Backstage - Phase 3a update

We received an additional 89k updates this week from LC for Phase 3a NAF cleanup. That brings the total to around 130k so far. LC originally had plans to wrap this up before Christmas (or by this Friday, 12/19). However, there are still roughly 220k updates left to do. So it is looking doubtful that Phase 3a will be complete before the end of this year. LC has said they will pick back up with the Phase 3a cleanup very early next year in the event that they cannot finish in 2014. Backstage - Master Local Authority File

http://ac.bslw.com/community/wiki/index.php5/Step_3.13 Local Authority Masters At Backstage, we have an option to match against a Library's local authority file, either first or last in the process. If we match first, then the version of the heading that the Library has maintained on their side is preferred and taken over whatever match may (or may not) exist in the national authority file. If we match last, then the heading does not show up on our unmatched headings report. In either case, we also do not return the local authority match because it is presumed that our Library already has a copy of that in their own system. We have around 20 or so clients that have us maintain their local authority master records. These clients, together, have a combined total of 3.0 million+ local authorities. Master Local Authority File? So we had the thought of what if it made sense for our other libraries to match against these local authorities? Maybe there wouldn't be a high match-rate anyway against the combined locals due to their (most likely) regional coverage, but perhaps it is still worth exploring? With more than 3.0m extra authorities to match against, would it make sense to try this kind of service? Next Steps For now, this is all theoretical for us at Backstage. We wanted to broach the topic to our clients via the listserv and gather any feedback. If this did sound like a good idea to explore, then we would also need to approach those clients that currently have local authorities with us and ask their permission to include those authorities into a Master Local Authority File. We have ideas in place about how to maintain that database, but we can talk more about those ideas if this garners any kind of positive response. As always, we welcome whatever feedback you may have about this potential service. Backstage - Phase 3a NAF cleanup has started

Phase 3a cleanup of the NAF has indeed begun this week. We received around 41,000 updates from LC which should start making their way to our clients depending on when you receive your Notification updates. As a comparison, we typically have between 4,000 to 6,000 updates from LC each week. Since the aim of Phase 3a is to churn through 350,000 updates over this time period, we anticipate next week's set of updates will likely be in the neighborhood of 150,000 or more. Naturally, not all of these updates will necessarily be passed your way as it depends on the volume of authorities you have in your database as well as the coverage represented by your access points. Still, please be prepared for a much larger than normal set of authorities to load. Backstage - Phase 3a update

Just a quick note to let everyone know that the tentatively planned Phase 3a cleanup that would begin December 1st has not happened yet. Our own Karen Anderson is telling us that the task force is starting work on adding ISNI to name authority records, which is the main focus for Phase 3b. Due to this, Phase 3a's planned updates have been postponed slightly. We expect the updates to commence in time for LC's next weekly update (week of 12/8). RDA, uniform titles, THIS 1XX FIELD CANNOT BE USED

After reloading all bibs and authorities for the RDA upgrade, we have a number of authorities with the 667 THIS 1XX FIELD CANNOT BE USED UNDER RDA UNTIL THIS RECORD HAS BEEN REVIEWED AND/OR UPDATED. The list I have comes from an III blind headings report and is all uniform titles. I imagine there are other types of authorities with the same message.
