That shouldnt be confused with the more prestigious Rhodes Scholar. After scoring the same amount of points that BYU did against ECU in securing their fourth win of the season, the 45 points I scored on a Political Science final exam years ago, had BYU academics almost telling me to hit the road and return to the more compatible academic setting of Palo Verde College in Blythe, California. Because of my less than sterling academic performance in that class, to this day, I still consider myself a Political Science Nephite (I actually also struggled academically in English and Book of Mormon at BYU and still get Neophyte and Nephite confused). I also have the same difficulty distinguishing between Rhodes Scholars and Rhodes Bake-n-Serve Bread. I cant remember which one is crusty when overcooked or over educated If you are a Rhodes Scholar and reading this, I apologize. But arent you ashamed of yourself and an Oxford Education for reading a rag like Cougar Sportsline? Shame is subjective. I never played college football, but I have no shame in doing what every other sports media Nephite-never-played-the-game guy does when they give out grades in evaluating BYUs performance after every football game. So here is my non-Oxford objective (sorta) but over cooked and under thought evaluations and grades. Scoreboard: A+I dont care how you get there. Whether you over schedule, under schedule, do some serious can kicking or barely survive because of luck or injuries, on either sideline, good coaching or bad coaching, on either sideline, a win is a win. You dont give them back and you dont look back. BYUs 45-38 win over East Carolina was a coulda, shoulda, woulda, game that was in the end a win. Tanner Mangum: BYeah, I know all about the late game heroics and the superb passing numbers like completing 24 of 33 passes for 332 yards and 3 touchdowns. The extra credit project of returning to the game late despite an injured right hamstring was very good, and under normal circumstances, would have got the guy an A. But Im grading on the curve. As good as Mangums performance was, it wont be his best. The best is yet to come. If you dont believe that, I suggest you go back and watch the ESPNU broadcast of the game on replay. Pay close attention to what Dan Hawkins, the former Boise State and Colorado head coach had to say about Mangum. You would have thought he was Mangums agent or wants to be his agent. He absolutely gushed about Mangums abilities and his upside. He said that BYU has had some great quarterbacks in the past, but BYU football fans should buckle up for the exciting ride they are going to have with the kid from Eagle, Idaho. As far as Hawkins as a commentator, I give him an A-. He was good, knowledgeable and not annoying like some. Had he yelled at the top of his lungs, Its Division I football I would have given him an A. Beau Hoge: ADespite the fact that he was breathing heavily trying to catch his breath before every play and despite the deer in the headlights look in his eyes, I like this kids play and potential. Give him some mop up action when the game is not on the line and Hoge should be a very serviceable backup to Mangum, this season and beyond. He is athletic enough and has a good enough arm to help BYU wins some games. Algie Brown: A, B, C and DPut another 30 pounds on this guy, and make him a middle linebacker and he could have an NFL shot. This guy runs to contact so I give him a C as a potential play for pay linebacker prospect. I give him an A for the two fourth down conversions he made. It saved the game. I give him a D for the two fumbles and dropped pass from Hoge. Add it all up and throw in the three touchdowns, one a 53 yarder, and Brown, with his 134 yard night on 24 carries was a solid B+ performer against ECU. Devon Blackmon: AI give him a top grade, not because he is a game-breaking- play- making machine, but because of his immense improvement from last season to this year. It is a night and day performance. The mid-day sun was certainly shining on Blackmon Saturday night. He had 9 catches for 142 yards. He still is looking for the end zone and his first touchdown as a BYU Cougar. BYU Secondary: IncompleteTruancy and a trip to the School Nurses office almost cost BYU this game. Those that stayed in school, got a C. They were average. Had back up corners Michael Shelton and Jordan Preator not been suspended by Bronco Mendenhall for this game for a violation of team rules, and had Micah Hanneman not gone to the Nurses office because of an injury in the second half, ECUs QB grade of A- would have more likely been a B- if Mendenhall had a full classroom of defensive backs for the second half of this contest. Linebackers: A- & B: BYU is now getting some playmaking from its outside