Backstage Library Works will soon be NACO independent! With this independence and in order to provide improved services to our clients and others in the library community, we’re investigating new ways that we can better serve you.

NAR creation in conjunction with our Cataloging services

· Like any one of your catalogers, when performing copy or original cataloging, we would create or edit NARs as needed to ensure that all headings have corresponding and up-to-date NARs. We could deliver the new authority records with the bibliographic records we catalog, or you could wait to receive them with your next authority file update.

NAR creation in general

· If you have a backlog of authority records to create, or want to contribute your local authorities to NACO and aren’t part of a funnel project or otherwise a member, Backstage could work from surrogates, ebooks, existing lists, etc., to create or contribute for you.

· If creating from surrogates, we could add a particular note indicating such was the case. If a NACO library yourselves, you could review the item-in-hand and then delete such a note, or leave it as is.

Because we will be doing some contribution ourselves in order to maintain our independence, for any service offering we would be open to creating NARs under a NACO library’s authorization or to use our own as desired. This would be similar to our cataloging workflow where we often catalog using a library’s OCLC authorization.

Depending on budgets, we would customize the amount of work/information going into NARs to be as little as just the CORE elements to a fully fleshed out record.

Our current limitations: we are not able to do non-Roman languages at this time, but we can handle the majority of Romanized languages. We are also not yet trained to do series titles.

As these ideas, or other service options, are in the early investigation phases, we would appreciate any insight, thoughts, other ideas or suggestions that you may have that could turn these into something that would be really helpful. Please feel free to respond to me off-list.
