Poets Nance Van Winckel and David Hawkins will read from their works on Wednesday, April 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Public Library as par of the City Art Reading Series. This event is free and open to the public. Nance Van Winckel’s Pacific Walkers, her sixth book of poems, was recently released from U. of Washington Press. A fourth collection of linked short stories, Boneland, came out with U. of Oklahoma Press in October 2013. Nance’s other books of poetry include: No Starling (University of Washington Press, 2007), Bad Girl, with Hawk (U. of Illinois Press, 1987), The Dirt (Miami U. Press, 1994), Beside Ourselves (Miami University Press, 2003), and After A Spell (Miami U. Press, 1998), which received the Washington State Governor’s Award for Poetry. She's received two National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Fellowships, a Pushcart Prize, Poetry Magazine’s Friends of Literature Award, two Washington State Artist Trust Awards, The Midland Authors Award, and awards from the Poetry Society of America. Her poems have appeared in Poetry, The American Poetry Review, the Pushcart Prize Anthology, The Gettysburg Review, Field, Volt, The Kenyon Review, The Massachusetts Review, and Ploughshares. Nance's three books of short stories include Curtain Creek Farm (Persea Books, 2000), Quake (U. of Missouri Press, 1998) which received the 1998 Paterson Fiction Prize, and Limited Lifetime Warranty (U. of Missouri Press, 1994). New stories appear in The Georgia Review, Colorado Review, and AGNI. Nance received a Christopher Isherwood Fiction Fellowship for the forthcoming book Boneland. Van Winckel teaches in the low-residency MFA in Writing Program at Vermont College of Fine Arts. She has also taught at Lake Forest College in Illinois (1979-90) and is Professor Emerita in the MFA in Writing program at Eastern Washington University, where she served as editor of the literary journal Willow Springs from 1990-96. David Hawkins’ poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Barrow Street, Chelsea, Poems & Plays, and The Southeast Review. His first book, Dark Adaptations, was selected by Allen Grossman as the first runner-up in the 2008 Bellday Books poetry prize and is the recipient of the ’08 Utah Arts Council prize for a collection of poems. He currently teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in the University of Utah’s Writing Program. Lance Olsen and Melanie Rae Thon will be reading together March 20th, 7:00 p.m. at The King's English (1511 South 1500 East). Lance has published two books in 2014: the novel Theories of Forgetting, and the critifictional meditation [[ there. ]]. His new collection of stories How to Unfeel the Dead will appear later this spring. Melanie will be reading from a new project. Poets Klaus Martens and Natasha Saje will read from their work on March 19th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Klaus Martens (*1944) is a poet, translator and literary scholar, living in Saarbrücken, Germany and Urshult, Sweden. He is a member of P.E.N. Germany and the German Writers’ Association (VS) and has published eleven books of poetry. Translations of his work were published in Japan and the U.S. He is the German translator of works by, among many others, Wallace Stevens, Dylan Thomas and Derek Walcott. Natasha Sajé’s first book of poems, Red Under the Skin (Pittsburgh, 1994), was chosen from over 900 manuscripts to win the Agnes Lynch Starrett prize, and was later awarded the Towson State Prize in Literature. Her second collection of poems, Bend, was published by Tupelo Press in 2004 and awarded the Utah Book Award in Poetry. Her third book of poems, Vivarium, is forthcoming from Tupelo Press in March 2014. Her critical book about poetry, Windows and Doors: A Poet Reads Literary Theory, will be published by the University of Michigan press, also in 2014. Sajé was born in Munich, Germany, in 1955 and grew up in New York City and Northern New Jersey. She earned a B.A. from the University of Virginia, an M.A. from Johns Hopkins, and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland at College Park, for a study titled, "'Artful Artlessness': Reading the Coquette in the Novel, 1724-1913." Her honors include the Bannister Writer-in-Residence at Sweet Briar College, the Robert Winner and the Alice Fay di Castagnola Awards from the Poetry Society of America, the 2002 Campbell Corner Poetry Prize, a Fulbright Scholarship to Slovenia, a Camargo Fellowship in France, and grants from the states of Maryland and Utah. Sajé was a Maryland poet-in-the-schools 1989-1998. Her poems, reviews, and essays appear in many periodicals, including The New York Times, The Henry James Review; Kenyon Review; New Republic; Paris Review; Parnassus; Chelsea; Gettysburg Review; Legacy: Journal of American Women Writers; Ploughshares; Pool; andThe Writer’s Chronicle. Playwright Matthew Ivan Bennett will present the play Different=Amazing on March 12th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Matthew Ivan Bennett is a resident playwright of Plan-B Theatre Company, with whom he's premiered several plays, including Eric(a), which won Best Drama at the United Solo Theatre Festival (New York), and Mesa Verde, which was nominated for a Steinberg award. His radio plays have been broadcast nationally through KUER, and his adaptation of Frankenstein received Best Feature Program from the Utah Broadcasters Association. His short works have been at Salt Lake's Wasatch Theatre, in Chicago's Circle Theatre, Hunger Artists Theatre Ensemble in Fullerton (LA), at Rising Sun Performance Company in New York, at Monkeyman Productions in Toronto, and at the Source Festival in DC. He’s written an anti-bullying play for children, Different=Amazing, which toured to Utah schools, and has had poetry published in Western Humanities Review and Sugar House Review. Matt earned a Bachelors' of Theatre Arts at Southern Utah University and is a member of the Dramatists’ Guild. DIFFERENT=AMAZING is a new, 40-minute play drawn from real-life bullying experiences of elementary students, including current Salt Lake and Davis County students. The goal is to provide students with the tools to identify, address and hopefully prevent bullying in their own schools. Inspired by the 2010 event of the same name. Featuring Tyson Baker and Latoya Rhodes. Directed by Jerry Rapier. Special thanks to Jim Martin and Denice Maedgen. Most featured readings are followed by an open reading. Writers RJ Walker and Willy Palomo will read and perform from their work on March 5th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. RJ Walker is a performance poet from Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a member of the 2013 Salt City Slam team which made group piece finals at the 2013 NPS. He is also the representative for Riverton, Utah at the 2013 Individual World Poetry Slam. He is the most recent host of The Greenhouse Effect open mic and has been doing spoken word and comedy for 3 years, and slam poetry for 2. He works as an EMT and lives a quiet life in Salt lake City with his 6 (or was it 5?) Invisible cats. They are all named George Foreman and RJ does not believe they exist. Willy Palomo is an emerging writer and student at Westminster College. His poetry and prose has been published in the University of New Mexico's Scribendi and ellipsis... literature and art. He founded both the Voice Boxers Poetry Slam and Westminster Slam Poetry to promote and nourish the local poetry community. Both slams have since sent poetry teams out to compete nationally. Willy Palomo also coaches high school students through Poetry Out Loud and teaches a literature course once a week with Dr. Desilets at East High School. Most featured readings are followed by an open reading.