linebackers that matches the headlines and hype that Fred Warner and Sione Takitaki generated when they were recruited to Provo. Both guys are disrupters and play makers. I give both A- for their performances against the Pirates of ECU. The Cougars are getting adequate inside linebacker play, and hopefully that will improve when another disruptor, Harvey Langi, returns from injury. Defensive Line and Offensive Line: Honorary AsIf universities can give honorary degrees, I can give honorary As to any player on the Cougar roster that plays on the line of scrimmage. Only real men need apply. The beating and punishment given out and received at the line of scrimmage deserves the highest grade fans can give. Still, its hard to see anybody on the line of scrimmage taking the Road Scholarship to the next level of play in the NFL. I give this group a solid B. Coaching and Kicking: A & BNo Guts, no Glory. Bronco Mendenhall has come a long way from icing the kicker in a PAT attempt to attempting two fourth and ones against East Carolina. Both worked. So did the fake punt and the punt block. Give Mendenhall an A for his out of the box thinking. Give the special teams and kicking game a C. The blocked punt and Jonny Linehans fake punt for a first down is worth an A. The blocked punt put on BYU was due to poor execution was worth a C. Average for kicking game is B. Mangum Medicine Dr. Oz is busy, So Heres the Best Medical Advice I Can Give for a Strained or Pulled Hamstring I just checked the odds and opening line in Las Vegas for this Fridays game against Cincinnati. Strained hamstring opened as an 8 ½ point favorite over torn meniscus and 38 point favorite over a Lisfranc. Im laying the points and taking Tanner Mangums strained hamstring recovering and healing enough for him to play this Friday against Cincinnation two conditions. It actually is a strained hamstring and nothing worse and Mangum uses the CP Protocol in his approach to recovery and rehab. CP stands for cow pie. If you apply a liberal amount of CP on your hamstring and then wrap it with an ACE bandage and keep it in place for the entire week, it will insure that nobody, especially media, will bother or bug you while your body naturally recovers. Beginning today, the most asked question on BYUs campus will not be Is he single but Is he healthy. Bronco Mendenhall will give a preliminary prognosis this morning in his weekly press briefing. Hopefully, he will have health reports also on Ului Lapuaho and Micah Hanneman. And a nice report on violation of team rules will be forthcoming on Michael Shelton and Jordan Preator. Cincinnati has had two weeks to get ready for BYU and the game this Friday night in LaVell Edwards Stadium. BYU now has 5 days to prepare. Not to be the bearer of Cow Pieish news on the BYU football parade, but Nate Austin also had hamstring issues that kept him from playing basketball the entire season last season. The difference, of course, is that his hamstring was torn, not strained or pulled. The bottom line is this. BYU can beat Cincinnati even if Ului Lapuaho and Micah Hanneman cant play against the Bearcats. BYU cant beat UC, however, if Mangum doesnt play. This gives new meaning to the catch phrase Mangum Miracle. In a hopeful precedent, Terenn Houk was still in a walking boot Saturday afternoon entering the stadium. Nobody thought he would play, but he did. Without Mangum, BYUs running game is not good enough to beat the Bearcats. With Mangum, even at 70 percent, the BYU passing game is good enough to secure the win provided the offensive line and schemes put together by Robert Anae can keep the Idaho signal caller up right and untouched. Im optimistic that the CP (can also stand for Constant Prayers) treatment program, or some other proven protocol for Mangums hamstring will work. I call it BYU 28 UC 21. Fluff and Stuff Im always entertained by the television commercials for FarmersOnly.com and Match.com. I am even more intrigued by the matrimonial results compiled by the fictional website I call CougarCouples.com. Here are a few Cougar athlete couples that have made matches and married within the BYU athletic family. Yeah, I know that sounds weird, but hey, my uncle married my cousin (My mothers brother married my dads niece). Here is my unofficial list of BYU inter-squad athletic marriages. Hopefully I wont have to report on any intra-squad marriages except for those on the track team which is comprised of both genders. Kyle Collinsworth (basketball) married Shea Martinez (track) Tyler Haws (basketball) married Summer Raymond (gymnastics) Adam Pulshiper (football) married Makenzie Morrison (basketball) Jonny Linehan (rugby and football) married Marisa Nimmer (Soccer) Bronson Kaufusi (football) married Hilary Smith (Soccer) Andy