Most Cougar fans are pinning the loss on two particular plays. The Cougars had the ball in UCLA territory and both times were driving for a clinching touchdown in the fourth quarter. Both times, on second and third and long, BYU's offensive brain trust opted for a run up the gut instead of putting the ball in Tanner Mangum's hand and giving him a chance to make some magic happen. BYU settled for a field goal on the first and ended up throwing a game clinching interception on the last. Those were indeed game changing plays, but not the two plays to which I refer. In my opinion, the two plays that cost BYU this game occurred on the second play from scrimmage in the second half at Nebraska. In case you forgot, that was when Travis Tuiloma suffered a knee injury that was projected to keep him out of action for 4 to 6 weeks. In my opinion, had Tuiloma been available, UCLA still would have rushed the ball for 200 yards against the Cougars, but they wouldn't have gashed BYU like they did on their last two scoring drives. The earliest we could see Tuiloma back, in my opinion, would be against East Carolina for homecoming on October 10. The other play occurred in the third quarter on November 1, 2014 in Murfreesboro, TN against Middle Tennessee State. That is when Jamaal Williams ran a wheel route out of the backfield and caught a clutch pass from Christian Stewart. Unfortunately, he also tore his knee and missed the rest of the season. He is also missing this year due to ramifications from that injury. BYU has been one running back short since that play occurred. It appeared that the missing running back needed would be supplied by Taysom Hill with his talented feet, but of course, there were two plays in the first and second half against Nebraska that removed him from the Cougar offensive picture. Fickle And finally, BYU also lost this game due to the very nature of college football. Since 1922, when BYU started playing football, the Cougars have had just 1 undefeated season. That was in 1984 when Robbie Bosco led BYU to a 12-0 record and a national championship. Because of the fickleness of college football, I don't expect any major team in contention for the national title to get through the season without a loss. An undefeated football team at the FBS level is an anomaly, not the norm. So let's talk about what the UCLA game showed us in terms of where BYU is currently as a program. Especially coming off three consecutive 8-5 seasons. Bronco Mendenhall has apparently fixed most of the flaws of those three ordinary years. Quarterback.As long as Taysom Hill was healthy, BYU was very, very good at quarterback. With Tanner Mangum, BYU is still very, very good, barring an injury and the lure of an early entry into the NFL draft. Running Backs.This year was almost a disaster until Adam Hine started running like Adam Timo did in high school. He ran for a buck 49 (149 yards) on 23 carries. Next to Mangum and Travis Tuiloma, in my book, Hine is currently the third most valuable player on this team. He will get some help shortly when Algie Brown and Francis Bernard are cleared to play due to current injuries. Watch for the true freshman Bernard to open some eyes. Those same eyes should be popping next season with the return of Jamaal Williams and Squally Canada to active status. You know about Williams. Canada has been a terror on the scout team while sitting out the mandatory transfer year from Washington State. Defensive back coach Nick Howell tweeted last week that Canada was better than any back the defense had faced against Nebraska or Boise State. Good thing that tweet didn't come after the UCLA game and the show put on by Paul Perkins. Just to throw a little gasoline on the future of running backs at BYU, there is a 50-50 chance that Charles West, the troubled, but talented high school running back out of Coppell, Texas could still show up on campus in January. We will see. Offensive Line.Since the return of Robert Anae and the hire of Garett Tujague BYU appears to have made great strides in improving the offensive line. They are tougher, meaner and playing well. They aren't perfect, but there has been a very noticeable improvement and the future looks bright. The only guy happier than me would be Tanner Mangum. Wide Receivers.This is a good and functional group. I still stand by what I said preseason. There are no legit NFL prospects at receiver on this team. BYU has gone big and there are plenty of bigs in the pipeline. The best thing this group has going for them now is Mangum. He is finding the open guy and hitting them on time. Defensive Backfield.In my opinion, this is the most improved group. They have no shut down super star, but they are playing well. When is the last time you heard that about BYU defensive backs? Kai Nacua is getting plenty of pub and making plays, but I think Michael Davis has improved enough to have played himself into a potential NFL draft pick. Give him another year and look for him to go in the late rounds of the 2017 draft. He has size and speed and now has shown that he can use those assets in making plays. For the first time in