Yale Prize winner Jody Gladding will read from her poems along with Salt Lake City writer Holly Simonsen at the Salt Lake City Public Library Main Branch at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, September 16th. A widely published poet and translator, Jody Gladding’s first book of poetry, Stone Crop, won the Yale Series of Younger Poets in 1993. The recipient of a Whiting Award in 1997, her poems have appeared in The Paris Review, Poetry, Ploughshares, Agni, and elsewhere. Her translations from the French include such volumes as Evil and Exile by Elie Wiesel (Notre Dame, 2000) with John Rothschild; The Devil’s Cloth: A History of Stripes by Michel Pastoureau (Washington Square, 2003); and The Serpent of Stars by Jean Giono (Archipelago, 2004). She lives in Vermont. Holly Simonsenearned her B.A. from Westminster College in Salt Lake City and is currently working on her M.F.A. in poetry writing at Vermont College of Fine Arts. She works primarily off the page making ecopoetic installations in collaboration with the Great Salt Lake. Her published poetry can be found in Ecotone, Copper Nickel, Red Rock Review, and is forthcoming from NANOFiction. The event is free and open to the public. Craig Arnold Tribute Reminder

City Art will present a tribute to poet Craig Arnold on September 9th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. The tribute will include readings from Jennifer Tonge, Rebecca Lindenberg, Joel Long, Paisley Rekdal, Brian Kubarycz, and Jacqueline Osherow. After pursuing his passion for volcanoes by visiting sites around the world, Craig Arnold was lost on April 26th on the Japanese Island Kuchino-erabu following the path of the poet Basho. Arnold was a vital part of Utah’s arts community. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Utah and continued to live and work in the area since his graduation, giving readings of his work including a standing-room-only reading last February for City Art. He was also a wonderful singer/songwriter, heading up the band Iris in its various incarnations. Former U.S. Poet Laureate, Robert Pinsky called Arnold “One of the most gifted poets of his generation.” Arnold’s poems have appeared in “Best American Poetry” in 1998, 2004 and 2006, as well as in the journals “Poetry,” “The New Republic,” “Paris Review,” “Yale Review” and “Poetry Northwest.” He has received the Rome Prize, a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, the Hodder Fellowship from Princeton and the Amy Lowell Poetry Traveling Scholarship. Arnold was the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to Colombia and a U.S.-Japan Creative Artists Exchange Fellowship. He taught at the University of Wyoming. The event is free and open to the public. Meltdown Reminder: Come melt with us.

City Art will present its annual meltdown on Wednesday, September 2nd at 7:00 P.M. at the Salt Lake Public Library Main Branch. This year’s event will again feature some of Utah’s favorite writers as voted for by the audience of City Art including the following:, Jeff Metcalf Jacqueline Osherow Francois Camoin, Kimberly Johnson, Paisley Rekdal, Michael McLane, Melissa Bond, Lance Olsen, Heidi Hart, Rachel Marston, Andy Hoffman, Halina Duraj, Melanie Rae Thon, Sandy Anderson, Joel Long, and Stephen Tuttle.