Isom (baseball) married Taylor Campbell (Soccer) The Womens soccer team is still the dominant team in the WCC. The Lady Cougars are currently 3-0 in league play with wins over Gonzaga and Portland on the road and a home win over San Diego. Next up will be Pacific in Provo. Overall the Cougars are 11-1-1. They are currently the No. 5 ranked team in the country. In womens volleyball, the Cougars are currently tied for the lead atop WCC standings with Santa Clara and San Diego at 5-1. Santa Clara beat BYU in California and BYU beat San Diego last week in San Diego. Overall the Lady Cougars are 15-2 on the year and ranked 15th in the nation. I am, however, looking forward to the BYU-Utah football game next year in Salt Lake City. Cal proved a good quarterback can move the ball on the Utes. BYU has a great quarterback. Plus Utah will lose their running back to the NFL and BYU will be back in the running back business with Jamaal Williams, Squally Canada and Charles West all up and running. Throw in a game breaker wide receiver with the arrival of Snow Juco transfer Jonah Trinnaman. He had a big time outing against Phoenix College two weeks ago with a 200 plus yard receiving game. Count me in as anxiously awaiting this next Utah-BYU game set for September 10 in Salt Lake. Just a small caveat on the next great juco receiver at BYU. It was just two years ago that Nick Kurtz was the next great juco receiver. He has helped, but he is far from dazzling in his early season play. In basketball, the early call from me is that this will be another Dave Rose Shoot and Scoot team. He has three point shooters galore. There wont be enough basketballs to go around. He will push the tempo and get out in the open court. The question will be: Can this team shoot the three and play some D? The preseason chatter is how this team will be much, much, better defensively. They certainly will be bigger inside and be a better rebounding team, but just how much better they will be defensively remains to be seen, in my opinion. None of those questions will really be answered until Dec. 2 when the Cougars face Utah in Salt Lake City. Thats when we will know the answer to this years true or false question. Can BYU really shoot the 3 and really play some D? Judges give points based on their assessment of the program as a whole: of its composition, originality, and use of ice, and of the skater's carriage, style, and expression of the music chosen. In football, it's all about scoreboard. The team with the most points posted, regardless of style, sloppy ice, carriage or carnage wins the game. BYU had scoreboard against UConn last Friday night in LaVell Edwards. The final was 30-13. The cumulative total has BYU now at 3-2 on the year. For three quarters, BYU in general and Tanner Mangum in particular, were putting up good numbers statistically, but the ice was still bumpy with the score tied at 10 all going into the final quarter. BYU had plenty of style points and passing yardage, but the game was still in doubt. Tanner Mangum, completed his show by completing 35 of 53 attempts for 365 yards and two touchdowns that were matched by two interceptions. His QB rating for the game was 128.79, BYU, as a team ended up with 539 yards of total offense, but the skating and sledding was still questionable with choppy ice heading into the final quarter. Thank goodness for the defensive Zamboni machine of Bronco Mendenhall. The Cougar defense made the big yardage and measly scoring hold up until the offense could get its double salchow scoring in gear in the final 15 minutes. It was the zip, zap, Zamboni play of Bronson Kaufusi and his interception that cleaned up this game for the Cougars. Defensively, BYU held the Huskies to 230 yards of offense. For the year, Mangum has now completed 101 of 167 throws for 6 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He is completing 60.5 percent of his throws and has 1084 yards passing. His overall quarterback rating is currently 120.87. In rushing, BYU is currently ranked 114th out of 127 teams in grinding out yardage on the ground. The Cougars are averaging 117 yards per game. UConn is ranked 120th in the nation packing the football with only 99 yards per outing. A permanent fix for the BYU running game probably won't be available until next season. Until then, Mangum will keep sliding as instructed instead of taking hits because without him, the Cougars can't throw it and the running game isn't good enough for BYU to win football games with its defense only. If you are waiting for the BYU offense to look like Baylor's or TCU's, you are going to be disappointed this season. If you are waiting for the BYU defense to look like Michigan's or Utah's, you are also going to be disappointed. But if you are