years, BYU appears to have a decent pipeline of talented db's just waiting their turns to play and produce beginning next season. Linebackers.Harvey Langi had a break out game against UCLA. As soon has he can consistently wrap up and quit whiffing on tackles he looks like a super star in the making. BYU has outside talent in Fred Warner and Sione Takitaki. My pick for a guy to keep your eyes on for the future is Phillip Amone. All he does is make plays and tackles. Defensive Line.BYU has had some good defensive linemen in the last 5 years, but most of the best of that group were accidents. Ziggy Ansah fell into BYU's lap. Same for Hebron Fangupo. They are the only BYU defensive linemen that are currently on NFL rosters. BYU's best success as come at nose guard with guys like Eathyn Manumaleuna and currently Travis Tuiloma. The bottom line on this group is that BYU appears to have seriously whiffed in recruiting to this position in the last several years. In my opinion, this is the chink in BYU's future national stage armor. There is a reason that Bronco has been using his "wildcat" blitzing scheme the last two games. Without Tuiloma, he doesn't have the personnel up front to hold up against good FBS teams. I believe the saying is "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with blitzes." BYU a 4 Point Dog Michigan Up Next.Big Game in Big House I'm no football coach or TV analyst and I haven't stayed in a Holiday Inn recently, but I do have some ideas on how Michigan and Jim Harbaugh are going to play BYU when the Cougars make their first football appearance ever in Ann Arbor. BYU is certainly no Bo-Diddley Tech when it comes to football, but expect Harbaugh to employ the Bo-Woodley Tech approach to beating BYU. I expect Michigan to close down their play book and keep only the pages written by Bo Schembechler and Woody Hayes. In case you haven't studied those pages penned by the two legendary Big 10 coaches, it consists of three yards and a cloud of dust and controlling the line of scrimmage. That's where this game will be played. Don't expect a lot of rushing success from BYU and do expect Michigan to be productive doing what they do best.run the ball. That means that BYU will have do what they do best. Throw the ball. Expect a smash-mouth approach from Michigan. Also expect Michigan to experience an open-mouthed bewilderment at how good Tanner Mangum and the BYU passing game really is. Michigan will try to make this game a street fight with knives. As Harrison Ford showed as Indiana Jones in "Raiders of the Lost Ark", a gun is not a bad option <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I_Ds2ytz4o> in such a conflict. As long as BYU has Tanner Mangum slinging bullets down field, BYU will always be in this knife fight. I call it BYU 31 Michigan 24. BYU Football Loads up on Commitments Last Week What was predicted last week came to fruition when Troy Warner, the younger brother of current Cougar Fred Warner, said he would sign with BYU and enroll in school in Provo in January. He was also joined in the BYU haul by Keaton Torre, a QB from Bingham HS and Max Tooley from Bountiful HS in Utah. Here is the latest list of current BYU football commits. Dear Cougar Sportsline Subscriber, The last two weeks, I have had enough emails and phone calls from random subscribers informing me that they did not get their newsletter on Monday, that I probably need to address the issue. I HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED! ( By some of the email programs that you are using) Because I use a bulk mail program to send out the letter, some email services that subscribers use automatically consider the letter as junk or spam. Consequently, they randomly will put the letter in your spam or junk email boxes. If you randomly don't get the letter, I suggest the first place you look is in those two mail boxes of the program you use for your email. Almost all the time, that is where you will find the missing letter. Occasionally, the letter will also randomly be sent to spam or junk mailboxes of subscribers if there are filters that a subscriber's email provider uses to prevent profane or inappropriate language. This week I actually used the word "groin". That will also randomly suspend me and send me to some of your email spam or junk boxes. I will try to clean up the profane language and instead of "groin" use "below the belt" instead. I will not, however, change how I send out the letter with a bulk mail program. I don't have the time to individually send to each email address in my data base. That would also be considered a pain in the "below the belt". THERE IS A SOLUTION (99% OF THE TIME) Simply add my email address, hbarnett(a)fiber.net <mailto:hbarnett@fiber.net> to your safe sender list. All email programs have some sort of safe sender provision that will allow you to signify from whom you want emails, regardless of their content, length or language, such as groin. My experience has been that this procedure fixes all delivery problems 99% of the time. Originally out of the Texas High School ranks (Judson HS, San Antonio), he went on to