Poet and bass player HaroldCarr will perform along with guitarist Geoffrey Miller at the Salt Lake PublicLibrary Main Branch on Wednesday May 11th at 7:00 as part of the City ArtReading Series. Poet/bassist Harold Carr has performed and recorded with numerous artists such as BobbyMcFerrin, Crystal Gayle, Lightnin' Hopkins, John McCuen, Steve Lacy, CatieCurtis and Matt Flinner. He has published three books of poetry:_Wekwomteks_, _Being Time_ and _Where You Were_. Harold has been amusician/poet-in-residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts inCanada, guest soloist at the Frutillar Music Festival in Chile,composer/soloist with the Guangdong Modern Dance Company in Guang Zhou,China, invited poet for the Utah State Governor and commissionedcomposer/performer at New Music America. He has worked with the WindollsTheatre of Images in Colombia, Hong Kong, San Francisco and Seattle. Hehas been a member of a number of popular Utah-based bands such asThe Cowdaddies, The Jarman/Kingston Quartet, Amnesia and Wood. Hecurrently works with the Mark Chaney Trio, Red Rock Rondo, The EmilyMerrell Group and Good Grass. Geoffrey Miller has played withsuch Jazz luminaries as Steve Lacy, Mulgrew Miller, Bob Brookmeyer, BrianBromberg, and Gregory Hutchinson, among many others. Geoffreycurrently performs with groups such as the Daniel Day Trio, Greg Floor Quartet,Slajo, The John Flanders Trio, The Chisolm Bros., Utah Symphony, and the MormonTabernacle Choir. Also a composer, Professor Miller has written pieces for BigBand, Woodwind Trio, and Guitar Ensemble. He has also composed over fiftyJazz pieces. As an undergraduate at the University of Utah, GeoffreyMiller won the prestigious Lionel Hampton award for Outstanding JazzSoloist. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree ('96) from the Universityof Utah. After his graduation from the University, he was honored to jointhe faculty. In 2001, Geoffrey moved to Boston to study at the NewEngland Conservatory of Music, where he earned his Masters in JazzStudies. At the Conservatory, Geoff was mentored by great Jazz artistssuch as Steve Lacy, Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Bob Brookmeyer, CecilMcBee, and Alan Chase. Most featuredreadings are followed by an open reading.