waiting for BYU to keep winning football games, you have come to the right team. If you are looking for them to rack up style points while winning, buy a pair of figure skates and a French judge to put in your pocket. Style points will be down the road, with experience for Mangum to go along with his talent, an improved offensive line and running backs that can actually run the ball effectively and consistently. It's never too early to say wait until next year, but while you do, watch the wins continue to pile up. Piling up and On One of those wins to add to the pile will be against East Carolina this Saturday in Provo. The Pirates are certainly very athletic on both sides of the ball. They played Florida tough in the Swamp and had a chance to win that game earlier this year. They beat Virginia Tech in Greenville and smothered SMU in Dallas last week. This is a very good football team. News Flash! So is BYU, especially if they get a few key guys like Harvey Langi and Travis Tuiloma back on the field on defense. As good as ECU is, they haven't played a quarterback like Mangum. They have played teams with much better receivers and running backs than BYU has, but they haven't faced a guy, even as inexperienced as he is, that can make all the throws and defenses pay if they can't pressure him. Look for Ruffin McNeil, ECU's head coach, to go that route. He is going to get after Mangum by bringing people, lots of them and often. If they don't get home, BYU will light up the scoreboard. It doesn't hurt ECU, either, that McNeil is very, very familiar with Robert Anae, BYU's offensive coordinator. They were on the same staff of Mike Leach at Texas Tech for multiple years. I like BYU here, even more than the 8 point favorite that Las Vegas makes BYU. I call it BYU 41, ECU 21. Get Off the Road Old Man! I'm not a patient driver. I've been known to yell out loud while driving behind an elderly motorist impeding my preferred progress, "Get off the road old man!" I try not to use that phrase when traveling with my wife because she almost always reprimands me with the following retort: "HB, you're an old man. Why don't you get off the road?" I admit, my driving probably also elicits similar comments from those in the same lane following behind me. The funny thing is that I seem to attract drivers who are all deaf. I can never see their lips move, but I always recognize the sign language they use. I was watching an ecclesiastical television show (My wife tells me that correct term is General Conference) yesterday afternoon and heard "Geronimo" used from the pulpit. Again, my good wife kindly corrected me and told me the word used was Gerontocracy. I knew that Geronimo was a Chiricahua Chieftain, and I was pretty sure I knew the meaning of Gerontocracy. To be sure, I looked it up and here is what it said: Gerontocracy is a form of oligarchical rule in which an entity is ruled by leaders who are significantly older than most of the adult population. To be clear, I fully support the Gerontocracy of the institution that was presenting the ecclesiastical television show which I was watching yesterday. I wasn't so clear, however, on what Oligarchy meant. I looked it up. Oligarchy: a country, business, etc., that is controlled by a small group of people. : the people that control a country, business, etc. Hey, I love it when they talk about me. I'm definitely gerontocracy challenged and my one-man business of Cougar Sportsline is as oligarchical as it comes. So. Consider this the "oligarchical get off the road" excursion of an old man. The chances of BYU ever winning a national title in football or basketball in the next thirty years are about as good as me ever using the terms "Geronimo or Geriatrics" in public from the pulpit at the LDS Conference Center. It isn't happening. What is happening, however, is that BYU football and basketball are going to win enough games and present enough personalities to the national media to favorably represent the LDS Church. This season is a great example of why BYU athletics is doing exactly what the Church wants. Turns out that Nebraska and UCLA are not as good as they were portrayed in the early part of the season. Doesn't matter. They are national brands and BYU played well against those brands. The media is always looking for an angle or an anomaly. BYU provides both. They are the ultimate anomaly. They can occasionally beat the big boys, with an honor code, with returned missionaries and with players that have nice stories to tell. If you wonder why the national media jumped all over Tanner Mangum and flooded BYU with interview requests, and if you wonder why Taysom Hill was the same last season before his injury, it's not hard to figure out. They can complete a sentence, are articulate