play in the NFL after leaving Provo. He is now a well know pastor and Christian author based out of North Carolina. He was brought back on campus by BYU after a long absence and featured on BYUs football media day in late June. He was also invited to address the BYU football team before he returned home. His remarks were memorable. If you havent heard or seen them, take a listen. He used to say all the time, Arnett, you got no guts. If you had enough guts, you could knock down that telephone pole. I used to say (to myself and under my breath) Coach, youre crazy. I may not have guts, but you got no brains. After listening to the passionate plea of Derwin Gray to the BYU football team, every morning I now get up and go outside and hit the telephone pole in front of my house. Every morning my wife says out loud, Arnett, you certainly got a gut, but no brain. Who knows how this new 2015 edition of BYU football will end. It may end in December or maybe in early January with a bowl game. But so far the first two chapters have been very entertaining and riveting. Heres a peek at a few of the exclamation points made in BYUs 35-24 win over Boise State last Saturday. !!!!You can take the defensive coach out of New Mexico, but those roots will stay with him forever. The year was 1980. It was my first year of publishing this newsletter. I traveled with a friend to Albuquerque for the opening game of the season. BYU was coming off an 11-1 record in 1979 with the only loss at the hands of Indiana in the Holiday Bowl. Plus BYU had Jim McMahon. The Cougars were going to kill the Lobos. Unfortunately UNM had a new head coach in Joe Morrison and a new defensive coordinator who had followed Morrison from their previous jobs at Tennessee-Chattanooga. His name was Joe Lee Dunn. He blitzed every down and never had a defensive lineman with his hand on the ground at the line of scrimmage. The Lobos beat BYU 25-21. It was the Cougars only loss. They then ran the table and beat SMU in the Miracle Bowl to finish 12-1. Broadcasters like to say JLD when mentioning Jherremya Leuta-Douyere, the very good BYU linebacker, as he is involved in a play. They should save the JLD (Joe Lee Dunn) for Broncos defense he unveiled in the second half against Boise State. Or they could call it NHD (No Hands Down). Hands down, it was the play of the BYU defense that gave the Cougars their second win of the season. Joe Lee Dunn would be proud. Despite the significant contribution of MM (Mangums Magic) and the BYU offense, it was the Defensive MM (Managed Mayhem) in the game that made the difference. Mendenhall, in his first decade as the head coach of BYU, was satisfied with just a few sentences and slogans to define BYU football and himself to the public. It turns out that Mendenhall is not only an accomplished defensive coach, he actually can write a pretty convincing and good story about himself. It doesnt hurt, however, that he finally has a more athletic defensive backfield to protect his back and let him unleash the mayhem up front at the line of scrimmage. Despite what the average fan thinks, Mendenhall actually has his most athletic group of cornerbacks since coming to Provo. Just because he still has then play with a 10 yard cushion, trust him, he knows what he is doing. So does Kai Nacua. !!! The junior safetys grammatical input to the BYU/BSU story included an ellipsis. Three dots. One for each interception he made in the game. His exclamation point came when his third pick was taken to the house and closed the gate on the Broncos. Speaking of grammar, Michael Wadsworth has emerged as a nice safety conjunction to Nacua. He led BYU in tackles with 11 against BSU. His story is a long time coming. He was turned down by BYU out of high school, signed with Hawaii, served an LDS mission and was denied a request from Hawaii to transfer to Provo. He came anyway and has paid his dues and own tuition and then some. His play against Nebraska in the second half earned him earned him some verbiage in this current defensive narrative. !!!Last year and in fall camp the best way to describe Harvey Langi was Big Hat, No Cattle. He certainly looked the part of a good middle linebacker, but his production didnt match his hype. Against Boise, he brought some sacks and steers to match his sombrero. His play was outstanding and he should only get better. !!!Warning: Parental Guidance is advised for the following paragraph unless you are a Basque sheepherder or have worked at a squeeze chute in a feed lot. Speaking of sacks and steers, Ului Lapuaho, BYUs offensive lineman, is now famous on You Tube <http://www.si.com/college-football/2015/09/13/byu-vs-boise-state-groin-punc h-watch-video> for his tutorial on how to turn a BSU Bronco into a steer. Because groin gate is not yet universally accepted grammatically or on the gridiron, his sentence may ultimately have to be edited out of the current story. Look for Bronco to possibly punish Lapuaho by sentencing him to 150 hours of community chute service at a feed lot in Payson. !!!Another Warning: The following sentence broadcast in the waning moments of ESPNs coverage