City Art Presents Mike Dorrell and Harold Carr with Flavia Cervino-Wood

            Writer Mike Dorrell and poet/musician Harold Carr and Violinist Flavia Cervino-Wood will read and perform their work on January 15th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. 

Mike Dorrell is originally from Swansea, Wales. He has is the author of over a dozen produced plays, including work for BBC Radio 4 such as PICTURES OF THE FLOATING WORLD, an examination of the artistic and personal legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright, BURNING THE ARC, an antidote to UNDER MILK WOOD and PENNY GAFFS AND ANGEL PLACES, a sound portrait of the midlife crisis of Charles Dickens. Plays for the stage includes his series of stories about his home town, TALKING WALES 1, 11, and 111 and IV for Utah Contemporary Theatre which is designed for performance in non traditional theatre spaces. In Britain, his plays include RISE OF THE OLD CLOUD for Paines Plough, SONS OF THUNDER for Theatre Powys and EAST OF MAIN ST. for Avon Touring Company. From 1999-2008 he was Dramaturg for Salt Lake Acting Company and in that capacity he developed new work by Julie Jensen, J.T. Rogers and others.
Since leaving SLAC, had written THE TOWERING DEAD, a play about Dylan Thomas, and three other new plays. In the last few years he has turned to writing literary mysteries and has completed THE HOUSE OF THE RAVEN’S WING, and THE SCRIMSHAW SKELETON, both currently doing the rounds. Mike’s poetry has been published in small magazines in the UK.
Mike was educated at the University of London, studied drama, film and television at the University of Bristol and holds an M.A. from the University of Utah. He has taught there and is currently teaching a course in playwriting at Westminster College.
 
 
 
Poet/bassist Harold Carr has performed and recorded with numerous
artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Crystal Gayle, Lightnin' Hopkins, John
McCuen, Steve Lacy, Catie Curtis and Matt Flinner.  He has published
three books of poetry: _Wekwomteks_, _Being Time_ and _Where You
Were_. Harold has been a musician/poet-in-residence at the Banff
Centre for the Arts in Canada, guest soloist at the Frutillar Music
Festival in Chile, composer/soloist with the Guangdong Modern Dance
Company in Guang Zhou, China, invited poet for the Utah State Governor
and commissioned composer/performer at New Music America. He has
worked with the Windolls Theatre of Images in Colombia, Hong Kong, San
Francisco and Seattle. He has been a member of a number of popular
Utah-based bands such as The Cowdaddies, The Jarman/Kingston Quartet,
Amnesia and Wood.  He currently works with the Mark Chaney Trio, Red
Rock Rondo, The Emily Merrell Group and Good Grass.
 
Violinist Flavia Cervino-Wood studied music at the Conservatory of
music in Santiago Chile.  In Brazil she played with Milton Nascimento
and Grupo Agua.  Her first work in the U.S.A was with the to Brockport
Symphony in New York.  She lived in San Francisco for 19 years,
playing with many latin artists such as Rebeca Mauleon and Michael
Spiro and latin bands such as Sol y Luna (featured in the Oliver Stone
movie “The New Age”).  Flavia performed with Cecil Taylor at the San
Francisco Jazz Festival and with Merce Cunningham Dance Company.  She
was also an active member of the San Francisco avant-guard scene.  In
Utah Flavia plays with Red Rock Rondo (who won two Emmys), the Emily
Merrell Group and the Salt Lake Symphony.