and have a personal story to tell in a football context. Those stories reflect well on them individually, their families and the LDS Church. Sure there are other LDS college athletes that choose not to attend BYU that have stories to tell, but those stories will never match up to those told by BYU athletes, because they are just part of the national football factory story. Their stories are not anomalies, just more of the same, even if they are great LDS returned missionaries. BYU's backdrop promotes off the beaten path coverage from the media. That is why I always shirk my shoulders when an LDS athlete says that he will do more for the LDS Church by letting his talents speak for themselves in a non BYU setting. Name me one LDS college athlete that has ever generated as much national attention for the LDS Church that athletes at BYU do? There will be local coverage and attention paid to those non BYU, but LDS athletes in the local Utah market, but national coverage and attention doesn't come unless the anomaly angle is played because of BYU winning and how they do it and with whom they do it. You can say what you want about Bronco Mendenhall (And I've said plenty that is negative), but he is the ultimate anomaly when it comes to coaching and the LDS Church angle. He may not win as many football games as fans want, but he is doing exactly what the LDS Church wants. They want their story told. I'm well aware of the fact that there are those who think Bronco and his program need to make way for another coach. Hey I'm old, but not dead yet. I occasionally read BYU related sports message boards. It all sounds familiar. I used to be one of those guys who wanted to fire LaVell Edwards and Norm Chow every time they lost a football game. I was sure there were better LDS coaches out there. I know there are those who think there must be a high school coach or juco coach out there somewhere who is innovative, bright, ambitious and anxious to be the next BYU coach. Notre Dame thought that once, when they hired Gerry Faust. There is usually a good reason high school and juco coaches are still at high schools and junior colleges. At this point I'm sure there are multiple subscribers who want to get behind me in their cars on the freeway and practice their sign language skills. To appease those progressive thinkers and national title dreamers, here is a suggestion that would not only rock the anomaly and Church angles in bringing national attention, but it would crash the glass ceiling of Mormon feminists everywhere. Hire Sherry Dew as the next head BYU football coach. The Church and BYU wouldn't be able to count the national satellite trucks parked at the SAB if that announcement ever happened. Yes, it may seem farfetched, but Dew does have skills. She is a proven manager. She would be great at pre game firesides and she is more LaVell Edwards than Gary Crowton. Look, Mitt Romney was not a proven expert on running the Olympics, but he was a proven manager. So is Dew. She just needs to hire good offensive and defensive coordinators and a great Human Resource manager to handle recruiting. If they don't produce, you make changes. That is what all great managers do in business, Church and life and especially football. BYU has men as head coaches for women sports. What about a women as head coach at a men's sport. And what if she actually won games along with generating the most interest ever nationally in BYU football. And for those who think that it is archaic for BYU to have to have an active LDS female member serve as their head coach in football and basketball, who do you want? Nancy Pelosi? Okay, that's enough of Sherry and my excessive drinking of Mountain Dew for this morning, but the reality of BYU football, basketball and all Cougar Sports programs is that the so-called gerontocracy of the LDS Church is getting exactly what they want from the BYU athletic department. It is my opinion that the sooner we as BYU fans yell Geronimo as we jump from the high cliffs of expectations and get in line with the reality of BYU sports, the happier we will be. Hey, I've been there when we should have fired every coach who didn't win every game. Heck, I thought coaches should have been fired because they didn't beat teams by enough points. There weren't chat rooms and message boards years ago, but I had my own. It was called Cougar Sportsline. Heck, I've had hate mail, once even from a lower echelon General Authority, and I'm still on board with the oligarchy. That is why a few sign language symbols on the road doesn't deter my driving. A bad play call, closer than expected win or an expected loss also doesn't affect my being a fan of BYU. That's my old man oligarchy and getting gray gerontology story and I'm sticking to it.
