One of the only real circus bands in this country is running away to join the world. Sunday, December 10 "Cirkestra" is taking the stage at Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn, NY and Tuesday December 12 at Middle East in Cambridge, MA... The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus will be coming along to mix it up with a little sword swallowing and whip cracking, but this appearance is really about the band.
Cirkestra formed in 2004 led by veteran circus performer Peter Bufano who started as a clown in Ringling Brothers 20 years ago and is now a keyboardist on that show. They honed their sound sharing the stage with clowns, acrobats, aerialists, sword swallowers, dancing dogs and the ringmaster.
The four core members are all seasoned circus performers from the ranks of fine circuses. Käthe Louise Hostetter (Bindlestiff Cirkus) on her home-made five-string fiddle is the perfect compliment to Bufano's (Ringling) accordion stylings. Sammy Lett (Circus Smirkus) dazzles children of all ages switching from saxophone to flute to clarinet. He even fits in a harmonica and digeridoo. The band seems to be glued together by the syncopations of Dobson (Big Apple Circus) who is a band himself, within the band.
They have recruited members of "The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus" to join them on stage. The Bindlestiffs last shared the stage with Cirkestra earlier this year. Their winter cabaret mixed circus, vaudeville, burlesque, and one of the best sword swallowers alive today: Mr. Pennygaff. The evening will also include musical acts Alec K. Redfearn and The Eyesores, and Brooklyn's own Sweet Soubrette.
