks greater for 2019 and beyond. For example. Brady Christensen OL, RS Freshman James Empey, OL, RS Freshman Tristen Hoge, OL, RS Sophomore Matt Bushman, TE, Sophomore (touchdown catch) Isaiah Herron, CB, Freshman Dallin Holker, TE, Freshman (almost touchdown catch) Jared Kapisi, DB, Sophomore Lopini Katoa, RB, RS Freshman Lorenzo Fauatea, DL, Sophomore Khyris Tonga, DL, Sophomore Alden Tofa, DL, Freshman D'Angelo Mandell, CB, Freshman Malik Moore, CB, Freshman Skyler Southam, PK, Freshman Alden Tofa, DL, Freshman They didn't see the field, but just a friendly reminder that both true freshmen quarterbacks, Zach Wilson and Jaren Hall were both dressed and ready to go if needed. They will be needed next year and maybe this year if Mangum doesn't stay healthy. Just an unfriendly reminder, that young linebackers seeing the field against Arizona were few and very far between. BYU needs linebackers to get ready to replace the current senior crew of Takitaki, Pau'u and Anderson. Just an observation. This new Jeff Grimes designed offense is a perfect fit for BYU's talent and current roster. They are big and strong and can control the line of scrimmage. Still, can you imagine how much better this offense would be if they had a game changer at running back and wide receiver? Canada was great, but he had at several opportunities running in space to take the ball to the house but doesn't have game changer speed or athleticism. Same goes for receivers. This is a journeyman group but lacks a game breaker. The closest it comes is Aleva Hifo. That said, both Canada and Hifo received glowing reviews from me for their play against Arizona. Here's a quick synopsis of what I saw. Squally Canada.Ran hard and downhill. Showed great ball security and a grittiness we didn't see last season. Aleva Hifo.Must have found the Lester Hayes and Fred Biletnikoff stickum jar. He didn't drop a pass thrown his way. A big-time improvement from last year. Also showed that he knew where he should be and was BYU's best chance at breaking a big one. Compared to last year, the biggest surprise of the game for me. Tanner Mangum.Solid performance that bodes well for the senior quarterback. Started a little shaky and then found his rhythm in the third quarter. Leo Durocher was dead wrong on Mangum. Good guys can finish first. Chris Wilcox.This is perception versus play. Most BYU fans perceive Wilcox to be a poor corner because he was thrown to the wolves as a freshman. His play against Arizona was spectacular. Yes, that includes saving two sure scores with pass interference calls. Ilaisa Tuiaki said there was an NFL future for Wilcox. I trust what I see on the field and the accolades from a coach good enough to design a defensive scheme that every Pac 12 school will emulate against Khalil Tate. That's good enough for me and it certainly is good enough for BYU football to have Wilcox on the roster. No Time to Rewatch Game?