of the BSU/BYU game could be hazardous to your health and promote addictive tendencies for BYU football fans. Pressure from behindMangum flips it into the end zoneWeve seen this before. Touchdown BYU! The following video <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQG5ztC1gnU> illustrates just how addictive Mangum Mania can become. !!!Mitchell Juergens wrote his story in the Boise game with absolute possessives. His late game catch was his big and game clinching moment. His 4 catches for 172 yards and 2 touchdowns was better than any of his, hers, theirs or yours. Devon Blackmon came in a close second however. The senior wide outs sentence was well written with 6 catches for 105 yards. It included a nice exclamation point with a 70-yard catch and run. !!!Adam Hine rushed for 93 yards and one touchdown against Boise State. He didnt make his nice ground game showing until BYU got the horses in front of the ball carrying cart. The BYU rush game story Saturday night was penned jointly by Hine and the Cougar offensive line. Once the Cougars coaches got their blocking assignments corrected and coordinated with the offensive line, Hine hit high gear. !!!And one more selfish sentence. I got no guts, I got no money, I got no talent, but I got the final score exactly right in last weeks issue. BYU 35 BSU 24. As my good friend always says about marriage, Id rather be happy than right. Last week, BYU made me both happy and right. Balanced Bruins More than Likely to Burst BYUs Balloon It will take more than magic for BYU to come away from Pasadena and the Rose Bowl next Saturday against UCLA with a win. It will take Broncos best defensive game plan and Robert Anaes best offensive schemes, to stay competitive with the Bruins. This will be the most athletic and talented team the Cougars will face this season. They are balanced on offense and averaging over 500 yards per game. They can throw it with true freshman Josh Rosen. They can run it with Paul Perkins averaging over 100 yards per game. Defensively, they will make Boise States corners look slow and ordinary. The Bruins are the real deal. They can play and want to show BYU their play making abilities on both sides of the ball. Las Vegas odds makers agree. They have the Bruins established as a 16 ½ point favorite. That said, I think BYU has a punchers chance here. I expect the Cougars to be able to move the ball. I dont see a lot of touchdowns, but I expect at least 3-4 field goals from Trevor Samson. Defensively, BYU will need their new pressure package to try and get in Rosens face. They will have to, because you can be sure UCLAs defense will be in Tanner Mangums face. We are still two weeks away at least before we can really determine, which college teams are contenders and pretenders. Both teams are 2-0, but that means nothing until mid-season when we will really know how good or how bad Nebraska, Boise State, Virginia and UNLV really are. I still think BYU is pretty good, but not quite good enough to beat UCLA. I call it UCLA 27 BYU 24 Names and Games Remember Trent Hosick? He was the Missouri transfer who played last year at Arizona Western in Yuma. At one time he committed to BYU. He reneged on his commitment to shop around. He ended up at Yuma again and started the season at QB for the Matadors. Last Saturday he was benched in favor of another QB as Snow College routed AWC 35-10. Jonah Trinnaman, the current BYU commit and wide receiver from Snow, had a big game. He ran it in from 9 yards out on a fly sweep and also caught a 58-yard touchdown bomb for his second score of the game. BYU had a boatload of football and basketball recruits on campus for the Boise State game. Both programs came away with verbal commits. In football, Keaton Torre, the 6-3 quarterback from Bingham HS, committed to Bronco Mendenhall while 6-6 power forward, Yoeli Childs, also from Bingham HS, said that he would sign with the Cougars in November. Torre played last season in Oklahoma and had committed to Louisville before his father was transferred to Utah for work earlier this year. He also had recruiting interest from the Oklahoma schools, Kansas, Purdue, Illinois and Colorado. Other football recruits on campus for a visit last week were Troy Warner, the younger brother of Fred Warner. I stick to what I said last week. Next season will be a Warner Brothers production. He will sign with the Cougars. Other underclassmen were also in for Dave Rose and took in the football game. They included Kolby Lee, a 6-8 post from Rocky Mountain HS in Meridian, ID; Jaxon Brenchley, a 6-4 guard from Mountain Crest HS in Utah and Trevor Knell, another 6-4 guard from Woods Cross HS. The BYU women keep winning. In volleyball, the Lady Cougars took two matches from Oregon State this past week. BYU is currently ranked No. 9 in the nation. They are currently 8-1 on the year. Next up will be Utah on Thursday in Salt Lake In soccer, BYU is now rated No. 5 in the national poll. They are currently 6-1 on the season. The only loss came at Stanford. It was a 1-0 loss to the No. 2 ranked Cardinal. Next up will be Oregon State in Provo this Thursday.
