This year started with a loss—not just to Bindlestiff, but to the variety arts community and beyond. The Zipper Factory Theater, which was a stronghold of the variety arts in NYC, unexpectedly shut its doors on January 14, just days before the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus Winter Cabaret was scheduled to open there. The cost of losing this venue goes far beyond our own promotional and travel expenditures. One of the few variety-friendly venues in NYC whose dimensions allowed for the full expression of circus artistry—aerial performance, target bullwhip, skilled juggling, stilt walking—has been shuttered. This venue was also one of the few spaces in which self-producing groups could afford to work. With its closure a dozen performing arts groups and scheduled shows suddenly became homeless, including our beloved Winter Cabaret, now an institution in its 14th year. Nearly two months later, we have finally found a new home for the Cabaret: Dixon Place will house the Cabaret in March, April and May, and will also host this season's Cavalcade of Youth. But recent events are a powerful reminder of how vulnerable the arts are in times of economic turmoil. It seems clearer than ever that we need to stick together in order to survive and thrive. In hard times, we draw closer, cultivate our connections and strengthen our bonds. If you feel a connection to Bindlestiff—if our unconventional vision and values speak to you, if you consider yourself a Bindlestiff at heart, or if you just love coming to our shows—we invite you to deepen that connection this year by making a tax-deductible financial contribution. We need your help to continue creating provocative, thrilling performances, conducting youth programs that develop skills and self-esteem, and cultivating a vital community of variety artists, all while keeping ticket prices accessibly low. Your donation, whether large or small, will support our programs and help us recover from this recent setback. It is also a reminder that you believe in the work we do. In the meantime, we remain committed to our mission, and we look forward to seeing you at the Cabaret. Tax-deductible donations can be made at http://www.bindlestiff.org/menu/donate.html or by sending a check or money order to Bindlestiff Family Variety Arts, Inc., PO Box 1917, New York, NY 10009. Bindlestiff Family Variety Arts, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization devoted to the preservation and evolution of the variety arts. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Bindlestiff Family Cirkus PO Box 1917 New York, NY 10009 1-877-BINDLES www.bindlestiff.org Bindlestiff Family Cirkus PO Box 1917 New York, NY 10009 1-877-BINDLES HTTP://WWW.BINDLESTIFF.ORG -- Mark Meyers London, UK AIM: meyersmrmark Mobile: 07532 146 463
