Writer Barbara
Duffey will read from her work and musicians Harold Carr and Geoff Miller
will play original jazz at the Salt Lake Public Library Main Branch at 7:00
P.M. on Wednesday, January 20th as
part of the City Art Reading Series.
Barbara Duffey is a Ph.D. student in Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Utah. Her poems have appeared in
such publications as Indiana
Review, American Letters &
Commentary, Best New Poets 2009,
and Prairie
Schooner. A summa cum
laude graduate of the University of Southern
California, she has worked as a telephone operator,
an SAT math tutor, a paralegal, a volunteer on an
archeological dig, a reading instructor for preschoolers to adults, and an
instructor for Writers in the Schools. She coordinates the Agha Shahid
Ali Prize at the University of Utah Press and
lives in Salt Lake City with her husband, one
dog, and two cats.
Harold Carr (acoustic and electric bass) has performed and
recorded with numerous artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Crystal Gayle, Lightnin'
Hopkins, John McCuen, Steve Lacy, Catie Curtis and Matt Flinner. He has
published three books of poetry: Wekwomteks, Being Time and Where
You Were. Harold has been a musician/poet-in-residence at the Banff Centre
for the Arts in Canada, guest soloist at the Frutillar Music Festival in Chile,
composer/soloist with the Guangdong Modern Dance Company in Guang Zhou, China,
invited poet for the Utah State Governor and commissioned composer/performer at
New Music America. He has worked with the Windolls Theatre of Images in
Colombia, Hong Kong, San Francisco and Seattle. He has been a member of a
number of popular Utah-based bands such as The Cowdaddies, The Jarman/Kingston
Quartet, Amnesia and Wood. He currently works with blue
haiku, Red Rock Rondo, and the John
Flanders trio.
As
a performer, Geoff is grateful for the opportunities he has had to play with
such Jazz luminaries as Steve Lacy, Mulgrew Miller, Bob Brookmeyer, Brian
Bromberg, and Gregory Hutchinson, among many others.
Geoffrey
currently performs with groups such as the Daniel Day Trio, Greg Floor Quartet,
Slajo, The John Flanders Trio, The Chisolm Bros., Utah Symphony, and the Mormon
Tabernacle Choir.
Also
a composer, Professor Miller has written pieces for Big Band, Woodwind Trio,
and Guitar Ensemble. He has also composed over fifty Jazz pieces.
As
an undergraduate at the University of Utah, Geoffrey Miller won the prestigious
Lionel Hampton award for Outstanding Jazz Soloist. He earned his Bachelor
of Music degree ('96) from the University of Utah. After his graduation
from the University, he was honored to join the faculty. In 2001,
Geoffrey moved to Boston to study at the New England Conservatory of Music,
where he earned his Masters in Jazz Studies. At the Conservatory, Geoff
was mentored by great Jazz artists such as Steve Lacy, Jerry Bergonzi, George
Garzone, Bob Brookmeyer, Cecil McBee, and Alan Chase.
The event is free and open to the public. City Art is sponsored by the Utah Arts
Council, the Salt Lake City Arts Council, Zoo, Arts, and Parks, X-mission, and
audience donations. The featured
reading will be followed by an open reading.
