In this finely wrought portrait of western American life, Ron Carlson takes us to the small town of Oakpine, Wyoming, and into the lives of four men trying to make peace with who they are in the world. In high school, these men were in a band. One of them, Jimmy, left Oakpine for New York City after the tragic death of his brother. A successful novelist, he has returned thirty years later, in 1999—because he is dying. Return to Oakpine is a generous, tender look at friendship, family, and the roads not taken, by a writer at the peak of his craft. Ron Carlson is the author of five story collections and four novels, including The Signal and Five Skies. His fiction has appeared in Harper’s, The New Yorker, Playboy, GQ, Best American Short Stories, and The O. Henry Prize Stories. He is the director of the writing program at the University of California at Irvine and lives in Huntington Beach, California. Joel Long

Craig Dworkin | Alkali and Chapter XXIV Join author Craig Dworkin for a special reading and signing of his two newest works, Alkali and Chapter XXIV.Alkali collects six works, including two desert pastorals describing the sonic and luminescent landscape surrounding the Great Salt Lake.A brief description of Chapter XXIV: In 1761, Laurence Sterne published The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy. Chapter XXV of the fourth volumn opens:No doubt, Sir, —there is a whole chapter wanting here—and a chasm of ten pages made in the book by it.A jump in pagination confirms Chapter XXIV is missing. Coinciding with the 300th anniversary of Sterne’s birth, here is the absent chapter—a single signature designed to fit neatly into the first edition ( R &J Dodsley, 1761). Craig Dworkin’s interpolated text uses all historically consistent English words in which the letters f and s can be interchanged and result in a legitimate word. Each sentence is based on grammatical constructions found elsewhere in Sterne’s novel.The type, ITC Founders Caslon, includes seven pre-existing ligatures and seven bespoke long-s ligatures created by the book designer. The project was letterpress printed from photopolymer plates on handmade paper including a custom Red Butte Press watermark. A typographically illustrated cover utilizes the placement of each dash that appears in the text and externalizes the 18th century typesetters’ practice of using any available foundry dashes. The varying dash length and humorous interplay of the letters f and s call attention to potentialities of punctuation, spelling, and meaning. Bethany Schultz and Jonathan Travelstead at City Art

Poets Bethany Schultz and Jonathan Travelstead will share their work at the Salt Lake City Public Library. This event is part of the City Art Series. Bethany Schultz Hurst is the author of Miss Lost Nation (Anhinga, 2014), which won the Robert Dana-Anhinga Prize for Poetry. Her work has been selected to appear in Best American Poetry 2015 and has appeared in journals such as Crab Orchard, Gettysburg Review, New Ohio Review, New Orleans Review, and River Styx. She lives in Pocatello, Idaho, where she teaches creative writing at Idaho State University. Winner of the 2013 Cobalt Poetry Prize for his poem “Trucker,” Jonathan Travelstead has compiled an astounding collection of adrenalized poetry. How We Bury Our Dead is a narrative work which follows a single speaker as he jumps from one intense situation to the next in order to avoid his mother’s struggle with cancer. An Air Force firefighter, he volunteers to accompany his unit to Kuwait, and, after returning and still unable to cope, he hitchhikes his way across Alaska before finally going home. Travelstead served in the Air Force National Guard for six years as a firefighter and currently works as a fulltime firefighter for the city of Murphysboro. Having finished his MFA at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, he now works on an old dirt-bike he hopes will one day get him to Peru. This event isfree and open to the public. Kirsten Jorgenson is from Salt Lake City, UT via Chicago, IL. Sheis the author of two chapbooks, Deseretand Accidents of Distance, andco-author of the poetics chapbook, Country Music. Her work can be found in oris forthcoming from The AndNow Awards, Blazevox, Denver Quarterly, Diagram,Drunken Boat, Dusie, Horse Less Review, Keyhole, Sidebrow and We Are So HappyTo Know Something. She has an MA in British and American Literature from theUniversity of Utah and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University ofAlabama. Along with Nathan Hauke, she is co-editor of Ark Press and co-curatorof the Ark Press Summer Reading Series. Nathan Hauke was born and raised inrural Michigan. His first book, In theMarble of Your Animal Eyes, was published by Publication Studio. He is alsothe author of chapbooks: Honeybabe, Don’t Leave Me Now, S E W N, and In theLiving Room. His poetry has most recently been published in American Letters& Commentary, Dusie, Peaches and Bats, Real Poetik, Spittoon, Typo, and WeAre So Happy To Know Something. Two of his poems, “Deerfield (1)” and “ASurface. A Shore or Semi-transparency of Glass,” were selected to be a part ofThe Arcadia Project Anthology edited by GC Waldrep and Joshua Corey. Rob Carney is originally from Washington State. He is a two-time winner of theUtah Book Award for Poetry and the author of three previous books and threechapbooks of poems, including Story Problems and Weather Report. His work hasappeared in many journals as well as the Norton anthology, Flash FictionForward. In 2014, he received the Robinson Jeffers Tor House Prize for Poetry.He is a professor of English at Utah Valley University and lives in Salt LakeCity.
